Vanderbilt Nurse Residency winter 2011 cohort

Published

Figured I'd start a thread for those of us applying to the Vandy nurse residency program for 2011 to share thoughts, feelings, questions and to network with eachother a bit.

I'm Duluth! I'm a new grad with a previous degree in Biology. I'm applying for the Adult Critical Care track, with hopes of matching to Trauma or Emergency Services.

Thanks to both of you for your thoughts -- and to you, Newnurse3 for the Johns Hopkins guide. It's great!

I have every intention of being honest, being myself, and being straightforward with my passions and my interests within the profession! I guess I am just psyching myself out!

Good luck, again, to everyone!

Thanks everyone for the advice!! Good luck to everyone who has interviews this week! Let us know how it goes!!

Hi! Has anyone had their interview yet? How did it go? Any recommendations for where to stay in Nashville?

Specializes in ICU, ED, PACU.

After a 16 hour drive back, I'm home. What a great visit. Vandy was everything I thought it would be and more. I had a blast in Nashville. Just hope I get to come back as a nurse resident!

Hey Duluth- any recommendations of where to stay while in town? Glad you had a good trip! Hope to hear good news soon!

Specializes in ICU, ED, PACU.

I would try to get any of the hotels near the Vanderbilt campus. They all seemed nice, but spendy. I stayed at the Millennium and it was adequate but far away. Make sure to spend time taking the tour and exploring the city. Nashville is great!

Glad to hear it went well! Best of luck to you! I have my interview on Wednesday, so I am really hoping it goes well. I think I am actually going to stay with some friends in the area, but I can't wait to tour Vanderbilt and Nashville!!

Hi everyone, will anyone be in the area the first week of November? I am planning on staying November 1-3. Any updates on interviews?!?

Hey everyone! I just got back late last night from my interview yesterday. Nashville is such a nice town and Vanderbilt was awesome! The interview was very intense but everyone was really really nice and friendly. Now I will just be praying until I hear the news in mid November! Good luck to everyone!!

Hi everyone! I applied from the Adult Critical Care track and I'll be coming from NYC for my interview next Friday.

Hi all! Does anyone have any further advice after interviewing? Were the previous questions that were posted helpful? Did you feel prepared going into the interview? Did they mention how many people were being accepted vs. applied?

good luck!! The waiting game is the hardest but so worth it! :)

Hey guys! Had my interview last week. Just wanted to give you a heads up. The questions have changed this year (at least for ICU track).

1) Strengths/Weaknesses

2) Why did you want to become a nurse?

3) Tell me about a time you made an error and how did you fix it. If not, how would you fix it.

4) Tell me about a time when you received difficult (or less than positive) feedback from your supervisor or clinical instructor. How did you respond to the feedback? What changes did you implement as a result?

5) What is your definition of leadership, and why do you feel it is important? How have you demonstrated leadership in clinicals?

6) Describe how you demonstrate professionalism in your clinicals. What behaviors and characteristics contribute to that image?

7) Describe a situation where you persuaded an individual or group to follow your course of action rather than their previously stated position.

8) What was the hardest clinical assignment you have had, and what did you do to get through it?

Hope this helps! I was very unprepared for the interview because I had prepared answers to the questions posted previously. I think the ICU track must be different that the rest of the tracks.
