UTHSC Summer 2017

Published

Hi everyone, I just wanted to begin a thread for all UT Health SON students who are applying for Summer 2017. I didn't see a thread created for this term yet. I look forward to getting to know all of you as we begin this long journey. Feel free to share anything regarding the application process and/or ask any questions that you may have!

Did they say anything about the number of applicants for the Summer?

The only thing she would say was that summer application isn't as competitive as spring and summer. And the average prereq gpa for this past spring application period was 3.8 and science was 3.75

I believe it's also random selection from 3 categories - fair, good and great gpa and academy history.

iwas waitlisted this past term. Hopefully, they take that in consideration!

They said that they don't take previous wait list into consideration. You just go back into the pool with everyone else.

I know what she said, but it's hard to believe that when they are analyzing those things your overall GPA doesn't get a glance. They should have fun looking at my overall academic history...4 universities and over 160 credit hours spanning the course of 20+ years.

I was just repeating what she stated when it came to academic history for the sake of everyone that wasn't there...

thanks for the sincerity; you just crushed all my dreams.

I understand, and I hope I'm not confusing those that couldn't attend. This was just my own personal observation and line of thinking.

Sorry! Don't shoot the messenger! :bag:

You have reallllly good stats Tesstex so stay positive! They said they had about 1100 apply for spring and you got wait listed and summers less competitive so in my opinion you have a good chance!!!

What do you mean by random selection? Is it like a lottery? Like they divide people up in 3 categories and then randomly choose a certain number of people from all 3? Meaning that some with lower stats will get in, but some with higher ones won't?

I believe they pick people from those 3 categories. They consider all students: fair, average and A's students. They have to consider all students, this is not Harvard or Stanford.

plus not always the "A" student make a great nurse (because there's no such thing as a "perfect " nurse).

Every student gets a chance, as long as they meet the criteria, prerequisites and maybe certain standards, too.

so, yes, I believe is kind of a lottery process!

But this is just my opinion. But what do I know, I am just an ordinary student. :specs:

I had clinical at the school today and saw them setting up for the information session. I'll be honest and say summer is probably the best term to start. You're easiest semester is the first one (even though at the time it feels like you're dying) and the 2nd and 3rd semester are a lot to do in such a short term like summer. So if you get in for the summer you will do your 2nd and 3rd semester during the long semesters of Fall and Spring. Your 4th semester of straight clinicals will be 4 weeks short, but you get the same number of clinical hours as someone doing their 4th semester during a long semester because those hours are set by the TX BON. So you do more shifts a week to offset that.

how long is the 1st summer semester and when does it usually start?

From what I've heard it will start around the 3rd week in May and be 12 weeks.

Its about 12 weeks vs. the normal 16 weeks of a long semester.
