UTMB Summer '09 Applicants

Published

I'm wondering who applied for the UTMB Summer 2009 semester, and if they have received any news from UTMB. My status says "pending", and all my information was received. I don't know how big the applicant pool is considering the hurricane. I haven't seen any news on here about UTMB recently, so anything is appreciated. Thanks.

I did my FAFSA on Tuesday I think, and I found out everything Thursday. The information goes through really fast. All I have to do is accept my "award". Scholarships vary, and you have to apply for them individually. UTMB offers some that you can find on the website. I heard that there isn't a whole lot of funds for available for the summer students because a lot was taken out from spring and fall, but it doesn't hurt to apply (there are still some funds available). They said it's also a good idea to complete the 2009-2010 FAFSA to prepare us for fall. By the way I went to amazon.com and found all of the books for a low price!!! I am still unsure of what software to purchase for the pda??? Oh well. Hopefully I will find out soon.

You give great advice Bazooka! I ordered my books and PDA online this morning, so I'm all set! I think they said that they will tell us about the software, and help us upload it at orientation. I wanted to make sure my PDA was here in time!

I bet I know your identity. Did you interview around 8 am? Did your husband drive you to the interview? If so, I know exactly who you are! I interviewed around the same time and sat across from you to your right while we were waiting.

I ordered mostly everything last night. I never really bought many books on-line, but I have to be really tight with my money right now. Hopefully I get the books before class starts....I ordered ground shipping so it could take a while. I got the Ipod touch 16G as my PDA. Wasn't able to get a cell phone/pda (oh well, hopefully the itouch will be ok). Didn't want to get it before orientation, but after finding out we needed it, i caved.

I had my interview at 2:30pm, so it wasn't me! I had to drive myself because my husband was at work. I look forward to meeting you though! I think it would be nice if we could find out who everyone is before classes start! That way we know who we've been talking to during this whole process.

Ok, well I borrowed this idea from the UT Houston Fall 2009 thread, and I created a facebook group for the summer 2009 students. It's called: UTMB Summer 2009 Nursing

If you are interested, let me know. It's brand new, and I'd like to have some activity on it! Especially since I am SUPER SUPER bored! haha. I look forward to school starting because it will give me something to do! I am going crazy here!

Hey Bazooka and everyone its debra

I had to re-register with allnurses.com so now I'm toady123.

I am sooo excited about starting the summer nursing program at UTMB. I had to go back and read a lot of postings to get caught up and was disappointed that some are discouraged because they think that UTMB doesn't have their act together. I am very pleased that they gave us a months notice not several days as indicated. Also whoever thinks that needs to go back and read postings for UT-Houston, TWU and other nursing school because some of them give much less than that. Oh well I am happy to be in the program and proud that its UTMB.

About financial aid. I have already found out exactly what I qualify for and sent in paperwork to release the funds which I should have by this week or next. I think UTMB has been good about returning phone calls when I had questions so again I don't feel they are disorganized, I just think they are very busy making schedules for 60 students getting reading to come in, probably 60 students getting ready to graduate April 24th, Hoorah to them!!! and still dealing with IKE issues.

Good Luck everyone and see you at orientation May 1.

Thanks AggieQT for all your support you have given those that have applied to UTMB. I can tell you love UTMB with all your heart. Congratulations on your graduation April 24th.

Does anyone know if they have site that you can buy books from previous UTMB nursing students?

Yeah, I'm excited we have all the information now! I still need to get in touch with financial aid, and make sure everything goes through. I'm not sure about what software we need for the pda.

Debra, I ordered my books from amazon.com. I am not sure if there is a place where you can order books from previous students. I know at the community college they have bulletins where we could post books we wanted to sell.

Hey Bazooka,

Did you see the prices of the books at the UTMB bookstore? It totaled around $700+ so I printed out each price and I guess I'll compare to what I can get with Amazon and see if its a savings by the time you pay shipping. I also read that wait until you get your UTMB badge so you get a discount on top of that.

As far as the PDA software. The website that shows the various PDA's that you can purchase through the school had a memory card that has all the program on it already that you can purchase for $278(?) I was told that the PDA with software would run about $600 so that makes sense. the IPOD touch was $378 and add $278 for software so thats around $600. I was told that at orientation you can place orders for alot of this stuff so I just figured I would wait. Of course, I'm always leary of waiting until the last minute. I'll try to at least get my books and see what happens at orientation.

Maybe we can get AggieQT to reply so we know for sure.

I am very excited. Just need to figure out the shuttle parking stuff so when I get there at 7:00 am I'm not freaking out because I'm lost.

I already have the Porth Pathophysiology book (except mine is the 6th edition...not the 8th), so I will ask them about it later. At amazon my total was $370 for all the other books (including shipping). As long as I don't have issues with them, then I think it's a good deal. I don't want to endorse them because I have never had an experience with them before, so it's hit or miss. On the orientation email they said to bring the pda with us to orientation with the appropriate software, so I'm probably going to call them about the software (after I get my pda in the mail). I'm a little paranoid about the whole shuttle thing at 7am too. ugh.

Konnichiwa Everyone! (Hello in Japanese)

For those who still needs to order their books-- there's this website that i go to.. addall.com... all u have to do is type the name of the book or enter in the ISBN number.. and it will list the cheapest price from all these different websites. I think all the books that i bought was around $400... so that's better than $700.

That would be sooo awesome if there's a website where previous UTMB students can sell their books to us. That would help us out sooo much! All this spending.. getting books and a PDA... this n that.. is freaking me out a bit... haha.. anyone feeling the same?

well i hope everyone is doing well. Wow-- May 1st is just around the corner! See you guys soon! =)

Thuy (sounds like twee)

It's hard to be spending this kind of money after I just quit my job to be in the program...

I got lucky the medsurg book UTMB is using will be the same one I am using now. That set was around 250. They didn't give me credit for my nursing fundamentals but they did give me credit for health assessment. Less money for books. I need all the help I can get too. I quit my job after 11 years to do this. I am excited.
