Hi, I was just wondering if you could estimate what the total cost of your first year was. This means tuition, fees, housing, miscellaneous expenses, etc. Thanks for all of your responses, they've been really helpful.
Thanks for all of your responses, they've been really helpful.
Tuition and fees - 2900 (3300 this 2nd semester) Will be more if you aren't providing your own insurance!
Housing - 2500 (500 a month)
Books - 400 (1400 if you were to buy everything they ask at the bookstore)
Food - 100 a week? I like food
Toilet Paper - 20$ a month. Charmin ultra. Because your bottom deserves the best
Scrubs - 55$. The UTHSCSA scrubs are 30$ if you buy the top and bottom from the school. You could get the bottoms from any scrub shop for cheaper, you have to buy the top from the school though since it has the logo and it's required for the hospital. For labs you can wear any scrubs.
Pen light - 2$ at bookstore. Get the white ones. They have a pupil measurer and brighter light. Buy a couple. They tend to vanish as easily as a regular pens do. They also make great flashlights when the power goes out.
Watch - 15$. Required for clinicals
Sharpie - 1$ Infinitely useful
Stethoscope - 25$ Which is on the low side both in price and quality. You pay for what you get. If you have hearing issues, you might want to splurge, but a cheap one will get you by. I recommend getting a Littmann. I recommend trying this site. Stethoscopes & Nurse Kits or Amazon. The stores around the medical center tend to charge a lot.
Bandage scissors - 10$ I paid too much...These are good for taking off bandages and cutting bloody shirts off patients
All black tennis shoes - 50$ They are required for clinicals.
School Id - 10$ (14$ if you buy a parking permit. Just another way to scam you)
Parking permit - I took the VIA. I think it's between 60-100$ depending on which Lot/Zone you get. Alternatively you can park several streets down for free. Lot 7 is like a 20 min walk and the shuttles come every 30 minutes, so it might seem like a waste to pay for parking anyway.
regular school supplies - 25$
You might also want to invest in gladware and other storage stuff to bring lunch and snacks with you to school. You will not be able to sit through a 3 hour lecture without a snack! Eating at the cafeteria is extremely overpriced and mediocre. Lots of cute asians to stare at in the cafeteria though :redbeathe
I think that's everything

has anyone been notified for a scholarship (financial aid)?
really enjoyed your remarks about the cute asians (hopefully there will be some tall ones) lol
tall, short, dorky, muscly. every flavor under the sun
students, notifications for fall 2010 scholarship awards will go out on wednesday, august 25th. because some scholarships require recipients to be full-time, we must know your enrollment status to award these scholarships. unfortunately, we cannot verify your enrollment until registration ends on tuesday, august 17th. as you can see, once we verify enrollments, we will work as quickly as possible to notify recipients of these awards. please be aware, however, new student orientation will also be taking place wednesday, august 18th through friday, august 20th so our office will be busier than usual and may be delayed in sending this information. also, please be aware that some of you who receive scholarships may not be eligible to have the award money credited directly to your account. i'm explaining this so no one "counts" on receiving the money and then finds out it was instead credited to student loan balances. to illustrate this, imagine the following scenario. a nursing student completes their fafsa for the 2010/2011 school year, and it calculated an "unmet need" of $13,000. the nursing student may receive financial aid, based on need, in the form of grants, scholarships and/or student loans. let's say the student receives a grant in the amount of $2,500 and then takes out student loans in the amount of $10,000. thus, the student can only receive a scholarship or additional loan to be deposited into their personal account (with the exception of private loans), in the amount of $500. $13,000 - $2,500 - $10,000 = $500 unmet need grant student loan new unmet need if the nursing student is awarded a $2,000 scholarship, then $1,500 of it will be applied to your student loan. federal regulations prohibit public institutions from awarding money to students above their need amount if they have student loans. if the nursing student in this scenario had only taken out $8,000 in student loans, then the $2,000 would have been credited to their account since they still have an unmet need of $2,500. $13,000 - $2,500 - $8,000 = $2,500 unmet need grant student loan new unmet need if you have questions, please let me know. i'm sending this email and am here to help so each of you may adequately plan your finances for the upcoming semester. also, if you are awarded a scholarship, you will be required to complete a scholarship information form, sign a nepotism statement and provide a thank you letter to our office by friday, september 3rd. if you fail to meet this deadline, you will not receive the scholarship award money. additionally, it will be expected that you and one guest will attend the son scholarship reception on sunday, september 26, 2010 from 3-5pm. if applicable, you will be responsible for making arrangements with your clinical instructors if the reception conflicts with your clinical hours. finally, as an fyi - san antonio livestock scholarship applications have not yet been sent to us. once we have received them, i will immediately disperse via email. thank you!! best, brandy brandy allred, bs, med, ma academic & student services coordinator school of nursing university of texas health science center room 1.106.3 mail code 7945 7703 floyd curl drive san antonio, tx 78229-3900 (210) 567-5806

