UTMB Summer '09 Applicants

Published

I'm wondering who applied for the UTMB Summer 2009 semester, and if they have received any news from UTMB. My status says "pending", and all my information was received. I don't know how big the applicant pool is considering the hurricane. I haven't seen any news on here about UTMB recently, so anything is appreciated. Thanks.

My interview is at 11:30.

I had a friend get into the UT-Houston program, but after the first semester he considered dropping out. I don't know if he did or not, but I have heard a lot of good things about UTMB. My A&P teacher is a Gynocologist, and she graduated from UTMB. She is the one who recommended that I take patho for the UTMB program, and encouraged me to go for my BSN. Even though I made a "B" in A&P 1 and 2, I learned a lot from those classes. She is very detailed in her teaching, and I'm glad that I had that opportunity. I heard that UTMB treats their students very well. I like being treated like a person, not a number.

My interview is at 2:30. I live on the north side of houston (way up north), and wanted to give myself time. Traffic is so unpredictable.

Have you already taken Patho? I'm taking it online at SanJac.

I took in the fall 2008 at lonestar college. I made an "A" so that was exciting

Hey I just got a reply to the email I sent ***** ******* this morning. she said confirmations for interviews will go out Monday.

I hope to see you guys there.... my interview is at 10:45 am.......and I hvnt received the e-mail for room number either, hopefully they will be out on monday. I am really excited, Good Luck gys :D

I just wanted to wish all of you that have interviews good luck! If they are interviewing you, that means they are really interested in you. The interview is so that they can make sure that nursing is what you really want to do (that it isn't just your backup plan) and that you have integrity... they also look for people who are enthusiastic not only about being a nurse but about being a student at UTMB... get plenty of sleep the night before.... DRESS PROFESSIONALLY (seriously there are people who don't- ugh) and go in there with a smile!

As far as driving from north houston (I live in the Humble/Kingwood area) and I leave at least 2 hours before class starts to get there on time- I take the beltway around to 45.. but there is major traffic around Nasa Road 1 and Im not sure for how long, but the freeway is closed around there... so please give yourself extra time so that you arent late...

again, good luck to you all!

Jezziemis-- since ur already in the prgm at UTMB.. can u give us some insights abt the school n classes? Do you like it?!

I heard that a lot of the classes are on-line, so I am debating whether or not I should move. Do students attend regular classes more than once a week? If so, then I will def. move. If not, I think it would save $$ for me to commute once a week or so.....

Of course, this all depends on whether or not I get accepted. Hopefully......I will be a nurse soon!!

So far my experience with UTMB and their SON has been positive. Most of our instructors are helpful and lecture on the material effectively. But it's important to put in your personal effort by coming prepared to class and studying after class.

When I'm not studying, our on campus gym is an excellent way to stay in shape and relieve some stress. We have intramural sports (basketball, softball, volleyball, etc.) and other campus parties/events that allow you to interact with students from all four schools. For Mardi Gras, UTMB's Graduate school of biomedical sciences sponsored a crawfish boil for all students.

Also, we have a 24 hour student center. This area is great for those "all nighters" and there are game rooms to play PS III, X-Box, or Game Cube. The student center has a library of hundres of games.

As you can see, we have a balance of hard work/studying and fun.

Many of the classes are online for the BaccII program but NOT the generic BSN program... you will be down on the island at least 2 days a week for lecture- more if your clinicals are on the island... I choose to live off the island because I am married and my husband works at 290 and the Beltway in northwest Houston (and it would be entirely UNFAIR for us to live on the island)

And yes I like being a student... I am really glad that I chose to go to UTMB... it was a meant to be kinda thing... I have really excelled here as a student and met some fabulous people (DMDTX includid *wink*) I have also met some amazing professors who I actually now consider my friends... I have had professors call me at home because they haven't seen me in a while and wanted to know how I was doing. We are a family at UTMB and once you are accepted in, they aren't going to let you fail out... they will do everything in their power to help you... just a few weeks ago some of the students were really having issues with some concepts and one of our professors sent out emails saying she was willing to meet people on the weekend at Barnes and Noble to go over and give more one on one instruction.... how many professors do you know like that?

Now is UTMB perfect? In no way is ANY institution perfect. One of the MAIN things I have heard from students as far as complaints is the admissions process... the slowness or enrollment services "losing" paperwork etc. You just have to keep in mind that enrollment services is there for all 4 schools and deals with thousands upon thousands of applications every year, plus current students and financial aid and all that jazz... they are humans and mistakes do happen, and things take time... just follow up on your application and all will be well...

Also, please please please be aware that when you do get accepted, that this isn't like the school you have attended before. UTMB is a PROFESSIONAL school... not a normal college (junior college or university)... we are held to a higher standard as far as our conduct, attitude and academic abilities... you aren't going to get spoon fed the materials... you are expected to be assertive in your learning and seek out opportunities to learn... dont go to class and expect them to teach you the material... you teach yourself the theory and such at home and go to class for clarification and application of the material to specific case studies and real world sernarios... if you go into it KNOWING how it is suppose to be then you will excell and enjoy your time at utmb.... really I love my school and am proud to very soon be an alumni (april 24th couldn't come soon enough!)

UTMB School of nursing was the first nursing school in Texas, and until last year had the highest NCLEX pass rate in the state (we hope to get our #1 status back again this year) and not only were we #1 but we also have one of the highest graduation rates in the state as well... you hear those horror stories from other schools how on day one they say look to your left and right, one of you wont be here in the end- this isn't so with UTMB... they take care of their own and wont let you drown... they have to be doing something right to get the scores they have been getting....

I could go on and on about my school as I really do love it, and I hope you all one day will too (because I just know you will be accepted *wink*) If you have any more questions, feel free to send them my way :)
