USF MSN-CNL non-nurse summer 2017

Published

Hello everyone! I am currently waitlisted in the spring 2017 cohort starting in Jan for the USF MSN-CNL non-nurse cohort 23, but I wanted to start a thread for those of you applying to the summer 2017 semester because if I don't get off the waitlist I will be reapplying for summer, and if I do get off the waitlist I can help you all with info on how the process works and what to expect. Either way, since I am going through it right now, I hope to be able to help new applicants. This time can be very stressful. Who all out there is applying?

so...i know a fb group was formed...but i totally missed that. if anyone is still on here, do you mind posting that link...? otherwise, i guess i'll see you all tuesday and grab that from someone then.

Hey Gabe, it's called USF CNL 24. I'm having trouble posting the link but just put that in the search box on Facebook.

Hello @aftonheistand, I've been a silent follower for the past month on allnurses and I read some of your posts and I find that you're so very kind and helpful. I just got rejected for USF MSN-CNL non-nurse spring 2018, and am thinking about reapplying for Summer 2018. Just want to ask if you have any advice on what to really focus on the personal statement or if by any chance you could help me read my personal statement in the future? Thanks in advance!

Hello, I currently applied for the summer 2018 program. Can anyone admitted for summer 2017 share what the start date for the program was. I know it i

is normally in May, but can anyone speak to whether it was mid or late May or even provide an exact date? I am trying to plan my schedule around the

case that I am hopefully admitted!

@gabe I have been reading this thread and have applied to Summer 18! I am also from Fresno. I wanted to see if you moved or did you commute? How is the semester going and what tips do you have to prepare

@afton How is school going? I read this thread and was on the edge of my seat for the entire time! I am playing the waiting game for Summer 18

i commute...kinda. i'm staying with a classmate in the bay area a few days a week during classes and clinicals. relocation wasn't practical for me. initially, i was doing airbnb and taking public transit from east bay. that is not very practical and would not have been a sustainable option long-term because of the travel time. i was looking at graduate housing for subsequent semesters - not bad option with usf in my opinion, but i don't know of anyone doing it - when a classmate offered an airbnb style alternative arrangement. if i were single, i would have definitely gone with university grad housing...or seek out rooming options with your cohort. personally, i wouldn't hassle with public transit. it's going to eat up a lot of your time, but a lot of people do it.

i don't know your background, but my education was business and law...no hard sciences. the didactic kicked my ass first two semesters, patho/pharm at least. i really struggled, but i don't think that's the case for ppl with science backgrounds. i haven't taken chemistry since high school...in 1999. :p statistical aspect of nursing research is a challenge - took stats in 2008 - but it doesn't seem to really matter, i'm doing fine. and i managed to pass patho/pharm, so i figure it's possible for anyone to do it, no matter background. and if i'm going to be completely honest, i mostly do the bare minimum in didactic courses. i just want to pass. i have an active life outside of school and most of the didactic is pointless academia in action - it's mostly irrelevant to practice. 90% of what is learned in nursing school will never be used. most of your education comes from experience on a specific unit AFTER nursing school. the clinicals are as close to nursing as you'll get as a student. my opinion, don't stress about school...it's not worth it. everyone is going to be stressed the **** out.

if your big about gpa, then make sure you keep track of quality points in classes. getting an A in a pass/fail class is the same as any other passing grade, which is a B- at USF. and you need to maintain an overall B average - 3.0. anyway...spending a lot of time on pointless classes won't help you. focus on the higher quality point, and certainly graded, courses to affect gpa.

regarding waitlisting, i don't know what is typical for usf, but it seems like a large section of my cohort came in off the waitlist - given those that referenced it in conversation. obviously, not everyone wants to share that fact, because some ppl are gonna judge, assuming someone is somehow less qualified as a waitlist acceptance versus admitted, but yeah. ****, i've heard some ppl even say as much, so i'm figuring there are more that came off the waitlist than ever talked about it. i don't think a lot of ppl understand how it works. admitted, waitlisted...? who knows why...and who cares?!? anyway, we lost 4 students in our cohort in the first semester, so kind of sucks there because they took a spot that someone else could have had.

good luck to you. shoot me an email if you want to know more or have any additional questions: [email protected]

@Gabe Thanks for the great information! I emailed you. I would love know more about what to expect schedule wise. I want to continue to work 20 hours a work week.
