UTHSCSA Fall 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I have applied to UTHSCSA and UIW Fall 2018... is there anyone else who is applying or has sent in their apps?? What are your stats?

Hey, guys! Just applied to UT as well

My gpas aren't the greatest, so I'm a bit nervous

Math&science I think is a 3.3/ overall 3.45/ TEAS 90.7

Your TEAS is great!

Itsthatjengirl, did you have to purchase a laptop at UTHSCSA?

Yes, it's a requirement - you use them ALL the time though. We got our financial aid disbursements a day or two before we had to pay for them, so you can make sure that you accept enough of the financial aide to cover it. We had I think four choices - two different Dell laptops, and two MacBooks.

I had a question, if y'all have an answer, for cumulative GPA do they count all the classes you ever took or do they only count the course requirements? I took a bunch of nonsense classes and classes that have nothing to do with my major/ don't count toward my major when I was still deciding on what to major on. So will those classes count in my cumulative GPA? That's why I say 3.3 because I'm counting all the classes I ever took :/

How is the program so far? The pace, the professors, the workload... also, how does the vaccination process work, I'm still confused about that? Thank you so much for making yourself available to us applicants, your input is so appreciated!!

The program is great so far. I feel really supported by the faculty and students. There are lots of things in place to help you navigate everything. They have free counseling services, time management guidance, etc.

So far my professors are great!

I'm not going to sugar coat it - the workload is heavy. You take four classes - two of those classes also have lab, and then you also have clinical. It's a lot of stuff to keep track of and learn. It's not so much that you have stuff to turn in, but the expectation is that you read and learn before class, and class time is for review. Every teacher provides you with objectives, readings, ATI modules and modules from another program. Being organized is helpful and so is leaning on your clinical group. It's a lot of info, too - but that's fun, IMO :)

The vaccination process - you need to get them done sooner rather than later. When you're accepted, you get an email packet and one of the forms is a proof of vaccination. It needs to be filled out by a healthcare provider. The one thing I didn't know going into it was that you need two TB tests. If you don't have insurance, you might be able to get low-cost vaccines at the student health clinic, I'm not sure about that though. Do you have any specific questions about which ones you need?

It's all classes you've ever taken. Even developmental ones.

Thank you! Dang, I wish I knew what I wanted to do right away, that way I wouldn't have taken all those nonsense classes :/

Ahh, I see!

Regarding the vaccination, I was just wondering if I had to start them early, or if I could wait until I know for sure I've been accepted and will be attending to start them?

I was also wondering about tuition, I'm trying to compare COA with other schools, but idk if the breakdown they have on the site is an accurate indication. Could you give me a breakdown on the cost per semester (approx.) including all the "extra" stuff, like parking, for example?

I'm sorry for bombarding you with questions!! Haha I'm just trying to get an idea of everything. Again, thank you so much for all the input you're giving, it's such a huge help!

No problem! I was full of questions before I was accepted, too.

The first semester is your most expensive. Tuition with fees and all is around $5k. You have to buy the computer (about $2k), Shadow Health (a digital clinical thing) for $100 and the ATI package, which is $800. Then there are scrubs, shoes, stethoscope, etc. I'd aim for $10k in financial aid if I could do it over again. There are scholarships, too - but those aren't disbursed until after school has started.

The other semesters should be around $5k each, I *think*.

When I called them they said cumulative was every class ever taken, withdraws/failures are factored in. Math and science GPA is only the required courses that are math and science. I took Trigonometry in 2011 and failed it and it is still being factored into my cumulative GPA which brought it down to a 3.55. If you look at your app through nursing cas it will tell you exactly what your cumulative GPA is.

Hello ladies, I am pretty nervous too! Just submitted my application this past weekend. Teas 85.3 (did the worst on the english part lol). Math/Science GPA 3.63 and overall 3.54 for my Bachelor's. Finishing my Masters in Biology this summer. Hoping to get into the program this fall at UTHSCSA. Hope what I have is good enough to do it!

Hello! I too have been freaking out! My overall and math/science gpa is 3.8 but I only got a 73 on my TEAS. I have been devastated since then and really scared I won't get in anywhere. I applied with UT and TLU as a backup plan. Fingers crossed for all of us!

Hi Jen! How was the first semester ?

Also I know I sent my TEAS transcript and received a verification email from ATI but should I call the school too to assure they got it?
