UW BSN 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello All!

I am applying the the University of Washington BSN program, starting in Fall 2017. I was curious how everyone's' applications process is going? Have you submitted your applications yet, what are your healthcare, and volunteer experiences? Do you feel prepared for nursing school? Why are you interested in the UW? Do you have any questions about your application?

I am just starting my application for the UW nursing program, starting in fall of 2017. I am an Emergency Dept. Tech. I really enjoy it, but I definitely want to learn how to be a better and more reactive caregiver, and I think nursing provides an excellent pathway to learn and develop great care giving skills.

Good Luck!

@MowgliB0803 --- I think they might prefer student who had completed A&P, MicroBio, and BioChem-(for UW student only) with higher GPA over who do not complete any of them because I heard in the past, they accepted some people like your situation, but they failed to passing one those class when the program started. Also, I think you need to explain why you have few "W"s on your transcript bcuz they might be afraid if you withdraw again when you are in the their program. If you have a bachelor, you could try for UW ABSN program. Or you can get an ADN (RN) from College, then apply for RN to MSN at WSU (cuz you have a bachelor) to save money like my niece. At the end, we just need a license to work. It doesn't matter which school we study at, what we learnt and how much we learnt does matter. The one who gets total 2.9 GPA at UW BSN is worse than the one who earns 3.0 GPA at College RN. We need at least 3.0 GPA cumulative in nursing to apply for MSN/Practitioner. My key is don't let the school choose us; we have the power to choose them. And UW BSN is only an option, so try to apply for as many schools as possible. Moreover, UW don't invite you doesn't mean you aren't good enough, just bcuz this year there is more super excellent people applied than last year. You can try again next year with your new achievement/improvement. Don't give up, and you will see your way to be successful Nurse with/without entering the UW BSN program. Best of luck!!!

@MowgliB0803 Hmmm.... I am sorry to hear that you weren't invited. You have a lot of courage to share that. So I have a similar background as you. I got a bachelor degree, took time off, then went back to school to "redo" prerequisites at Comm College because they were expired for some programs. My GPA at my previous college was 3.5ish - really bad Freshman year í ½í¸‹. I retook all of the required classes for natural world for UW and Stats - I got 4.0 for these classes. I work as an ED Tech. I have BLS, ACLS, MA-P and NA-R certifications and licenses. I think that it is important that you can show that you can successfully complete your science classes.

I work in the ED as a tech. I also took 10-18 credits while working a 30-40 hour week. I think that this demonstrates that I can handle a rigorous schedule and workload, which is required for nurses and nursing students. I was most worried about volunteering and leadership experience. That was the weakest part of my application. I tried to do volunteer work outside of the medical field but still addressed problems in my community.

I also read my letter of recommendation from my nurse manager. I found mistakes that needed correction, I have a good relationship with my manager, and it was very collaborative process. That letter of recommendation would be really difficult for someone to write, especially if your recommender does not know you well. It was more difficult than the personal statement.

I just distinctly remember that during the info session the presenter said they wanted people who were prepared and most likely to complete the program. They take 96 students and want to graduate 96.

Finish all of your prerequisites, and focus on things you can control to round out your application. Best of luck to you. You sound like an awesome candidate - you are gonna be there soon - and will most likely become a bad ass nurse. Just remember, UW is not the only option.

Tomorrow is the big day. I am soooooo nervous!! I haven't written anything by hand in over 10 years. Darn technology lol. Good luck everyone

Hello hello! I also received an invitation to the proctored exam.. can't believe it's already tomorrow! Good luck everybody, I'm off to read the forums from previous years hahaha

I know!! I feel the same way! Spell check and auto correct has weakened my spelling skills! lol. My anxiety is really ramping up for tomorrow's essay, too. Trying to not give into it (the anxiety), but the knowledge of what this hour will determine weighs heavy on me....

Oh yea, and good luck to all of you out there! We made it this far, hopefully we can make it to the finish!! :)

Evening all...I applied to both the ABSN and BSN programs this year, thus I have already had an opportunity to sit for the proctored essay. As a 42 year old non-traditional student, I was very apprehensive going into it the first time but after it was done, I felt really good about the result. Fortunately, I have been doing a significant amount of writing in my MSW program for the last three years making grammar, spelling, and punctuation a non-issue.

I must have done ok because I got waitlisted for the ABSN program. I feel the most important things to remember are FOLLOW the directions completely and answer all the questions in the prompt. Time yourself appropriately and use all space provided, without going over. Just like the application, the instructions are very, very specific. They are looking for accuracy and the ability to think critically in a timed environment.

Most of all...be confident! We have all made it this far...best of luck to everyone. I hope to call all of you my nursing colleagues very soon!!!

@phredmeister thanks for that! I am a non traditional student as well, at 43, post BA and lots (I mean lots) of life experience. I agree and have read that the most important part is to follow all the directions and make sure to answer every part of the question, as well. It's great to get input from someone who's been there! For me, the biggest part will be remembering to stay calm while I'm there. Connecting on this forum has helped quell some of that anxiety. I hope to call you and everyone on this form my nursing colleagues too! Good luck! :D

Good luck to all that are writing the proctored essay today!

My one piece of advice: Do the math first. People tend to underestimate how much time they actually need to do math problems, and you don't want to be scrambling at the last minute trying to solve a question that actually has a right or wrong answer. Oh, and stay calm!

See you all later!

To those who may not have made it to this year's proctored essay, I definitely invite you to reach out to us towards the end of April once we're able to send out final admissions decisions. In the past, I've been able to sit down with applicants and look at their application to identify areas of strength/weakness. If you reach out to us in April, we should be able to do so again.

Hurray! We all just finished the last extremely nerve wracking part of our application! The anxiety was palpable in the auditorium. I am not quite sure, but I think I heard there was 250 people who were in attendance and 11 out of area for the proctored essay, from an applicant pool of over 600 people. Wow! Good job for getting this far.

How do ya think y'all fared? I know that I felt okay. Not bad, not great. I think I answered the med maths correctly, but the essay may have been very weak. I made an extremely rough outline and was going to do a draft, but I realized I didn't have time - Yikes! My essay definitely had cross outs and some rough transitions. I did try to explicitly write to each question assigning a paragraph to each question. I was debating to respond to scenario 2 or 3, but chose 3.

This experiance was definitely stressful. We will see.... in almost 2 months! Mid-late April. Yuck. I hope all of you the best... But I selfishly hope that I did better... #honesty.

I finish the whole thing. I just realized I make a mistake after I sign my name when turn the essay in. Man, I make mistake on the 3rd question. The answer must be 24ml instead of 28ml. A minor mistake possibly kill people, so I think I am not qualified to be a BSN student. I choose scenario 2, bcuz I used to provide care to this type of patient at the rehab center, and this patient make me think about my grandmother and my mom. Also, I didn't have time to correct all my spelling. It's fine, I will assume my application get rejected. And now, I am ready for the Teastest on Monday to apply College RN program. Best luck to all and especially to any whom get accepted!!! My niece told me: "You got this, just do the very best you can and you will walk away with no regrets."

I feel very confident about my essay and my math problems! The math was a lot easier than I expected. Now all we can do is trust we did our best and wait! @tle0041 I'm not sure how you got either of those answers because mine was completely different but I'll wait and see what others say.
