UTMB Summer '09 Applicants

Published

I'm wondering who applied for the UTMB Summer 2009 semester, and if they have received any news from UTMB. My status says "pending", and all my information was received. I don't know how big the applicant pool is considering the hurricane. I haven't seen any news on here about UTMB recently, so anything is appreciated. Thanks.

Hey everyone in the summer 2009 program.

I just spoke to Bonnie Webster at UTMB regarding PDA's and software. She said she changed out a few software requirements and the new changes were up by noon today. I printed out the list this morning but it was still the old list of software. There are eight different software programs you need for your PDA. You simply buy them online and hook up your PDA device to your computer and download the software onto your PDA device. She told me if anyone has questions regarding the PDA's or software to email her at [email protected]. She did say not to worry if you already purchased software because the company gives 30 day return or exchange.

She told me that the books you really need to start out with from day one are Professional Nursing by Chitty, Physical Examination & Health Assess by Jarvis, Pharmacology for Nursing Care by Lehne and Patho Concepts by Porth. (These are all listed on the book list) She said the others you wouldn't need until mid June. I asked her if other editions of the books listed would work and she said you didn't want to do that because the material they review and test go in order of the edition posted. Also she said make sure you get CD with books that come with CD's. Sometimes when you purchase used they don't have CD's in them.

Hope this helps. She was very nice and said be sure and tell everyone to email me with any questions that she would be happy to help in any way possible.

Hey Toady123,

Is the software listed under the link at the SON homepage "PDA discounts"? That is where I saw all of the skyscape downloads.

Yes that's the website she took me to and said these are the different softwares you will need to download on your PDA. Should be eight of them.

Also I just got off the phone with the UTMB bookstore and I'm concerned about some the the books we need to get. On the list two titles say PKG so that means its not just the book. So I called and she said its a package that the publisher puts together just for the school only and they can't be sold separately. So I ask her to tell me what is sold with the book for Fundamentals of Nursing: Art & Science and she said its videos. So I think I will buy part of my books from the bookstore just because there are three of them that will be risky getting from Amazon or other sources.

I didn't call the bookstore, so I wasn't sure what the PKG meant...

I did purchase a study guide, but I guess we don't need that book until June anyways. If there i a problem with what I got, then I can always send it back. I might be ok without the videos (?). Sometimes there are extra things in packages that aren't absolutely necessary. I am going to wait until class starts before I make a decision on what to do about my 6th edition Patho book. The good thing is that we will be using these books throughout the entire program. I think there are only a couple more we need to get before we graduate. I did want to get some books before class starts so that I have a chance to look through them. I think that is why they posted a book list.

Wow.. i just noticed that the health assessment book that is required is the one I used at san jac. My wife went through the coorifice and they used the 4th edition. I was worried that I would miss something and ended up buying the 5th edition. Long story short. They are the same thing. They added 1 new chapter and moved the chapters around. Same pictures and everything. The pkg that they are referring to is that the book comes packaged with a student laboratory manual for your lab. Our package did not include a pocket companion, but it was a really good thing to have. I bought it at Majors bookstore in the med center ISBN# 978-1-4160-3854-2. It was not a requirement but a really good book to have when doing clinicals instead of toating a big book around. When I pull up the isbn# given for the pkg it includes the pocket companion the book itself and the lab manual. Since I don't have to go through that class again I am willing to sell my book (cd included and in like-new condition) for $70.00. The isbn for the lab manual is:978-1-4160-3853-5. I would definitely buy that one new because we had to tear out the assessement pages and turn them in. Looks like barnes and nobles has them in stock. I still have the 4th edition that I can look at if I need something. The ISBN for the 5th edition book is 978-1-4160-3243-4. Hope that helps. That class was a booger, but important. lol! Heck for that matter I can even throw in a little surprise token of appreciation that might be helpful;). The medsurg book is the same too.. but I'm going to need that one.

Hey Everyone!! I just wanted to let you all know that I got a call from UTMB and they asked me if I still wanted to attend for the Summer! I said yes and they sent me some emails regarding orientation and the PDA. However, I didn't receive anything for Financial Aid. I still need to buy books, the PDA and send out Financial Aid information. I also need to clear my schedule for Friday. I am in a real panic. If anyone could help me out by sending me the information that they received from the school, it would really help.

Also, do you guys know if we need the books by orientation? Because I am not sure if that is possible.

Thanks so much for all you guys' help!

Have you talk to any one about you're dilemma?
