Hello everyone:D
I have seen various threads for previous applicants that applied to the UT Houston School of Nursing. I was not able to find a thread for UTHSC Fall 2016 applicants so I decided to start one. If a thread already exists, I am sorry. I will also be applying to TWU-Houston and UTMB. I know the process is stressful, so I will try to make it easier. I will be attending the May 22 info session at UT and the May 28 one at TWU. I will be sure to update any information discussed in the sessions for those who are not able to attend. If there are any previous applicants, or current and previous students, I would appreciate if you could join and share your experience in the school as well as your application process.
I look forward to talking to everyone who is going through this nursing journey.:)
Hey guys,
I'm about to start my 2nd semester at UTH SON. I remember being on these message boards before I started school! So if anyone has any questions, fire away. To those who have gotten waitlisted-- I was taken off the waitlist & accepted just 2 weeks before the first semester started!! Same thing happened to my friend too. So don't lose hope :)
- And to those who were not accepted- you ARE good enough. Take it as a sign that this was just not meant to happen in this time, this place, etc. You will succeed! I remember feeling so depressed when I was "rejected" (I took waitlist as a rejection).
I've also lived in Houston for a long time so ask anything you'd like about the program itself, books, supplies, Houston, transportation, etc.
I generally take the bus because I'm lucky enough to live inside the loop and the bus that runs near my house goes into the med center. From the stop in the med center, I walk about 7 min. to school. If I had to take more than 1 bus to get to school, I would probably just drive because IDK if waiting for 2 buses would be worth; sometimes Houston Metro runs pretty slow. However, the rail is pretty reliable. So if my route was: take the bus to the rail, then take the rail to the med center, I would do that.
On days that I don't take the bus (rain, etc) I just drive and park at the public parking garage near the school (Garage 2, $12 a day) because I didn't pay for a school parking pass.
My friend drives and doesn't have a parking pass, so she parks on a side street near student housing & takes the UTH shuttle from the student apartments to the school.
Even if you pay for a parking pass, you will still have to allow extra time to catch the UTH shuttle to the school or walk. The parking areas that people pay for are not next to the school.
For J1 this spring classes were held 3 days a week, Mon Tues Wed. Classes started at either 08:00 or 09:00 depending, and sometimes for tests they would start as early as 07:00. At the beginning of the semester they pass out a sheet for you to indicate what day you PREFER your clinical to be, our choice was either Thurs, Fri, or Sat. So after about 5 weeks, clinicals will start. You have 6 clinicals, 1 a week usually.
Throughout the semester there are random days you'll have to come in or stay late for simulations, special labs, check-offs, etc but they'll let you know in advance.
Of course I can't guarantee that your semester will look just like that but their system seems to work pretty well. Even taking 5 classes this summer for J2, I'll still only be in class for 3 days a week. They will just be longer days than J1.

I just received an email telling me to check my status thinking I was accepted off of the wait list but my status still says incomplete.
