UT Austin Alternate Entry 2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hey everyone! I did not see a post for applicants for Ut Austin's Alternate Entry MSN program for 2020, so I started one! I know the application just opened a few days ago but with all everyone balances, I figure why not start now? I am applying for their PMNHP specialty.

I got my interview request today, too!!! I am so excited and relieved! Congratulations to you, as well! I am interviewing on the 19th. I am sure they have interviewed so many talented and qualified applicants (I know there are so many on this forum)! I am hoping I can control my nerves and not be a wreck! LOL

I’m SO excited for you!!! Congratulations! Good luck to everyone interviewing. If you applied to LeaDS, I posted on Thursday 12/5 of my experience and questions asked if you might find them helpful ?

I suspect the interviews for the different programs are structured differently from each other.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom to share regarding the CNS interview? I am nervous, especially after hearing that they will only offer a position to about half the interviewees.

If this group is reflective of the applicants as a whole, it sounds like there will be a super supportive and collaborative cohort! Good luck to everyone interviewing! We got this!

Congratulations!!! Which program are you interviewing for? I interviewed for LeaDS last week and would love to pass on my experience.

I’m interviewing for LeaDS! ?

Awesome! I had to ask since each program is so different and didn't want to tell you the wrong things ? I interviewed with two professors, they started with sharing their background in nursing and at UT. Following that, they went more in-depth into the first foundational year. The questions asked were pretty standard interview questions, with the exception of: why you chose LeaDS, what you plan to do after graduating, and why are you seeking an MSN versus a BSN. Also, they write your answers down while you're talking. Both professors were very warm and welcoming. Which day is your interview?

Hope any of this was helpful!

Congratulations on your interview! I interviewed for LeaDS, but am excited to hear how the CNS interviews go ?

Anyone who has done the CNS interview, would you mind sharing how it went? The type of questions that were asked? Any questions that caught you off guard? This group sounds very supportive and I appreciate any insight! Thank you in advance!

Congrats on the LeaDS interview! How did it go?

Hi,

I haven't received any interview or rejection. I am not sure whether to expect an interview call or rejection. Really worried.??

Hey everyone,

I interviewed for CNS program on Monday morning and let me tell you they were awesome but I was a flustered mess. I did not do well, probably won't get an acceptance based on my answers but I want to help out everyone else who will be interviewing.

Make sure you know exactly why you want to be a nurse and why a master's prepared nurse specifically, rather than a BSN. Also make sure that you know the difference between a CNS and a NP (this what got me). Have a couple stories or situations where you had to handle stressful situations, or "went against a supervisor" (that's what they asked me), and make sure that you have at least 10 questions written down to ask them. Just in case they go over ones you had at the beginning of the interview.

Otherwise you all got this! You're a great group! Good luck!

Thank you for sharing your experience! I interviewed for LeaDS so mine sounds a bit different. I am hopeful for you and try to stay positive. Easier said than done, I’m a wreck over here and have been picking myself apart. I only had time for three questions, were you able to get more in? The 30 minutes went by very quickly and about half of it was them sharing the foundational year and what brought them to nursing.

I am totally picking myself apart. But what I really did was talk about my love for primary care, so she told me to my face that it might not be the program for me. So definitely not a good sign there, but thanks for the positive vibes :).

Mine had about 6-7 questions. She told me that there would be time for me to ask questions after, but then cut it off 5 mins early....so bad signs all around. Im am sure that you did fantastic and got them really engaged with your answers.

Hi!

I also interviewed on Monday for CNS, via Zoom call, and my interview experience basically echoes yours, nurselefteye. I thought that I went in with a lot of passion and experience, but I definitely felt thrown off course because I couldn't define NP vs CNS. I researched them, but I guess when we're not yet in the nursing profession it is hard to talk about the tremendous variety of roles! Especially since I don't see a lot of CNS's around me.

The interview was roughly separated into 2 parts: first part was about what lead you to nursing, to this program/specialty, your goals, your future role, and also how you will succeed in the program. The second part is a bunch of situational questions: I also got the "time you went disagreed with your supervisor" question, as well as a "time that overwhelmed you" and a funny "when do you ask questions?"

Half an hour really goes by fast! I barely had time to ask my questions (but perhaps that's because I rambled too much answering their questions, yikes).

I wish everyone all the best! Although I've been feeling down/disappointed in my performance and doubtful of my prospects, I just hope that we will all end up where we're meant to be. ?
