UTHSC Traditional BSN Fall 2016 Applicants

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello everyone:D

I have seen various threads for previous applicants that applied to the UT Houston School of Nursing. I was not able to find a thread for UTHSC Fall 2016 applicants so I decided to start one. If a thread already exists, I am sorry. I will also be applying to TWU-Houston and UTMB. I know the process is stressful, so I will try to make it easier. I will be attending the May 22 info session at UT and the May 28 one at TWU. I will be sure to update any information discussed in the sessions for those who are not able to attend. If there are any previous applicants, or current and previous students, I would appreciate if you could join and share your experience in the school as well as your application process.

I look forward to talking to everyone who is going through this nursing journey.:)

This is what I have discovered so far; buy the patho book but buy the ebook. The books are big and bulky and hard to maneuver. Also buy the fundamentals book for care 1. You will also need the nursing diagnosis handbook and the lab book and pocket guide for health assessment. Other than those books, I have not used any of the others. I have no advice for housing, but as for workload, it is a lot work. You will be taking 4 classes your first semester whereas most other programs are only 2 or 3. The academic coaches will tell you you need to study each class everyday, but I prepare for 1 test at a time and it works out fine. I do work but mostly from home and usually no more than 10 hours a week. I don't think I could handle more than that. Our classes are 3 days a week with 1 clinical day either Thursday, Friday or Saturday. As for cost, my tuition was about $3800 for the first semester, not including books. Books cost about $700. Hope this helps!

What are the requirements for scrubs and shoes? Colors, styles, etc....

When do we get the book lists? supply lists?

any other helpful hints for incoming students?

Scrubs are navy blue, it doesn't matter the style. Shoes for clinicals need to be leather, as for color, it will depend on your clinical instructor. Mine requires white leather. You can wear whatever tennis shoe you want to lab. You will receive an email invite to admitted student day closer to start time and that is when you get your supply and book list. You will be able to purchase everything then, including your black bag that has most of your lab supplies in it, your foley and iv kits. I would suggest shopping around for your stethoscope, you can get the same one cheaper online.

Look into taking the bus if you don't live close. I started out driving and then ended taking the bus, much less stressful. By my 3rd week, I was crying just about everyday. It takes some adjusting, but after the first round of exams, I felt much better and now we only have 6 more weeks until the semester ends. You will survive, just make sure you breathe.

Thank you so much for the info. Its very helpful :)
