UTMB Fall 2011 Applicants

Published

Hi everyone! Just thought I'd start a thread for those who are applying to UTMB for Fall 2011. There are some really great (and long!) threads out there for Spring 2011 and earlier...but as I'm sure y'all know, the application process can change from cycle to cycle, plus it's just nice to have a new thread for us. :) So feel free to post questions, comments, or anything related to applications!

I'm applying as a second-degree student to UTMB, UTHSC, TWU (Houston), UT Arlington and A&M, plus maybe the new Texas State program. Whew! I keep hearing great things about UTMB so that might be my #1....

A question to start us off: so we can now use either the centralized NursingCAS application, or the application through UTMB, right? :uhoh3: What are you all going to do? I'm thinking of just doing UTMB's direct application....if you do NursingCAS, I think you'll have to do a supplemental UTMB application+fee anyway, so you might as well just do it all once...thoughts?

For those anxiously waiting... I had to ask a question today regarding some admission stuff and this is the reply I received:

It can’t be completed until I send the BON names, I won’t be sending until we are done with our admissions which won’t be until end of this month

Bold part my emphasis.

Pretty much what Chaos said - just be honest. My interviewer thanked me for that.

Good Luck!

good luck on yall's interviews! i agree with Chaos and Punkydoodles, but another word of advice: BE CONFIDENT as well! i was nervous during my interview because this school was my first choice. my interviewer sensed that i was nervous, so i didn't get an acceptance right away. i had to go back for a second interview before getting accepted.

but yea, odds seem to be pretty good..just prepared and you'll be fine :)

Hi punky, how long was it until you got your acceptance email after your interview?

thanks chaos0058 and punkydoodles . i am looking forward to the future. see y'all on monday.

I also have an interview on Monday, best of luck to everyone!

I talked to my friend that goes to UTMB currently and she said the questions were pretty standard. One question that stuck out to her was they asked what her back up plans were. She also said that her interviewer didn't have any of her information, so be prepared to answer questions about your academic past (bring unofficial transcripts in case!). Have some questions prepared to show forethought and dress nice ! :)

My sister went to school at UTHSC and she said that one question they asked was how she was going to plan financially, which if you're not prepared, a question like that could throw you for a loop.

I've also seen threads that say you get acceptance within a week.

Hope this was helpful, I'll see some of you next Monday!

Hi Everyone!

I am getting ready to submit my application for Spring of 2011, and I'm SO glad I found this thread!

I have a couple of questions and/or requests for suggestions:

1. Can anyone give pointers on the personal statement? My main point on this statement is that I have a son with very severe special needs, and so from experience I know how valuable my nurses are, and how much they help me on a daily basis. I was going to talk about this and talk about my experience with him (30+ surgeries, trach, GJ tube, VP shunt, etc.), does this sound like what I should say?

2. I need advice pertaining to whether I should count on getting into a BSN program or go ahead and get into the RN program I've applied to instead. I have a 3.5 overall, with only one "C" in Statistics. I made 74.7% on the HESI V, and I'm transferring with honors. I have an application in at Lee College here in Baytown, which I suspect I have an excellent chance of getting accepted. If I am accepted I will start this Fall. I am putting in three different applications to BSN programs here in Houston, all for which I need only 2 more pre-reqs, which I can do this fall instead of joining the RN program.

So that's my question: Should I continue to take the 2 pre-reqs that I need to be accepted into the BSN program for the following Spring, or should I take the acceptance to the RN program for this fall and just put off my BSN until I graduate RN?

I really would love to continue with my BSN because that is my goal anyways, I just wonder if I would have a better chance of getting into a BSN program going RN-BSN rather than going straight BSN.

Oohh gosh!

3. What have you heard about getting into a BSN program as far as difficulty, how many qualified applicants versus slots available, competition, etc.?

Thanks so much!

Hi punky, how long was it until you got your acceptance email after your interview?

The next day. I was very honest with my interviewer and told her that I had another acceptance that had a deadline that same week, but UTMB was my 1st choice. I know they voted just a few hours after our interview round. It was two weeks before I got my letter in the mail.

hi everyone!

i am getting ready to submit my application for spring of 2011, and i'm so glad i found this thread!

i have a couple of questions and/or requests for suggestions:

1. can anyone give pointers on the personal statement? my main point on this statement is that i have a son with very severe special needs, and so from experience i know how valuable my nurses are, and how much they help me on a daily basis. i was going to talk about this and talk about my experience with him (30+ surgeries, trach, gj tube, vp shunt, etc.), does this sound like what i should say?

i think that is fine to talk about - they want to know why you want to be a nurse. i talked about my medical experience and tied in some grade explanation as well. the personal statement can truly help, if it weren't for mine, i never would have received an interview - since admissions goofed on my transcripts. my essay made them want to take a second look and bring me in to talk. it was then, that we discovered the error that would have kept me out!! (they had my gpa as 2.1 when i have a 3.8)

2. i need advice pertaining to whether i should count on getting into a bsn program or go ahead and get into the rn program i've applied to instead. i have a 3.5 overall, with only one "c" in statistics. i made 74.7% on the hesi v, and i'm transferring with honors. i have an application in at lee college here in baytown, which i suspect i have an excellent chance of getting accepted. if i am accepted i will start this fall. i am putting in three different applications to bsn programs here in houston, all for which i need only 2 more pre-reqs, which i can do this fall instead of joining the rn program.

i was in a similar situation, only i applied for the bsn and rn programs at the same time. and since i was accepted to both, i chose to go with bsn. why not just go one semester longer and get the bsn? but for me, i was done with all prereqs. my thinking was why risk applying to a rn-bsn program and not get in when i've already been accepted to the bsn to begin with?? you have to go with your gut here, but if you *don't* get in to lee, then yes! just finish the 2 pre-reqs (what are you missing??) and try for bsn!!!! (but even when you apply to bsn programs, i'd still apply to rn programs as well) adn is better than nothing!!

so that's my question: should i continue to take the 2 pre-reqs that i need to be accepted into the bsn program for the following spring, or should i take the acceptance to the rn program for this fall and just put off my bsn until i graduate rn?

that's a tough choice - i had to think long and hard about my decision. if you just do rn now, you may end up working for an employer that pays for your rn-bsn. where i work pays $3600 per year for school. so that's another thing to think about. if you're accepted to the rn, i'd almost take it and run. and here's why?? do you really want to risk that spot for a bsn program that you may or may not get into?? why not just get nurse now and then work on your bsn part??

i really would love to continue with my bsn because that is my goal anyways, i just wonder if i would have a better chance of getting into a bsn program going rn-bsn rather than going straight bsn.

oohh gosh!

3. what have you heard about getting into bsn program as far as difficulty, how many qualified applicants versus slots available, competition, etc.?

i can't speak for other programs, since i only applied for utmb, but if you read through this entire thread, you can quickly see that the admissions process is nothing but frustrating!! it really all depends on the applicant pool for that particular semester. i can't speak for everyone, but i had a 3.8 over all gpa with a 2.9 in sciences. i made a 75 on my teas. and i have an entire semester of f's (5 classes, 3 of those being what they considered core nursing classes) and i got it. but, i'm already an lvn, have an associates in biology, was a military medic for 8 years, and i truly believe that is what helped pull me past that bad, bad semester! there are some posters on here, who have much better grades than me and still haven't heard a thing.

thanks so much!

good luck!!!
