UWOSH Accelerated Nursing May 2016 Cohort

Published

Hi guys. Wanted to start a topic/thread for those applying into the May 2016 cohort, now that the application has opened. Has anyone else noticed on the application that the 2 recommendations are no longer required? Thought this was interesting.

As for me, I'm getting ready to take the TEAS V (Aug 1st) and finishing my CNA course next week with the state exam in August. I have a few months of CNA experience in a long term adult care facility and just got a job as a CNA at a local pediatric long term care facility, which I'm looking forward to since this is the area of nursing I hope to focus on after graduating (peds.) I graduated from the Univ of Pittsburgh back in 2001 with a dual BS in Psych and Business and did most of my post bach work in clinical psych (inpatient, outpatient, step down, peds again..) Applied and was accepted to PA school back in 2002 but decided that being a PA wasn't exactly what I wanted to do so waited, got married, had kids yada yada. Here I am, mid 30s, 2 young boys, applying into UWOSH. How about you? Say hi and introduce yourself so we can get to know one another during this ride. :) :)

I'm curious if any of you have heard anything about other prospective applicants and the amount of CNA experience they have...? It sounds like all of us are still in the process of becoming certified, which means we'll have limited on the job experiences besides from clinicals. It seems like a few people who were accepted for 2015 really emphasized their CNA experience. I don't know about you guys but this makes me a little nervous...

Okay, here's an odd question.... my TEAS ATI study manual is MISSING the answer key for practice test 2! WHAT GIVES?!

Does anyone have the recent book with the answer section that could help me out? (Esp with the science answers, I took the test last night but can't score it....) My book ends with page 320 and the index says practice test answer key page 325. *Shaking head...*

Oh, did I mention I'm taking the TEAS test tomorrow morning?!! Would love to see the answers if anyone has them?

I wish I could help but the study guide I purchased wasn't through ATI. You might try calling ATI to see if they can send you a copy of the key via email. Sorry you're having to deal with this, I'm sure it must be frustrating. I'm sure you'll do great tomorrow!

Thanks snwbal and no worries. Figured I'd throw it out there in case someone could send it.

I have hte McGraw Hill practice tests and I purchased the ATI online one that I'm going to take again this evening.

As for ATI, I emailed them this AM and their advice was to return it to the store I purchased it at for a refund/exchange. Considering I purchased it while living in San Diego (and now live PA) that's not very feasible. Plus I took notes in it, oh and I'm taking hte exam tomorrow. LOL. ;)

Ready to get it over with! :)

Customer service really stinks sometimes. I find companies' responses completely unhelpful often :(

Well the TEAS went fine. Tiring, yes, but not incredibly difficult. I was upset that I didn't get to finish the math--all of the other sections I had a lot of time to spare. This was reflective in my score, but overall I did fine and I'm telling myself not to worry too much. (Hard when I was scoring almost 100% in math on the practice exams and online practice exam tho!) Anyway, my overall was 85% which put me in the 95th percentile rank nationally and 96% for the program according to ATI. I've seen so many really high scores on here....I'm hoping that's good enough! For me, I wanted to do well since I've been out of school for so long. But I still wish you were able to retake individual sections, because I know I could do better in the math (um, by finishing it!) Sigh. Onward tho, right?

Great job GrenledGal! I wasn't able to finish the math section either. I found the actual math test more challenging than the practice tests.

In regards to other testing...I took the NA state exam on Sunday. It was more challenging than I expected. The written test had questions that were completely different than the final/practice tests I took for the actual NA program. The skills test wasn't bad. It's nerve wracking to recall what you did and didn't do after the fact though because it's all a burr and hard to recall afterward. I know 2 people from my training site failed the written test. Just wanted to let everyone know so you have a heads up. Oh, fyi my test is through HeadMaster. I'm not sure if all states are. Wish me luck, I get my results Wednesday night!

Passed my CNA test!!!! Good luck to everyone else on this test!

Congrats to both of you! You guys are moving along nicely! My CNA test is on Saturday. I am pretty nervous because if I don't pass for some reason, I don't think I can get another test date before the deadline for the application.

I still haven't registered for the TEAS. I start my new job at the hospital on Monday and I want to get the orientation out of the way before I take the TEAS. So I am hoping for sometime at the end of August or beginning of September.

Just focusing on the CNA test at this point. Now you have me questioning the written. I was thinking it wouldn't be too bad. The final for our class was 100 questions and I scored a 92.

Congrats on your CNA snwbal! That's very exciting.

Now I'm wondering how the written will go as well. Are all the CNA exams by the ARC? Figure it was nationwide..

I had a 99% in my CNA class, I missed one question on one of the quizzes and my teacher gave us 2 practice exams for the written. Our tests were very easy and I wasn't worried about the written, but now... I'm going to think on it a bit more! I hope it wasn't poor practice for the state exam! How was the skills? I'm actually a bit nervous about that part. Just remembering all the little details. I don't take my exam until 8/28, but just got an email confirming my registration for that day. Aje, I could always send you the 2 written practice exams if you'd like? I don't have them electronic but since your test is soon, I could send them as an image or something. Just let me know. I'm sure you'll do great!

I started my CNA job on Tuesday. It was all classroom the first day and on the floor with my Nurse Tech preceptor yesterday. It was a bit overwhelming but in a good way. I'm working at a LTC facility for highly complex medical needs children and adolescents. Most of the children have trachs and many are on vents. (Although there are a few with less critical needs running around the floor.) Learning to disconnect/detach the trachs for ADLs is SCARY! The tech said 'just remember, since this is their only airway, it's like they are taking a breath and holding it when you disconnect.' Between that and always checking that they don't decannulate (or knowing the sounds of decannulation)--WOW. I'm sure to learn a ton at this job, in a fast time, but I'm also sure to be very overwhelmed during orientation. I told myself on my drive home last night that being overwhelmed is good. It means you care. Deep Breath.

I came home and hugged my two little guys extra tight..your health is EVERYTHING... and well, because I could hug them that tight and because they could be!

I did real well on the class final as well. It sounds like it was a similar format to yours. I ended up getting a 91 on the written piece. There were just some unusual questions. For instance, they described a bedside table but that wasn't one of the possible answers. Know examples of the different precautions (e.g. contact versus droplet). It just seems like a different format with more vague questions than any of the previous tests I took for the program.

I would really encourage you to at least scheduled your TEAS test because testing spots fill up. They did where I was at at least. Your schedule may be more flexible but I hadn't find a time for the weekend.

I'm sure you'll do great on the CNA test. Just make sure to point out when you'd be washing your hands, pull the safety curtain, leave the call light and maintain the ct's safety (e.g. bedrails when necessary, lock the bed, etc.). You'll do awesome!

That's super exciting GrenledGal. It sounds like you'll get a lot of great experience. I'm not trying to scare anyone by any means but I found the program exams easier than that actual written test. Having said that, I passed. As for the skills, I had hand-washing, bedpan, repositioning a patient, foot-care and denture care. My test was through HeadMaster, which is out of state and it looks like they only handle the exam for about half a dozen states. Through August here, hand-washing is the first skill but starting in September that is part of the skills but it's not one of the 5 skills, which made it easy for me :) You all are smart and will do great on the exam!
