UW ABSN 2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone! Just wanted to start a forum for those applying to University of Washington's ABSN program for Fall 2020. I'm applying from California and unfortunately, I don't have any healthcare experience working directly with/under nurses as I'm an ophthalmic technician. I graduated last year with a BS in Health Science with a focus in Community Health.

Any feedback/advice on becoming a stronger applicant are welcome, or sharing your progress in the application is great too! Thanks! ?

Hello everyone,

Thanks to the OP for starting this forum. I'm also applying for the UW 2020 ABSN cohort.

I just moved to Seattle from the Bay Area a little over 2 months ago. I'm currently a respiratory therapist at Seattle children's Hospital and have been an RT since 2016. I've worked with peds, AICU, and NICU. but decided to transition to nursing for more opportunities for growth. I was going to nursing school at San Francisco State University and completed 1 year (out of 3 years) of the accelerated masters nursing program I was in with straight A's, but my husband just got a job at Amazon so I had to leave my program. I'm happy the program available out here is just a one-year BSN. I plan to work just per diem (maybe a couple days a month) while I'm in school or if things get super overwhelming, I don't mind quitting my job altogether to focus on school.

I just have a question. I'm a little confused on the prereqs. Do we HAVE to take organic chemistry or do we just need a minimum of 3 natural world courses? I didn't understand the requirements. I have AP 1, chemistry, and microbiology. But I don't have organic chemistry or AP 2. SFSU didn't require it or I would've taken it. ?

Hey everyone!

I'm applying for the ABSN for the Fall 2020 start. I am quite nervous because I'm having a difficult time finding a way to get a letter of recommendation. While I work as a CNA, I am in home-care, so I don't have a nurse who watches me. I have shadowed a nurse, but I didn't do any hands on work for her to witness. Hopefully I can figure something out by the deadline.

I am pretty comfortable with my GPA's, I have a Natural World GPA of 3.75 (missing A&PII) and a cumulative undergrad GPA of 3.87. I have 660 hours of hands on health care as a home-care CNA, 60+ hours of volunteer work on an inpatient pediatrics floor, and 30+ hours of shadowing in a labor and delivery floor. My resume is okay. I'm new-ish to the area, so my community connections aren't the best here and I've been a full time student this whole time so leadership is lacking slightly. This application so far is very intense, so I'm just taking it one step at a time and hoping for the best.

Never mind, y'all! I figured out the answer to my question above and found a community college that offers those classes fully online (with lab component) for those of us who work full-time and can't quit just yet. If anyone needs extra prerequisites and wants to learn about the program, let me know!

One more question in case someone comes across this:

Does anyone know how we submit the Letter of Recommendation? Does the recommender upload it themselves, or do we upload it with our application?

Thanks!

I believe the recommender would need to upload it themselves. You would enter their information into your application and they'll receive a link for them to upload it within a certain time frame.

OMG, I'm from the Bay Area too! Lol. But anyways, I'm glad you were able to find a program that can help you accomplish the pre-reqs without having to quit your job. Unfortunately, I won't be able to apply to the ABSN program this year anymore as I have a C in physio and I need to have at least a B in order to apply. All the community colleges near me that offer the class are full. So instead I'll be applying to UW's BSN program instead, as well as Clark College's AA-Nursing program in Vancouver, WA.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! ?

Are you sure you don't want to still apply? If you have a minimum of 3 of the other natural world sciences (including nutrition, which I didn't even know was considered a natural world science), then you don't even have to include your C in physio as one of your grades. You can just put that you plan to take it within the next year. And then you can take it at the online community college that I'm taking mine at. They offer 6-week and 8-week classes and it's fully online, including the lab.

It's up to you though, whatever you decide is all good! ?

Good afternoon everyone!

I'm also applying to UW ABSN 2020. Should I not receive admission, I will turn around and apply to the traditional BSN program.

My husband is in the US Army, and we're relocating up to the Joint Base Lewis-McChord area NEXT WEEK!

I'm steadily working through the application process. Resumé building has definitely been the hardest challenge since UW has their own requirements. I have over 6,000 hours of healthcare related experience, but most of it NOT directly related to nursing. I did volunteer over 635 at a hospital, and the rest is from working in physical therapy, or shadowing physicians. I am taking a CNA program in October to get more nurse-related healthcare experience.

I have nearly all natural world prerequisites complete. I start nutrition next week, and I am currently finishing Life-Span Growth and Development. With regard to a previous question, all natural world prereqs must be complete at the START of the program, but only three must be completed at the time of application.

My undergraduate degree is in biochemistry, and my overall GPA is a 3.83. Prereq GPA is slightly higher (I think?).

I've looked at quite a few of the previous forums regarding the proctored essay and have slowly been calming my nerves. I'll be there early (WITH SNACKS!) to try and get the jitters out.

Anyone here who has applied previously to the program?

Also, I'll be new up in Washington and would love to meet like-minded people. My husband and I bought a house in Lacey and I would love to make some friends. ?

Best of luck to EVERYONE! I know each of you has your own strengths to play. You are all valued, important, and knowledgable. Whether or not we get in doesn't matter (YET!), we'll still make a difference in this world.

Warmly,

Sam

I dont understand the prerequisite requirements. Im currently taking inorganic chemistry with lab, nutrition, physio with lab, anatomy with lab, life span and development and microbiology with lab.

Is it mandatory to do both inorganic and organic chemistry? I am confused on the three minimum natural world aspect

Good questions! Yes, you need both general and organic chem. I'm not completely sure if the school you're currently attending considers inorganic chem as general, but always double check to make sure it will be transferrable to UW. UW also requires that you have at least 3 of the Natural World pre-reqs completed with at least a B (3.0) when you apply. You can still be "in-progress" with the remaining pre-reqs during the application period, but if you get accepted you need to make sure you are finished with ALL Natural World pre-reqs by the time you enter into the actual ABSN program.

Hope that helps and good luck! ?

It's called Barton County community college on bartonline.org. I'm taking lifespan development right now and plan to take A&P2 and o-chem with them. I checked all the courses with the UW school of nurses, and they approved them. Hope this helps!

Thanks amazing! Thank you! Are you from Kansas!? Do you know difficulty of either of those classes? I need to retake o chem because I didn’t get a B and I have to retake phys because it’s “too old” haha
