VA HPSP 2020 - Scholarship Award Updates?

Hey guys,

Just curious if anyone else here applied for the Veterans Affairs Health Professional Scholarship Program this year for PMHNP. I've been seeing lots of posts on other forums for different specialities (pharm, med, PA, BSN) but nothing from psych NP applicants. If anyone has heard back or is nervously awaiting as well, I'd love to connect. I'm feeling really hopeful about the opportunity and the silence is killing me! ?

I was also an alternate for the BSN scholarship, and was just notified of my "tentative selection" (whatever that means). CONGRATS to everyone receiving notices! I'm sure there will be a ton of questions to ask on the Town Hall next week.

That means they are offering you the scholarship. You should have received a few other emails. CONGRATS!

I am currently on this scholarship since last year, if you have any questions let me know ? Best of luck

Hello,  just following up to see if you have received any new information regarding the HPSP scholarship? Have they sent you information to choose your top 5 choices yet? I have not heard anything as of yet. I graduate in May of 21.

I don’t graduate until May 2022 so I definitely haven’t heard.  Although, I did get approved for clinical rotations at the local VA (which is where I hope to ultimately land).

Have you been in contact with your top choice VAs?  I would assume you would know by January.  Congratulations, by the way, on almost being finished!

Congratulations on your clinical rotation. I have not heard anything yet about my 5 choices. But hopefully soon. I will keep you updated!

I'm also very interested in hearing how this process works! When you were provided a list of residency locations to rank, did it include all the VA sites that are currently offering a PMHNP residency program? Or does it seem like only some of the programs consider/accept HPSP recipients? Since applications are generally received and considered for selection by the programs individually, I'm confused how/when HPSP applicants come into that process. Like perhaps when a program isn't sure if it will fill its residency positions? Though with so few spots per site, I'm surprised that would ever be an issue.. so, definitely eager to better understand the details and what to expect moving forward. Thanks so much for the willingness to share your experiences! ?

I applied to the VA's website. Although, I did notice that each city that has the program has its own website with information on applying there for that specific site. I have not yet received my wish lists so I can't tell you how it goes just yet.  I believe that they have an agreement with these universities and provide a certain amount of slots for the VA (possibly). I don't think that they would ever have a problem filling the residency programs at these Universities. They all are great colleges! I am honored to have this opportunity to and train with any school on the list.  The link provided shows each location that now offers the HPSP program. Some have websites that are already up and running with valuable information.  I will share all the information I can in hopes to help the next nurse.

@stormp757 just curious if you've received a rank list and/or additional information about your residency placement yet? I'm interested in a particular program that allows residents to simultaneously pursue a DNP at the affiliated university, but unsure whether that will be an option for placement or how that selection process will work. I'm not anticipating that it's likely to work out - but I guess that I'm still hopeful, nevertheless ?  So, I'm looking forward to learning more, as that information becomes available. And any updates you feel comfortable sharing are very helpful & appreciated! Thanks again for your insight thus far, and best of luck as you navigate the process yourself in the coming months.

You might have already received this information, but I heard that the rank lists for 2021 graduates will be sent out this upcoming week! ?

Thank you for the information! I did not hear that. I sent a message after you reached out to me following up on when they might be sending the list out and it simply stated between January and February.  This is wonderful news! I have been checking my email everyday praying for a list. The email said it was limited slots available but there was more for Spring then for Winter! And we did not need to reapply to the university we chose. It would be nice to be able to have a plan!

I can imagine the anticipation - it's a big unknown that's approaching quickly! I'm a year out and already feeling some suspense LOL. In the email I recently received, it was also mentioned that if there's a particular site on the list you want to be at, there's a good chance of being able to match you there. So I think they're taking preferences into account as much as possible, which is nice to know. And it sounded like there is suppose to be a pretty quick turnaround with notification of final placement after ranking submission. They do all seem like great programs, but I hope you're able to find out soon & start making plans!
