Hello-
I have just learned about this the online (entire program including pre-req courses) ap bsn program at uta. I read about this on another uta thread but it was not as clear as it was explained today to me. This is similar to the twu weekend bsn program; however, the difference is you will conduct your clinicals at the hospital where you are employed. No matter what position/status where you work (partnered hospital), you can participate in this program at a discounted rate. So far, I believe uta partnered with parkland, baylor and thr but I believe the thr program is different. uta/thr partnership offers full financial support (tuition, fees, and books) by thr for the 2nd bacc bsn program. The ap bsn program only offers you a discount but you would need to use either scholarships or tuition reimbursement from your employer (hospital).
I am so impressed with the fact that the entire program is online and it is estimated to take 18 months to complete (again including all pre-courses). The program is laid out great because you can take all pre-req sciences (except gen chem), psychology courses, stats and other pre-reqs online; your clinicals can be worked out with the clinical partnership manager. Since I work full-time in a non-clinical area, weekends would be so much better for me to participate in my clinicals. I believe the manager will be flexible with me on clinicals b/c we work closely together on a weekly basis.
I can start earlier with this program compared to the twu weekend program. Some pre-req courses are only 5-8 weeks long so you can complete your pre-reqs faster and courses are offered more than traditional program.
I would highly recommend this program for any career changes, who cannot afford to stop working full-time but have the desire to change careers into nursing. :redbeathe Go to www.uta.edu/nursing click on prospective students, click academic partnership, click on academic partnership under bsn program and read more about the opportunity.
Please note: you do not have to work at a hospital to be admitted into this program. Once you are admitted into the junior/senior level of the nursing program, uta will coordinate a clinical site for you at one of their partnership hospitals.
Is there anyone out who have started the ap bsn program either fall 2009 or spring 2010? I would love to hear how things are going in the online courses (whether you just started pre-req courses or you are taking the nursing courses).
I hope this has have been helpful information for those of you who really need flexibility while in the 2nd bsn fast track/accelerator program.
look forward to your response!

Hi! I am starting my prerequisites (for the UTA AP BSN) through UTA AP general courses online. Can anyone who has taken the prereq's through this program inform me on them? The difficulty level, time required per week, etc...I'm going to be working full time while taking 3 8-week courses at a time and want to make sure I'm not biting off more than I can chew. Thanks!
hi amy,
i am currently in patho and pharm online for the ap program. i'm not trying to scare you but pharm is definitely a challenge. i have to put in at least 14 hours per week just on that class. the tests can be hard because they are all case study type questions. so you won't be just giving definitions of what each drug does etc, you have to know how it works in the body etc. patho is a bit easier. it covers a lot of info but it's totally do-able. i just got into the ap program and i start jan 2011 so these classes prepare you a little for the craziness i am about to go through in nursing school.
good luck!
Just a brief comment on UTA's Advisors....YES, they ARE pitiful. I recently enrolled this past Fall and I have had a HORRIBLE time getting my Advisor on the phone to answer my questions or provide me with the needed information to get me on the road to my BSN smoothly. She seems to have no concern with whether or not I succeed. I have found myself on the verge of going to another school however the low program cost and fact that I'm already enrolled is currently over shadowing the lack of advisory support.:-S
I'm currently in the 2nd semester of the AP-BSN program. You will presumably be placed in clinicals based on your location. I'm in the Fort Worth clinical group. I'm associated with the Texas Health Resources (THR) cohort. Last semester, we did our clinicals at Harris Fort Worth downtown. This semester for psych, we were at Millwood Psychiatric Hospital in Arlington. My clinical group just recently completed our Med-surg rotation again at Harris this semester.
It's best if you are employed by the hospital that you are grouped with so that you can take advantage of the tuition reimbursement that they'll offer you. I am an PRN employee and therefore do not qualify for the tuition reimbursement benefit. Also, as an employee, you'll be eligible for book vouchers that will cover the cost of your books each semester. I receive financial aid from UTA that basically covers my tuition (this does include loans, however).
Taking the courses online aren't that bad as long as you keep yourself organized and exercise some strict discipline. Here's a link to the site that we use to access our courseware: University of Texas Arlington Academic Partnerships
Just as a warning, you will also need to sign a contract with the hospital that you are grouped with. I don't know how the other hospitals operate but I know that with THR, you will be required to work for them for 2 full consecutive years as a RN at one of their facilities (I understand that this does not include a graduate nurse (GN) position). If you break this contract, you will owe them $15,000. If there was a way to upload a copy of the contract, I would but am not sure of how to do this. If you don't mind these terms then it should work out for you.
It seems like the program is still working out kinks in terms of being more organized. Hopefully, by the time y'all enroll, the program will be better. I do feel that I have learned a lot so far.
Hope this info has been helpful!
So what ever hospital you're grouped with...you may have to sign a contract? And even if you pay the tuition to go to UT-Arlington and decide not to work for 2 years at the hospital, you will STILL owe $15,000? Is this for every hospital? Because if I go here, I plan to go back to California after I graduate...but don't know about staying for 2 consecutive years, unless I can get a job in the ICU. Thanks for the info.

I can't speak for the other hospitals such as Parkland, BUMC, etc. but I know for a fact that this is the case for THR (Fort Worth, Dallas Presby, Arlington Memorial, etc). So in my case, as I do technically pay my own tuition (albeit largely with the assistance of financial aid), if I don't fulfill the 2-year commitment, I will owe THR $15,000. So to answer your first question, yes. I'm assuming you could ask whichever hospital that you are partnered with specifically about this.

I've just talked to some classmates that are partnered with other hospitals (JPS and MCA) and they were not required to sign any contract. I'm assuming that maybe this is likely only the case with THR. So I guess if you're not partnered with them, you don't have to worry about that.
I've already been admitted to the AP BSN program. I'm currently taking my last prereqs at UTA (pharm, concepts and patho). I'm starting the program this June. I currently work at THR in downtown Fort Worth but I'm not eligible for tuition reimbursement yet as I'm only a PRN employee. I'm trying to transfer out to a part-time position so that I can take advantage of tuition reimbursement. I was also told by my advisor that it's recommended to not work beyond 15 hrs/wk as the program is very intense. Working 20 hrs is ok but you'd be pushing it.
Congrats:yeah:. Today i am starting my first pre req at UTA Ap online bsn program. It is very exciting. I am nervous too.
will i have any clinicals to go? Are there any clinicals in this whole program and how will i do that? online???

FFMedic, Texas Tech Health Sciences Center has a program in your area: http://www.ttuhsc.edu/son/prospective/. The courses are online and the clinicals are at a facility in your area. I really wanted to complete this program as I am a TTU alum. However, I recently moved from Austin, one of the qualifying areas. I am considering driving to Austin to do my clinicals each week. It's about a 2.5 hr drive each way.
Hope this information helps. :)
