hello all,
guess i'll get our thread started. i've watched these over the last few semesters, and it's a great way to share information and get to know each other.
i applied earlier this month, and got an e-mail this evening letting me know that i am eligible regarding my prerequisites. i was surprised to get something back so quickly since the deadline is july 1. anyway, that's the first step in the process...a long, long process. :) hopefully, there will be plenty of us on here to keep each other company.
look forward to getting through this process with you.
Tori,
They are not silly questions. You do not the vaccine if you have had chicken pox, and you have your lab results to show the antibodies. I am not a lab tech so I don't know exactly it is they look for, but anyway I had chicken pox and they know that from my lab results. So check with your primary care Dr. to be sure, but you don't want extra shots if you don't need them.
I am not a fan of live virus vaccines unless I need them. :)
Hope this helped.

Tori: I had some of the same issues. Was referred to the campus health clinis for more definitive answers. Some of the info on vaccinations was conflicting, so I will be looking for clarification next week. We are about the same age, so what brought you into nursing? What kind of long term goal are you looking at, if you don't mind me asking?
Just some random info for those that applied to the traditional program track.
This is the first semester that UTHSCSA is doing this program (went from generic to traditional). We are more Blackboard geared. In one class you will have to teach yourself (no classes ) for a couple of weeks. As for the books, there are over 12 books that we have to purchase (some are little books) and they changed it from last semester. Yes everyone should look for their books online cause it would have been over $1,400 for books alone at the bookstore on campus (you have to purchase a book sold only on campus at bookstore). I saved half the amount by buying on craigslist, ebay, half, and amazon.
Feel free to email my account for other questions. Hope to meet ya'll next semester : )
Vaccinations-get the hep series done asap.
CPR-make sure its for the professional
Fingerprinting-get it done asap; just in case it doesn't get processed on time (i had to fax a copy of the letter the company sends you saying youre clear
Open House/Orientation-Open House is not mandatory. Orientation is mandatory (our orientation lasted 3 days) and you must go all days.
Books- If you interested in seeing the books that I am currently using just leave me a message and I can email you the list. Don't worry to much about buying already cause the school can change the edition/book so i would hold off until you can see the books on http://uthscsa.bncollege.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/BNCBHomePage?storeId=39552&catalogId=10001 under the Spring 2011 tab.
Scrubs-top scrub is purchased from school, the black scrubs can also but you can get any kind you want (you use the orange scrub for clincials at hospitals rounds and the next day laboratory clinic). On fridays, i have another lab we we can get any scrub type or color.
Hi All
I am not going to worry about the things I can't control, like my email and badge number. UTHSC has been doing these classes for quite awhile, they will do their part and if they don't, I do not think they will penalize us for their error. I am just going to get my immunizations, CPR, background check etc. That is what I will be concentrating on.
So, about the CPR thing, where and how much? Suggestions will be appreciated. I was told by a nurse who shops where I work that Mastertrain is the place to go, it is near the Magic Time Machine. Someone suggested I make sure it is not a refresher course, so I will check that out this week. Their cost is 45.00 and they do classes M-Sat at noon. But since it is only a half day class it may be a refresher class.
Babster: I would love to tell you how I ended up as a nursing student, but I am pretty bogged down right now. Give me a few weeks and I will be happy to write out my story. Maybe lunch?
It might be fun for those of us on this thread to get together one day for lunch or something. Just to get to know each other, or we can maybe plan a potluck for the orientation. Don't know how the thing is scheduled, but if they don't feed us, we could all feed each other and have a chance to get to know each other.
Just some thoughts,
Tori

hi
I found the answer to one of my questions. One to two months after the last injection, you can get a titer for the hep b.
I will try to quit asking silly questions. I think it is just nerves. i can not believe I am so close to achieving my goal.
