Anybody applied to the fall 2010 semester? I just received an invite to take the TEAS!
I was wondering of those who have been offered financial aid, was the offer enough to cover the costs of attending school? Or are many having to take out loans?
Make sure you send in your final transcript or you will be counted as a freshman for financial aid. I can't speak for others but the financial aid I received my first semester covered most if not all of my tuition. I had to take out a loan for books/housing. My EFC was 0.
For this 2nd semester I received more aid which will likely cover all my tuition and book costs (assuming the recent tuition increase by the UT Board of Regents doesn't mess that up).
The cost of tuition with my own insurance for the first semester was about $2900 at 14 hours. I believe you'll be taking at least 1 more hour. The recent tuition increase passed by the UT Board of Regents increases the costs by about 5-10% depending on the campus. Hopefully tuition costs will remain about the same.
The largest issue is the costs of books. There are a ton of them and for my semester 1st semester it would've been well over $1000 to get them all at the bookstore. I highly recommend purchasing your books through Amazon, Chegg, Craigslist, Facebook, or international bookstores.
You can search for your books here - Welcome to UT Health Science Center San AntonioBookstore
But you won't need all the books....
Some teachers will tell you what you really need some will even tell you that you can use the old edition...
Talk to a student a semester above you and they can usually tell you which one they used and which one's not to buy.......
I honestly only used 3-4 books throughout Nursing school... but thats me...
for financial aid, all my tution is paid for for both semesters. I will have a little left over each semester for like 1 or 2 books but i will have to take out a loan for transportation and books. I applied to the scholarship through the nursing department and I hope I get something. My EFC is 0, too.
For those nursing students already in the program, do you suggest i purchase the books before class starts or wait on the first class and see what books they want us to use?

Get them ahead of time to snatch the best deals online. Like Aznsexy said, you won't need most of them. Of the 20+ books for 1st semester I used Fundamentals, nursing diagnosis, and bates physical exam. I bought the clinical calculations book and never even opened it. It's still in it's shrink wrap. There's a bunch of mini-books they ask for like the Texas Nursing Practice Act which is available for free online. I didn't buy the Smith book or whatever for Pharmacology. Even with the books I did get it was very expensive. If I could go back I would've probably bought previous editions.
Note that you'll be the first semester to have a different curriculum than we had, so I'm not sure how that will affect things.
To the previous students, I have a question.
As far as computers go...what did y'all use? I'm thinking about getting a MAC, but the school of nursing is wanting a screen size of 15 inches or above and a 15 inch MAC can cost up to $2,000 (with everything).
They say you need a 15 inch screen because of all the programs you'll be using to fill out charts and whatnot. Is this true? Or is it still possible to go with a smaller screen size and be okay?

Any computer is fine. The only program you use is blackboard which may actually cause problems if you use Macs or IE. Any PC from the last 4 years with Firefox will suffice.
What? Computers are required now?
Smiley - I never used any of the CD/DVDs.....
it's really all up to how you study... (I only really used 4-5 books in nursing school and I rarely read them...)
So it's really up to if you read everything and do everything (b/c i know a lot of people that did that also)
past/current students= how is the VA hospital? did you like it? just trying to figure out if i select this over st. luke?
I have heard bad things about the practices at the VA, particularly sanitation. However, Ms. Ford is most likely the clinical instructor if you go to the VA and she is an incredible instructor. You will learn a lot from her.
