Hi guys. Wanted to start a topic/thread for those applying into the May 2016 cohort, now that the application has opened. Has anyone else noticed on the application that the 2 recommendations are no longer required? Thought this was interesting.
As for me, I'm getting ready to take the TEAS V (Aug 1st) and finishing my CNA course next week with the state exam in August. I have a few months of CNA experience in a long term adult care facility and just got a job as a CNA at a local pediatric long term care facility, which I'm looking forward to since this is the area of nursing I hope to focus on after graduating (peds.) I graduated from the Univ of Pittsburgh back in 2001 with a dual BS in Psych and Business and did most of my post bach work in clinical psych (inpatient, outpatient, step down, peds again..) Applied and was accepted to PA school back in 2002 but decided that being a PA wasn't exactly what I wanted to do so waited, got married, had kids yada yada. Here I am, mid 30s, 2 young boys, applying into UWOSH. How about you? Say hi and introduce yourself so we can get to know one another during this ride. :) :)
I am not going to submit until I have everything completed. I don't think when you submit will affect their decisions as long as it is by the deadline and everything is complete. I know we also have until October 15th to complete the TEAS. I plan to get mine scheduled soon to give me a deadline. How long did it take to get your teas results?

36 hours. I checked like a crazy woman. :)
Hi Snwbal41786:
I am also in the Oregon / border WA area
Since we can choose 2 locations I will also choose the Tucson, AZ area.
My background is also in Social Work from Eastern Washington University and also Addictions Counseling.I have been volunteering with an addctions center.
I have worked for 15 yrs between OHSU, Legacy, PeaceHealth and many other facilites as an interpreter. This job has given me all sorts of exposure inside the OR, ER, etc.
Unfortunately it does not seem to count as experience, at least not for OHSU.
Did you ever applied to OHSU?
I did last year, but my Social work degree got posted after the selection process.
Finishing my CNA trainig.
I am very scared of the TEAS.
Anyway, Happy to be in this forum & help each other along the process.
Best of Luck yo all of Us
Panalitos
Hi Panalitos!
I have to say I've been very disappointed and frustrated with OHSU and their whole admission process. My understanding is they primarily go off of GPA in its totality, meaning classed unrelated to nursing and completed 10 years ago have equal wait to recent prerequisite courses. I've been waitlisted with OHSU. I know OHSU is considered a big deal in this area but I haven't been impressed with the school of nursing thus far.
Don't worry about the TEAS test. Just like with social worker, take practice tests to familiarize yourself with the questions and testing style. I'm sure you'll do great.
In terms of picking two locations, do they have to be completely different areas? If I'm accepted to UWOSH I don't want to move. I'm open to traveling quite some distance for the clinical, just not out of state. For me that defeats the purpose of the online program.

Hi Panalitos!
Snwbal, Sorry to hear that OHSU hasn't been all that you hoped during the application process. is that your first choice? I've heard good things about OHSU. Congrats on being on the list!
If you're referring to UWOSH (and not OHSU) I dont think we have to pick a second location. I always read it as an option if there was a possibility you would be moving during the 12 month program. This way they have an idea if they've previously matched up students w preceptors there, or if it will be a new area etc. The question that always gets me is the one "where do you see yourself working as a nurse when you complete the program?" Wonder why they want to know that.
Hey GrenledGal,
I only applied to OHSU because of proximity. It is a teaching school and has a great reputation but the overall admission process and interaction with most staff has been extremely frustrating. If it's representative of what school would be like then I don't think it would be ideal. Having said that, if I'm accepted off the waitlist I'll definitely accept because of it's proximity and when the program would start.
Congrats aje.
i just realized. I'll apply to the October 2016 cohort.
i will still follow your forum, so I can learn tips from you.
Once you you get accepted, if you could share how many prerequisite you had left to take but still got in & what GPA got you a seat.
ill ask again once you guys get your seats : )

Hey Panalitos,
From what I understand As and Bs in the prerequisite courses will make you most competitive, which makes sense.
I'm actually most worried about the CNA experience because they really seem to emphasis that.
Do you have too many prereqs to take to apply to the May Cohort?

Our skills test always starts with handwashing as your 1st skill. There are a total of 5, so only 4 others. Apparently there is always a 'measurement, an easier skill and a harder one, plus a random one they throw at you.' So we'll see. I'm sure the week of, I'll be very nervous!
I agree definitely schedule the TEAS, so it's at least on the books for you. Even if it's a few weeks away, you'll have secured your spot.
So are you guys waiting to apply until you have everything completed or are you sending it in early and submitting things as you complete them? I've been waiting, really only on this CNA exam so I can submit a 'completed' application with a copy of my certification. I'm not sure that is the best thing to do tho. Apparently they don't look at applications in the order received, but by completeness anyway, and closer to the deadline.. but I guess I'm second guessing my decision on waiting.
