USF MSN-CNL non-nurse summer 2017

Published

Hello everyone! I am currently waitlisted in the spring 2017 cohort starting in Jan for the USF MSN-CNL non-nurse cohort 23, but I wanted to start a thread for those of you applying to the summer 2017 semester because if I don't get off the waitlist I will be reapplying for summer, and if I do get off the waitlist I can help you all with info on how the process works and what to expect. Either way, since I am going through it right now, I hope to be able to help new applicants. This time can be very stressful. Who all out there is applying?

I think you should email Erin or ingrid about that. They both work with admissions for the program!

just out of curiosity, how many of you speak another language/s...?

i indicated on my application that i would be interested in non-english speaking clinical placements - russian, for me. i noticed in yesterday's webinar/information session that Erin stressed demonstrating any diversity points in personal statements. so...of course, i reread my damn PS, again, for the hundredth time, this morning to make sure i hit all the stuff touched on during yesterdays session.

I think I mentioned on my application that I was interested in non-English speaking clinical statements. I took a semester of a Spanish medical terminology course but I've probably forgotten more than half of it. I took French in high school so Spanish was a little difficult for me - the accents and emphases and whatnot.

I'm fluent(ish) in Russian and also put that I would be interested in a non-english clinical placement. A spanish medical terminology class is super useful and I'm sure it looks great on your application!

I am fluent in American Sign Language but I don't think there is an option for that. They do have about 6 spots in the program reserved for Spanish speaking students who will do all their clinicals at "la clinica". Someone last semester who I know actually got emailed about the Spanish clinicals and had to set up a phone interview to test her Spanish. They do test your fluency to make sure you are fluent. I'm not sure about other languages as far as clinical placement but I do know that they value anyone who speaks another language because of the opportunities in the field for communication with people who don't speak English. It's a valuable thing to have and you do have an edge over others if you have more than one language!

yeah...i lived in russia for 5yrs after high school, then studied russian in the university. i'm fluent, but still, i suspect there is a lot i would have to learn to work in a clinical setting. hoping there aren't too many other russian-speakers applying in this cohort... :p

I can speak conversational Cantonese and some Mandarin and I indicated an interest in the non-english clinical placement too. It lines up with a goal of mine to be influential in the health field of SF's Asian-American community.

Darn, I reallyyyy hyped up hearing back from USF today lol. Guess we'll have to just wait and see.

Me too. I couldn't sleep at all last night.

i'm really hoping to find out before the 15th...because i'd like to apply to USF's MPH program - march 15 is deadline for summer online and also for fall early consideration. not being able to have more than one graduate application in at once is kind of frustrating. afton knows about that...

I never understood why applicants can't have more than one application in at a time. From an interface standpoint it looks like USF uses the same application portal/system as UCSF and Johns Hopkins University and neither of those institutions say you cannot have more than one application open. Perhaps it is a reviewer/staff/process issues more than a technical issue.

@afton; @aposse: Yeah good call. I'll just wait till Monday before I really have to do voice my concern.

haven't heard from anyone on here receiving a denial in quite awhile. i wonder what the size of the applicant pool is at this point. for some reason i was thinking there were 36 seats, but in yesterday's webinar they said 32. no indication as to how deep a waitlist goes.
