Valencia CC Graduates or Current students?

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi! I will be starting VCC in August 2006 Nursing Program. I turned in my application in July 2005 for the program and got accepted for the August 2006 Program :yelclap:

So I took some classes in Fall 2005 towards an AA degree so that in the future I can have all my prereques done to get my BSN. I didn't totally waste this year-long wait. I want to start with the ADN and start working before going back for my bachelors. I am happy with the school I chose. I have weighed every option here in Central Florida and felt it was worth it to wait a year to get into the program. After reading some of these posts, I am still confident I am at the right place.

Anyway, I feel like I am a little in the dark from the school. They are waiting till the last minute it seems like! What can I expect? How soon before school starts will we have orientation and what exactly do they cover in the orientation. I've read some schools have anywhere from 1 hour to 3 day orientations. Just wondering what to expect at Valencia?

What about uniforms? Do you have to buy them from a traveling truck that are horrible quality like I read so much about? When do clinicals start and are they built into the class schedule that I'm seeing online or should I expect clinicals to be over and above those hours?

I am also currently working full time and planning to cut down to part time once I start the program. It would be great if I had this information so I could plan ahead since August is only 3 months away!

Any help would be appreciated and if there are any nursing students currently attending VCC that want to email or PM me so I don't have to bother the advisors, I would really appreciate it! :typing

Thanks! Julie

I think Valencia students are few and far between. I was accepted into the January 2007 class.

I have the same thoughts that you are having. When I read some of the posts on here, they scare the bejesus out of me.

As far as orientation goes, I have no clue about that. But I do know that I have contacted them regarding a few things and really did not get an answer that would help. There is not alot of information for the new students coming in. I am sure if you e-mail them, they would give you something to ease your mind. I will pm you a site to visit. Oh...almost forgot. They place you in your first semester class. They pick which one you will be in, at least that is what I heard. So one less thing to worry about!!!!!

I think not knowing what to expect is worse than waiting for the letter. I like planning ahead, I hate surprises. I am even thinking about getting some of the books, just to start skimming through, so I am not cramming everything in at one time.

Well good luck

Hello, I graduated from VCC back in 2002, but I'm sure things haven't drastically changed since then. You should get a mail notification of the date and time of orientation, which if I remember correctly was a couple of hours. All of your above questions about uniforms, clinicals, class time will be answered in orientation. You will not be having clinicals your first semester of nursing school, but, you will need to purchase your uniform during the first semester. They will give you the type of uniform you must have, which can be purchased from Uniform City right in Orlando, where most nurses buy thier scrubs. Also during orientation you'll find out what books and lab supplies will need to be purchased for the program. I remember buying a duffle bag of lab skills supplies which lasted throughout the entire program.

There's a lot of things that you are not going to be able to find out until going to orientation. It's out of your control...so just relax...and they will give you plenty of time get familiar with everything you will need to know. Also anothter thing to remember is that you're in nursing school now....it's a little different than just being a college student. They make their own schedules which sometimes start on the first day of classes or whenever they plan it too!

Hope all goes well with your first semester of nursing....it will be an adjustment! If you need anything feel free to p.m. me!

Congrats on getting into Valencia...i have 3 more pre reqs to do b4 I apply to the program (applying for summer/fall of 2007)...but i do hope i don't have to wait a year:o ... what was your gpa at application? if ya don't mind me asking... anyways all the best...i'm sure u will be ok ya never know i may see u on your clinicals ...i work at Fl hosp. and i see many VCC sudents...

good luck

hello, i'm starting at valencia jan 07 excited but nervous at the same time i just finshed up high school so wish me luck and maybe we'll see eachother around

I'm starting valencia in the spring and i'm excited congrats to you getting in the program did you do anything else that helped you get in like vol or extra classes any advice will help thank you

I was accepted into Spring 2006 nursing session. I guess all of your questions have been answered by now, so maybe you can help me. Im a little lost just as you were before beggining. When will orientation be held and what are the days and hours of nursing school? One more question, how possible is it to work while in nursing school? If you could answer any of these questions I would really appreciate it. Thanks and good luck in nursing school! :wink2:

Any other Valencia students around? Im starting the LPN to RN bridge (online) program in January? Anyone else in the program? Im looking forward to it, but dreading it at the same time. Its a bitter-sweet type of thing for me...cant wait to become an RN but not looking forward to another year on the grind! I wont be able to work as much as I anticipated so Im still doing some financial planning too....

Currently I am in the 4th semester of the VCC Nursing Program.. Usually

NUR I is mon-thur. Not quite sure of the hours because they vary slightly. NUR II -IV for me has been class on Thur and Fri. with a clinical day depending what you choose for a hospital site. Be flexible through out the program because changes are made with staff, hospitals etc..... Good luck...

I will be starting in May.:yeah: I went to orientation recently and it was 8am to 3pm. Most all of our questions were answered there. There are two groups for classes, either M-Th 8am - 3pm or M-Th 10am - 5pm. They said to plan to be in the lab practicing on Friday and Sunday. We were able to try on and purchase our uniforms right at orientaion. There were books available for viewing but not for purchase. They recommended not working during NS, but I would love to hear what any current VCC students have to say about that.:D

Hey and congrats!!

I start in fall 08 and i am so ready!! Did you buy uniforms? if so how much did they cost? Also you do get to choose the class times? or do they assign them to you? I also heard that working and school is not advised but I have to work and I work with nurses who went to school and worked they said "hard but doable"...good luck

thx and all the best

The following are the costs I incurred at orientation

Lab Coat - can use your own if it is a long one. $22.00

White scrub pants and top- have to buy theirs. $65.00

Blue Polo with Valencia Logo to wear to class-required $25.00

White cardigan-only thing you can wear @ clinicals if you get cold $35.00

Joined Valencia Nurses Association for one year $40.00

They place into one time slot or the other. If you prefer the other, like I did, you have to email the class asking if anyone wants to switch and if someone agrees to switch then you can. Good Luck:up:
