UW ABSN 2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone! Just wanted to start a forum for those applying to University of Washington's ABSN program for Fall 2020. I'm applying from California and unfortunately, I don't have any healthcare experience working directly with/under nurses as I'm an ophthalmic technician. I graduated last year with a BS in Health Science with a focus in Community Health.

Any feedback/advice on becoming a stronger applicant are welcome, or sharing your progress in the application is great too! Thanks! ?

You will need to answer some questions about a patient scenario. Tough to prepare for this, but I would recommend keeping ideas about cultural humility, interprofessional collaboration, and holistic care in the forefront of your mind.

Be prepared to do some math, esp. dimensional analysis. Don't neglect long division with decimals. I would do every practice question on dosagehelp.com. I took the proctored exam twice, first for ABSN and again for BSN. The first time I came in without preparing for the math and ended up completely bombing it, even though I got the right answers... You MUST show your work. It's not weighted as a huge portion of the application, but it could mean the difference between landing on the waitlist and getting accepted outright. The second time I nailed the math and I'm convinced it was the little bit extra I needed to be accepted (I changed little else about my application). Good luck to you!

Hi Lauren,

Thanks for the pointers on the proctor essay. you said to "keeping ideas about cultural humility, interprofessional collaboration, and holistic care in the forefront of your mind." These are the same main ideas in our personal statement essay. My question is, is it OK to use the same work examples I used in the personal statement for the proctor essay? will that come off as slacking? Another question is were there any word count requirement from your experience? We are doing it online this year (tomorrow), so we will be typing. I see it as an advantage, but I am not sure how they want us to show the work for the math portion... Can't wait to get this over with.  Thank you for your time in advance!

Hi everyone,

I am trying to get my pre-reqs done to apply for the BSN and ABSN program during the upcoming open application dates in August and October. I am planning to get my pre-reqs done at Bellevue College. Does anyone happen to know if their Chem 131 course which is labelled as "Intro to Chem/Biochem" will fulfill the Organic Chemistry requirement?

The Pre-req checklist sheet offered by UW shows sample courses for Chem as CHEM 120,220, and 221, but there is no sample for the required O chem course..

Any suggestion and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi there, I can't answer this question for you but I know that when I emailed UW about my prerequisites, they were so kind and fast at getting back to me. Here is the email [email protected]

Good luck!

@kangaroo Thank you for the great advice and peace of mind. They answered my questions within a week. I am still communicating with them. To anyone who has questions, ask [email protected] is the way to go. Good Luck everyone!

Hey everyone,

I am wondering if anybody can provide information about the Waitlist for your admissions cycle. Specifically, whether anyone knows/remembers how long the waitlist was during your admissions cycle, and about how many people were accepted. If you were accepted from the waitlist, what was your original ranking?

Thanks so much in advance. I am currently on the waitlist for fall 2021.

Hi there. They make the waitlist pretty long (60+?), just in case. I am in the program now and my original position on the waitlist was #14. I wasn't notified of my acceptance until late June. I know I was not the last person to be admitted from the waitlist, but I was pretty close. Waiting is the worst... as challenging as the program has been, waiting to hear about acceptance was still the worst! I wish you luck.

Appreciate the response. I am one or two behind where you were, but found this pretty encouraging. Gah, you said it about Waiting, especially during the pandemic, when it times it feels like there's not much else to do. Brutal.
