  1. Hey y'all ABSN hopefuls! I made it into the ABSN '18 class! Yes, off the waitlist. Don't beat yourself up if you didn't make it in. The ABSN (and BSN) at UW is not that great at teaching you how to be a nurse. The School of Nursing (the same people who proctored your ****** essay) has decided that it is best to emphasize cultural humility over how to take a blood pressure, vital signs, and assess the health of a patient. They think if you can say hello to someone in a kind manner and if you don't offend another person's cultural experience you have the competence to be a nurse. They want to graduate social workers with nursing degrees. If you want to work in the ICU, go to Seattle University. They have much better clinical placements - look at the northwest clinical consortium website that determines the clinical placements for nursing programs. Think about it. 50K to become a social worker, or a Bad Ass ICU Nurse.
  2. @tle00041 I admire your enthusiasm! I want to get accepted so I can drop some prerequisite classes for other RN programs. It is so smart to have a second plan... I just don't want to have to use it.
  3. Has anyone got an email yet? It is after noon. I would expect them to be here soon. Hmmm.... ?
  4. Hopefully tomorrow. The wait is agonizing.
  5. I think I may be having nightmares waiting for the acceptance decision. I am trying to apply for community college RN programs, but I am finding it extremely tedious. I have to retake some classes - or have specific classes. I need to get a CNA. This is a lot of tedious work - which won't make me a better nurse. Is anyone else facing similar problems? Are any of you trying to get into other RN programs fighting a lot of red tape? "Late April" can't come soon enough!
  6. I chose scenario 3. I think this was my weakest section of my whole application. I have poor hand writing! I think I approached the essay in a similar way. First graph was an intro, and stated why I chose the patient (it would be the most challenging for me - I did not have as much medication experience or long-term patient care experience). Graph 2, Professional Gains - opportunities to use more pharmacology. Graph 3, professional challenge - finding resources for education and self-efficacy with insulin management. Graph 4 Personal gain - didn't have much to say, can't really remember what I wrote. Graph 5: Personal challenge not necessarily knowing patient outcome post discharge of care. - no time for good conclusion.
  7. @mommanurse73, CNA. After the test I asked the proctors how many people were in attendance for the essay. They told me they had different counts... But it was around 250 people.
  8. @tle0041 Yes. I have a funny feeling that many people missed something on the maths. I double checked the 3rd question about 3 times. It should be 24mL. Everything canceled, and we were left with 1mL every hour for 24 hours. @phredmeister is spot on with the answers to the maths. These were the answers solutions that I remember!
  9. Hurray! We all just finished the last extremely nerve wracking part of our application! The anxiety was palpable in the auditorium. I am not quite sure, but I think I heard there was 250 people who were in attendance and 11 out of area for the proctored essay, from an applicant pool of over 600 people. Wow! Good job for getting this far. How do ya think y'all fared? I know that I felt okay. Not bad, not great. I think I answered the med maths correctly, but the essay may have been very weak. I made an extremely rough outline and was going to do a draft, but I realized I didn't have time - Yikes! My essay definitely had cross outs and some rough transitions. I did try to explicitly write to each question assigning a paragraph to each question. I was debating to respond to scenario 2 or 3, but chose 3. This experiance was definitely stressful. We will see.... in almost 2 months! Mid-late April. Yuck. I hope all of you the best... But I selfishly hope that I did better... #honesty.
  10. @MowgliB0803 Hmmm.... I am sorry to hear that you weren't invited. You have a lot of courage to share that. So I have a similar background as you. I got a bachelor degree, took time off, then went back to school to "redo" prerequisites at Comm College because they were expired for some programs. My GPA at my previous college was 3.5ish - really bad Freshman year í ½í¸‹. I retook all of the required classes for natural world for UW and Stats - I got 4.0 for these classes. I work as an ED Tech. I have BLS, ACLS, MA-P and NA-R certifications and licenses. I think that it is important that you can show that you can successfully complete your science classes. I work in the ED as a tech. I also took 10-18 credits while working a 30-40 hour week. I think that this demonstrates that I can handle a rigorous schedule and workload, which is required for nurses and nursing students. I was most worried about volunteering and leadership experience. That was the weakest part of my application. I tried to do volunteer work outside of the medical field but still addressed problems in my community. I also read my letter of recommendation from my nurse manager. I found mistakes that needed correction, I have a good relationship with my manager, and it was very collaborative process. That letter of recommendation would be really difficult for someone to write, especially if your recommender does not know you well. It was more difficult than the personal statement. I just distinctly remember that during the info session the presenter said they wanted people who were prepared and most likely to complete the program. They take 96 students and want to graduate 96. Finish all of your prerequisites, and focus on things you can control to round out your application. Best of luck to you. You sound like an awesome candidate - you are gonna be there soon - and will most likely become a bad ass nurse. Just remember, UW is not the only option.
  11. Congrats to you! And welcome to the thread!
  12. I got my invite too! It has been making me happy all day! Congrats to everyone who got invited to the essay it is an accomplishment to get to this point... I have to say I was getting nervous as well! Anyone have any good suggestions to prepare for the essay?
  13. Does anyone know when we have to accept the offer to the ABSN program if we are to get in? I am curious, because I am applying to both the BSN and ABSN programs. Can we wait to accept the ABSN offer until after we know if accepted to the normal BSN program? I have been slightly anxious about this. As always the group therapy and advice is helpful! Keep it up!
  14. I have been working for 2 years in an Emergency Department - probably around 5000 hours. I am worried about volunteer experience though. Deadline is coming up quickly. almost 1 month... Yikes! Anyone have some good advice.
  15. Totally agree with my nerves increasing as we get closer to the deadline. This definitely doesn't make the holidays any easier! I hope you all the best...