$13,000 - $2,500 - $10,000 = $500
unmet need grant student loan new unmet need

okay, i see how the scholarship and student loans works out. Hopefully I get any scholarship, so that way i get to pay back less. Thanks for the information did you get it on the website or from where? Anyways, which semester are you in? Does anyone recommend taking classes during the summer?
It was in my email. You might have one too in your uthscsa email if they've assigned you one. I'm about to start my 2nd semester.
You have to have 3 upper division electives to graduate - 2 in nursing, 1 in any discipline. Nobody bothered to mention any of this till halfway through 1st semester. It'll be less stressful to take electives in the summer, but since you're starting in the Fall, that means there's only one summer between when you start and when you graduate. On top of that the summer electives fill up fast (within minutes of registration opening). You'll likely have to take at least 1 during the school year.

friendlysmile- i sent an email to the school asking if we are required to take classes in the summer or if all necessary classes were incorporated into the new traditional program and this was their response- students in the new traditional track will not be required to attend school during the summer. this new track does not require students to take electives.
hope this helps :)
Whatttt?! That's unfair
Also, my tuition is actually 2900$ again for this 2nd semester. They were charging me for health insurance.
thank you for informing me, yeah i also emailed and they said the exact same thing.
guys, one more month and we will finally get to meet each other in person (in class). Maybe all of us should have a sign with our allnurses username hung around our necks. JK. Lol. But that would be very funny.

I'm so confused on which books to buy! There's a huge list on the bookstore website, however, all the required books total over $1300!
Do we really need all the books? I'm planning on buying online somewhere else...
:lol2:correct me anyone if i'm wrong: but i counted 17 different books that we have to purchase (there were some listed on the bookstore that were listed twice (same isbn)). Did anyone get any more/less books that are REQUIRED? I'm purchasing all my books online to same money, except of course the books that can only be purchased at the campus bookstore.
You need the physical exam book. That was the only book we really used for labs. But they changed the book/author and added more stuff for ya'll so no clue if you need the student lab manual as well.
You can probably get by without the medsurg. It's a difficult read and while it was assigned for several readings I didn't really use it (I would recommend being more studious than I am). You'll need it for second semester though and it's good if you really want to understand bio/physiological processes.
Fundamentals of Nursing is a must.
Nursing Diagnosis is necessary for writing your nursing process papers
You won't need the code of ethics, it's free online somewhere if you really want to see it
The conceptual foundation's book for dittmars class appears to be new. We didn't have it, but your fundamentals class is an hour longer so there is probably more content which may come from this book. Can't make a recommendation on whether or not you'll need it.
NURSING:SCOPE+STAND.OF PRACT. (you will not use this)
NURSING'S SOCIAL POLICY STATEMENT (you will not use this)
FIRST SEMESTER TRADITIONAL >CUSTOM
NURSE,MATH,MEDS-W/CD (All nursing math is dimensional analysis. I bought the math book and never took it out of the wrapping. They will teach you DA if you forgot in class. I don't recommend wasting money on this. If you absolutely feel you need it or are seriously struggling, I'll sell you mine for $20)
NATURAL STANDARD HERB+SUPP.HANDBOOK (This was not a required book for us, but is listed as required for you. I don't know how much you'll need it, but I'm gonna wager that it won't be significant as we didn't even have time to cover all of the drug categories for our tests.)
PHARMACOLOGY F/NURS.CARE-USER GD.+CODE (dunno what this is, not available anywhere but the bookstore)
PHARMACOLOGY F/NURS.CARE-W/CD+USER GDE. (this apparently comes with some sort of access code. I don't know if you'll need it for class. It would be best to wait and ask before buying a used edition. After thinking about this, I believe it to be the same thing as the previous thing I listed, but with CDs included. If that is the case, it would be a waste to purchase this. The CDs are unnecessary.)
SKILLS PERFORMANCE CHECKLISTS:NURSING.. (We had something like this, but ours was only 2$)
MOSBY'S DIAGNOSTIC+LAB.TEST REFERENCE (I never bought or used this. I don't know how the new curriculum will affect this)
MOSBY'S DRUG GDE.F/NURSES-W/CD 2010 (I used the 2008 edition.)
