UT Austin Alternate Entry 2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hey everyone! I did not see a post for applicants for Ut Austin's Alternate Entry MSN program for 2020, so I started one! I know the application just opened a few days ago but with all everyone balances, I figure why not start now? I am applying for their PMNHP specialty.

Alright, I just finished up my LeaDS interview! It went well, although we had some technical issues that cut into our time. They asked:

- Why did I want to be a master's prepared nurse?

- How does masters degree nursing fit into my goals?

- How do I think the moral and ethical responsibilities of a masters prepared nurse differ from other levels of nursing?

- Describe a time you had to ask for help and how you went about it

- Describe a time you were met with a challenge, how you took charge of the situation and how it felt to be a leader in that situation.

The professors were very kind and I know we will all be in great hands going into this program. It was described to me as a 60-hour a week commitment, which I was a little shocked by. I expected it to be at least equivalent to a full time job, but nothing in my research about this program has led me to think it would be that rigorous. So to whoever gets in - best of luck!

I am happy to hear your interview went well! I also interviewed for LeaDS on December 5th and my questions were a bit different, that's interesting. I did have the first two you mentioned. They described it being about a 60-hour work week to me as well, including the time you go home and study/homework/etc. I am trying to now patiently wait for a decision, I hope you hear great news ?

@kbena thank you for posting the questions they asked! Wow 60hours? I didn’t know it was that rigorous ??

@kbena @KB417 best of luck! I hope you both get in! ?

From what I gathered in the information session and the interview, you spend half of your day in the classroom setting, then you go anywhere from Liberty Hill to Kyle (and in-between) for the clinical portion the second half. Then, adding the time you go home and study, do homework, etc., The professor who led the info session I attended stated it was 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

@KB417 Oh yeah it’s basically a full time job! Well I think if you’re focused & committed it won’t feel like such a drag ?

I agree! Three people who are in the program that started this year said it did not feel as rigorous as they expected, but emphasized it's all subjective, of course.

Did anyone else get an email to be considered for the LEADS program? I applied for the CNS program but I got an email to consider the LEADS program!

Nina, same with me! How are you feeling about LEADS?

@peanutbutter5 I'm not sure because I didn't even think about it until now! I wasn't expecting that email at all!!?

Hey everyone,

I did my background check on Monday and the good news is that it took less than 5 minutes. It was odd to complete the background check before the interview, but I think I am interviewing very late compared to most. My interview is tomorrow on campus at 11:30 (interviewing for LeaDS). I was wondering if anyone who has interviewed thus fas has had a chance to ask the professors questions? I have a few questions prepared, but I wanted to know if I would actually get a chance to ask them since I know 30 minutes can go quickly. The nerves are starting to kick in, that's for sure.

Thank you so much to everyone who has shared their experiences thus far. What a great group we have here!

Good luck with your interview tomorrow! I had my LeaDS interview a couple of weeks ago and to be respectful of their time, as I knew interviews were back-to-back, I asked how much time was remaining and it was just three minutes. So that is the time I asked my questions and it was enough for two of them.

Thank you so much! I wrote a lot of questions down to bring in with me so I have them just in case there is time at the end. The nerves are setting in now. Thanks for all the tips! Good luck to you and everyone else! I know I will be glad after today to know the application process is officially over. Then we wait.....
