Hello friends!
I'm creating this as a communication board for new students/applicants to talk on about:
A quick intro-- My name is Maira and I've followed previous threads on here and I love how much information you can get from it! (I followed and read ALL of UTHSC Nursing Spring 2016)
I'm applying at UThealth for the nursing pacesetter program for Spring 2017. The application is due by Aug. 15 and I haven't submitted it yet because I haven't taken the HESI! I'm getting anxious about taking it, have any of y'all taken yours yet?!
Also, I've been meaning to stop by the school and see if my pre-reqs meet their requirements. I'm a bit confused on whether they will average 2 scores of the same class or not. For instance, a long time ago I took a English course and got a F (I was careless and young) and now I retook it and got a A. Another thing that I've been wondering about is what exactly the 5 hours of "electives" are-- will they accept a math class for it?
Well I look forward to meeting all of you!!!! Good luck!!!!
While we continue this long wait to find out if we get in, how about getting to know a little about each other?
I am a returning student. I have raised my daughters and now it is my turn to follow my dreams! I have 3 daughters: a 25 year old that is a BSN and works at TCH, a 23 year old that is studying to be a pharmacist at UH, and a 16 year old that attends HSPVA. If I get into UT, I will be graduating with my BSN the same month that she will be graduating from High School!
I have worked with the same company for 26 years. I dont know if I can name names here, but it is the biggest retail store. They have been good to me, but I want more. I want to do something that matters!
I know that I am older than most of you, but I hope to be your equal and work hard with you when we get accepted!!!!
Hey JENMV!!! We have a lot in common!
I was a returning student too! I left high school to help support my dad who was sick. I lost him at 19. I travelled the world, and lived in Europe for 10 years (and picked up 5 languages) before coming back to attend college at 28. I worked as an EMT in Chicago, and had hopes to attend medical school. Unfortunately, fate had other things in store for me. My brother tragically passed.
I received my Bachelor's (with a lot of struggle and a serious dent in my grades), and eventually decided I wasn't ready for med school. Then I moved to Houston, and again became the family caretaker. I brought my mom, who has since suffered 3 strokes, my aunt from Europe, and 2 younger cousins. I have devoted my life to helping others. I had been thinking about Nursing for a long time, but could not make a decision. I joined a philanhropic group last year which required me to do volunteer work at TCH. The moment I stepped my foot in the hospital, it all came back. That night I went home and started, completed, and submitted my applications!!!
Here I am 4 months later. The world won't stop spinning. I love the job I have now, as I have been in engineering for nearly 3 years, but the moment I made the decision to go into nursing, it was like a large weight was lifted off of me. I had been struggling for so long, and suddenly I felt at peace. I think my dad and brother were with me in the decision and I think that's where the calm came from. My mom is really excited too! She said she hasn't seen me this happy since I was doing my clinicals in the trauma bay!
(I'm in my mid 30's now)
I know if you are accepted you will be a great student and a great nurse. Returning students seem to have this undeniable drive in everything and give 110%! Good Luck!
I'm also a returning student! I received an associates degree while still in high school and my first bachelor's degree in Psychology/ Business Administration from UT Austin back in 2013.
I'm 25 and currently work as a Pre-K teacher, but after a few years, I realized that it wasn't for me anymore. I began taking the prerequisite courses for nursing, and I am so glad that I started when I did. I have always found the human body intriguing and to be able to merge that knowledge with my desire to care for others is what ultimately led me to choose nursing as a career.
After getting a BSN, I will work for a few years, and return to school (once again ) to become a CRNA. It will be a long journey, but I am beyond excited about it! I am glad that I have found my calling in life because at one point, I thought I never would.
Good luck jennmv and pappa22v!
Hello everyone!
I am currently a full-time student and have been since Fall 2014. I've always wanted to do something within the medical field, but my first year of college I had no idea what the right occupation would be for me. During summer of 2015 I finally decided that becoming a Nurse was the best path for me! I moved to Houston this past August and I am currently finishing my pre-reqs at UH. This is the only program I applied to for Spring 2017, so fingers crossed I get in!!
I am also looking into the CRNA program after working for a couple of years. Although, I am not 100% this is what I want to do. I am hoping that clinical at the end of our undergraduate experience will help guide me to the right path for graduate school!
I can't wait to grow and develop within this program, not only as a student, but as a person! Nursing for me is a job about compassion and showing love to all of those around, no matter what situation.
Good luck to all applicants! Hope to see everyone in the Spring.
Hi future nurses!
I'm happy to see some other second degree students out there too. I graduated from A&M with a degree in Community Health this past May. I've applied to and been accepted to a couple other nursing schools but UT Health is still my #1 choice.
I know this is jumping the gun a little bit, but if accepted I will be relocating to Houston from Dallas. Will anyone else be in the same boat? Possibly looking for a roommate?
Hope everyone hears good news in the coming weeks!
I also know the area pretty well, and since I just moved into Med Center, a lot of it is depending on your price point, there are great places! Also, remember it sometimes pays a little more to be closer, because you can save money by not using your car. Students and Employees have special lots to use, and they have to pay for their own parking. I live walking distance in a very affordable apartment for the tradeoff. I am also about a block from the Metro Rail, and it is 1 stop to UTHSC. (UTH is literally across the street). UTHSC also offers great student housing, the buildings were built fairly recently and are quite affordable.
Hi everyone! I enjoyed reading about some of your backgrounds. I also have a previous degree and am a more "mature" applicant looking for a new career. I am so anxious and excited to get the results of the application! I need something to motivate me to get through the painfully unexciting prerequisites I am finishing off.
