VA Hiring Process

Published

From the previous posts I've read the VA hiring process is pretty long and drawn out. I've applied to two different VA sites. The VA an hour away from my home I can always get in contact with a nurse recruiter and my application status for two posting says "referred to selecting official." The VA closest to my home, I can't get through to the recruiter, she emailed me back once and the status of all the apps just says "application received." I do know a nurse practitioner that works at this VA site and she tried to give my resume to the recruiter, but I had to apply online.

For those of you that are familiar with the hiring process, any idea what the next step is. In all there are around 20 RN vacancies. The two systems have two completely different online application submissions, how will I know if I've completed the application process correctly, its a little confusing :(

I've been applying since I've graduated and earlier this year I found out that I was applying the wrong way so those positions don't count. These positions closed in September.

Thanks in advance ?

They don't call references unless you are one of a few or the only one being considered. Good luck. My online application status never changed on the job I got and the job I didn't get. Don't bother looking at that.

I have a tentative offer. Now I need to churn out the 9 dimensions paper for the salary board.

Google VA PBI interview questions.

I agree with this, but also wanted to add that you should make sure that you look at sample questions/level specific to the kind of job you're applying for.

Sample PBI Questions - Performance Based Interviewing (PBI)

Those of you who applied and successfully got the job, did you include a cover letter? I have never written one.

I've done it and haven't done it. The first time I got a VA job, no cover letter. Every time after that I've done a cover letter. I've interviewed for 2 jobs since working in the system that I did not get. Both times I was not qualified for them. The other jobs I've applied to (3 other jobs) with a cover letter, I've gotten. So I don't think it will make or break your chances but it may open the door for you.

fingers crossed. just submitted.

I didn't include a cover letter, but my resume has a "profile" section at the top that I customize based on the job I'm applying for. Personally, I almost never look at cover letters when I'm reviewing resumes. A particularly eye catching cover letter might entice me to read it, but I don't give it a second thought when a resume comes without one.

I wrote one anyway, I figured it can't hurt and gives me a chance to be more personable. Can anyone tell me about how long it took from the time you submitted on USAJOBS to the time you received your first contact to get the process started? One job I applied for has closed and the other is an open continuous.

Good luck!

I too added a cover letter to my resume when I sent it in.

Here is how my hiring process went:

Once the job closed, I got an email in a few days that said I was "Among the best qualified for the position and if they were interested, they would call me. Two days later, I was called for an interview. 3 days after the interview, I was called that I was selected for the position.

I got the selection call on April 15th and got my firm offer on May 25th and start June 12th.

I was offered 2 positions and they never called any of my references. I am not sure why this is, I was shocked,.

UPDATE: original tentative offer received on April 13th. Firm offer received on May 25th and I start June 12th

Hi everyone, it's amazing how this thread has been going strong since 2012!!!!!! I'm interested in working for the VA. I'm currently in the early stage where the posting closed on 5/19/17 and I received an email on 5/26/17 saying I was "referred" to the selecting official for consideration. I'm praying that this is a good sign and that I get called for an interview soon!!!!!

P.S. All of your posts have been very helpful in knowing how this process goes.
