UWOSH Accelerated Nursing May 2016 Cohort

U.S.A. Wisconsin

Published

Hi guys. Wanted to start a topic/thread for those applying into the May 2016 cohort, now that the application has opened. Has anyone else noticed on the application that the 2 recommendations are no longer required? Thought this was interesting.

As for me, I'm getting ready to take the TEAS V (Aug 1st) and finishing my CNA course next week with the state exam in August. I have a few months of CNA experience in a long term adult care facility and just got a job as a CNA at a local pediatric long term care facility, which I'm looking forward to since this is the area of nursing I hope to focus on after graduating (peds.) I graduated from the Univ of Pittsburgh back in 2001 with a dual BS in Psych and Business and did most of my post bach work in clinical psych (inpatient, outpatient, step down, peds again..) Applied and was accepted to PA school back in 2002 but decided that being a PA wasn't exactly what I wanted to do so waited, got married, had kids yada yada. Here I am, mid 30s, 2 young boys, applying into UWOSH. How about you? Say hi and introduce yourself so we can get to know one another during this ride. :) :)

I believe you were referring to the TEAS testing site being 300 miles away. But a closer one pooping up.

Hey Panalitos,

The testing site I was referring to was for the my CNA test. I was trying to schedule it at the end of July beginning of August and at that time the only testing site was on Grant Pass, which is about 300 miles from me. Luckily another testing site opened that was closure.

As for the TEAS test, there should be at least 2 testing sites in the Portland area.

By the way, you might want to apply to the May cohort despite your limited CNA experience. I will have had every little if any experience by the end of this year but I anticipate being able to accrue more experience between now and May. If you do wait until Oct., do you plan to reapply to OHSU and Linfield?

Here's a random question that popped up in our family recently and I thought I'd reach out to you guys to see if you knew.

What if you ended up moving to a state- outside the one you're residing in during the program-after graduating? What if it isn't one of the 'approved states' on the list for UWOSH? I'm guessing that won't matter much and it is more relevant for the clinical preceptorship and not for graduates. So here's a possible scenario: we moved from CA to PA and will reside in PA while I'm in this program. We will most likely stay in PA after, but there is a chance that we might end up back in CA. Because CA isn't an 'approved' state, does that mean I'd have difficulty getting a CA license? Would I have to first get my PA RN license and then apply (by endorsement I think it's called) to be able to work in CA?

These are questions I can email to the university of course, but I was curious. And I remember seeing in previous cohorts people from CA moving to OR to do the program (so I'm guessing they might have a similar situation.) Any idea about this?

Hi GrenIedGal,

I would recommended contacting the CA nursing board to verify with them. I believe I contacted UWOSH about this issue and they referred me to the state nursing board for clarification. If possible it would likely be easiest to transfer your nursing license. Unfortunately you have to go through the application process but it was much easier for my husband as a nurse to do so from one state to another than it was more me as a social worker. The NCLEX is a national test as far as I know, thus, you should be able to get licensed in CA either way. I hope that helps!

It is only for the preceptorship part.

approved only means the states that gave their approval for uwosh to have preceptors there.

I'm actually surprised Oregon is one of them.

I've been wondering this same thing. Hopefully a non-approved state is simply one that they do not have local assets so they would prefer not to take people from that state. Worst case and what i was a little afraid of was that certain states did not recognize UWO's nursing program, which is hopefully not the case. If you do contact them and find out you should let us know :).

Once you are eligible to take the NCLEX and pass it, you are eligible for licensure in all states. I asked Sue, the advisor at one time of the uwosh program. Also my family is full of nurses and nurse practitioners from all of the United states. As long as you program is acredited and eligible for the NCLEX you are good.

How well known/respected is the program? I am planning on continuing my education and would hate to run into any hiccups transferring to other schools.

I'll apply to OHSU again. Not to Linfield. I'm desperate for a spot, but not $ 120,000 desperate. Their price is an insult.

Murse, just like Aje said, UWOSH is an accredited school. Therefore, there should be no problems regarding transferability.

I felt the same way originally, which is why I didn't apply to Linfield this past year. However, I heard they provide more financial assistance, which may offset the cost and make it more equitable to OHSU. I don't know the details however.

I am scheduled to take the TEAS on September 4th. I took a practice test online tonight and now I am worried. I did fine in reading and english. So so in math, but I think if I brush up on a few things I will be okay. I did horrible in science. I am really surprised because I have a science degree and love science. I think I was a little startled by all the chemistry questions. So any suggestions for studying up on the science? I have the manual and plan to study it.

Anybody turned in their application already?

Aje, I was VERY nervous about the science and I too love science. The practice tests are hard. I think they were almost harder than the actual test.

The chem questions were the ones I always got wrong and on the test, I only ended up w a few basic Chemistry questions. I think I scored a 100% in that portion of science. Try not to stress too much, just know the ATI manual and do the practice tests. As for

math, have you watched the Keshwani Prep TEAS on YouTube? He's great. Highly recommend taking the time to watch his videos for a good review. My problem was I ran out of time on math, so watch the clock. It's the one section that's making me question if I should retake the test. :(

I'm wondering if I should email Sues replacement and ask if my score is competitive enough.

Anyway, feel free to pm me for more teas info. You'll do great, no worries. :)

I'm taking my CNA exam on Friday and plan to get my application together next weekend to send off 1st week of September. I've filled out the paperwork and my CV is ready, just waiting on the CNA exam. :)

Grenledgal thank you for the reassurance! I had plenty of time left on the Math with the practice. I plan to be strategic and be able to answer some of the math questions quickly by eliminating answers. So I hope to be under the time limit. Although I think there are four more actual questions on the exam than on the practice ones.

Thanks for the link for math. I will definitely watch those!
