UW BSN 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello All!

I am applying the the University of Washington BSN program, starting in Fall 2017. I was curious how everyone's' applications process is going? Have you submitted your applications yet, what are your healthcare, and volunteer experiences? Do you feel prepared for nursing school? Why are you interested in the UW? Do you have any questions about your application?

I am just starting my application for the UW nursing program, starting in fall of 2017. I am an Emergency Dept. Tech. I really enjoy it, but I definitely want to learn how to be a better and more reactive caregiver, and I think nursing provides an excellent pathway to learn and develop great care giving skills.

Good Luck!

I am totally unsure how I did. The math was a bummer because I studied everything except IV drip!! I know I got the first one right, but the other two, not so confident. As far as the essay goes... I felt solid about my opening and closing paragraphs. I don't think I gave specific enough examples and I remember writing two sentences that, at the time, I thought were good and in hindsight sounded pretty biased. I remember listening to the online info session and she said, if we have to guess what you meant, we will go with someone else.

I don't know. We will see in 2 months.

Where did you hear 250 taking essay? All I heard was when she said 611 originally applied! We should all feel proud that we made it to the essay, and to those that didn't it gives context on how tremendously competitive it was this year!!

That was extremely stressful, but atleast we have the out of the way! The waiting is going to be horrible haha. I surprisingly felt pretty good about my essay given the time limit we had. My reasoning was the best I could come up with. Sadly I don't feel so confident about the math and I'm worried that might be what ruins my chances. Someone mentioned they got 28 or 24 above for the 3rd question but I did not get either of those answers.

Evening all - first of all, great job everyone! It's now just a waiting game...but the time will go quickly. As for the math questions, I did get 24 for the third question. I believe it worked out to 1 mg/hour over 24 hours. The first one I think I remember getting 200ml/hr which is equivalent to 300ml/90min; and for #2 1.2 mg/hr (for hydromorphone, that is in the middle of the therapeutic range).

I chose scenario #3 because that is the patient with whom I would have the least amount of experience. This to gain the most learnin as a student of nursing, I chose #3. There are endless answers which are correct...it just amounts to our being able to appropriately justify why we chose what we chose.

Have a great rest of your February and March everyone!!!

I got the same for both the first and second math problems. :) different for the third though but I could have messed up. Oh well, hopefully it won't affect me too badly.

Ok, phew, I got the same for the first 2 math problems. Honestly can't remember what I got for the third!!:x3: Maybe I did better than I think.

Also, it was pretty cool that out of all the seats in the place I sat next to @phredmeister :D!

@tle0041 Yes. I have a funny feeling that many people missed something on the maths. I double checked the 3rd question about 3 times. It should be 24mL. Everything canceled, and we were left with 1mL every hour for 24 hours.

@phredmeister is spot on with the answers to the maths. These were the answers solutions that I remember!

@mommanurse73, CNA. After the test I asked the proctors how many people were in attendance for the essay. They told me they had different counts... But it was around 250 people.

Yes mommanurse73, that was definitely cool that by chance we sat next to each other! I'm really excited about this whole process...and don't worry about one math question...I have read other blogs that indicate people have missed 1 and still been considered.

@tle00041 Don't beat yourself up because of one mistake on the test. We are still students and not expected to be perfect. One mistake does not mean you are not qualified! To me, it shows how deeply you care and how seriously you take the responsibility! I feel like this means you are actually MORE qualified, because that level of ethics is what it takes! Don't give up. If you don't make it this time try again, or try a different program. Remember, "do your best and no regrets"!

Yay I also got those answers for the math section but I feel like my essay wasn't very strong. I chose the patient in scenario three since I've worked with patients with renal failure and diabetes at my healthcare experience but have never worked with a pediatric patient before. I felt like I was being repetitive when answering the prompts. Sigh I guess we will wait and see!

Yea, it's all a waiting game from here. I've read threads from years past where students were feeling terrible post essay. Posting that their essay was repetitive, that they missed math questions and they ran out of time. A month later in the thread the same people were posting that they got in!! The essay is just one piece of our application. Yes, maybe the essay was weak, but if your application was strong it will balance out.

We all just need to take deep breaths and try to put it on the back burner for the next 7-9 weeks! (easier said than done!!:roflmao:) And believe me, I'm saying this as much for myself as for everyone else! I need these reminders too. :) That is why we all signed on to this forum. To support each other through this intense application process, and hopefully, to extend that support into the nursing program as fellow students!!

I can't imagine that we weren't all a little repetitive, especially with regard to question B and C. Like I said earlier, I chose option #3, but I chose it because I had the least amount of experience working with that patient. My thoughts being to gain the most learning by using nursing clinicals and supervision to their fullest extent. I have significant experience with the dementia patient as well as the patient with the suspected substance use disorder. That was my take on it anyhow. I took a similar approach to the questions as I did for the ABSN proctored essay and was placed on the waitlist...so I'm hopeful.

I am sure we all did well...I cannot imagine how tough it would be to screen all those applications, especially the 250 of us who made it to the essay session. They have a very tough job...I have great confidence in the UDub though, their philosophy of inclusion, diversity, and wholistic review is one major reason I am already proud to be a husky!
