US Nurses Wishing to Work Overseas

World Registration

I am starting this thread as a sticky at the request of one of our members, for a place for those that wish to emigrate from the US to work as an RN.

Please feel free to post your concerns and questions about working overseas here.

Does anyone have information in working in Abu Dhabi or Dubai? I would love to know about (of course,) salary and contract options. Also, do you need a BSN to work there. I have mine but a friend of mine does not. (I am almost finished with my Masters in Nursing Education).

Thank you to anyone who has any current info!

hello:

there is a lot of information here and vary valuable, thank you. i noticed that accelerated programs may not always give you the hours required to work overseas. my question relates to a rnĂ  msn program. i am a nurse of 28 years experience, with an associate degree in nursing.:redbeathe a lot of cardiology experience, ed, icu and med/surg. i am now enrolled with walden university in the rn to ms in nursing program, it is all on line. i am wondering how this stacks up for working as an educator overseas. my parents were missionaries while we were growing up and i wish to return after retirement here in the usa. i am fluent in spanish, have lived in peru, ecuador and bolivia.

any thoughts on this subject? should i get a bsn as well as the ms degree?

Hi, I'm an ER nurse wishing to find a travel nursing agency that places US nurses in New Zealand/ Australia. The World Health Exchange agency used to do this, but I don't think they are currently in operation. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My boyfriend may be getting stationed in South Korea; if he does we'll be getting married a bit sooner so that my son and I can move over with him. I'll have my LPN in August and have been trying to find out if I can work over there; we'll be there two years so I'll have to put off my next year of school until we get back. Is being an RN one of the requirements, or is it possible to work as an LPN? I may try to get a job at a hospital or clinic on post; if anyone has any information I'd be so appreciative! He's been trying to get information from his commanding officer, but it's difficult for him to pin him down. I know there are online LPN to RN programs as well, but wasn't sure whether they'd be accredited; I'd hate to spend the money on one and find out I'll just have to do it all over once I'm back in the states.

Hi EarthMama9,

I have never lived in South Korea but my husband is AF and we are currently stationed in Germany. As an LPN you can work on the military base in a few different capacities. You could work as a Tricare liaison (this is always a LPN position). You can work on the nurse line where you give advice for those that call in with medical questions or wondering if they should go to the clinic vs the ER, etc. I also know a LPN here that works as the safety officer making sure everyone in the clinic is up on their training and CEUs and also making sure the clinic maintains their standards for accreditation. As a RN you can work as the New Parent Support Nurse or as the WIC consultant.

I know University of Phoenix is a reputable school that the military will pay for, even for you as a spouse. I know they do ADN to RN, but not sure about LPN to RN.

Hope this helps some. I'd definitely look at usajobs.com and search under the base you are going to. That will help you know what is available to you at that base.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Even if USC you will be classed as International trained if trained outside the US and have to meet that requirement when applying to BON. You will also have to sit NCLEX and pass

BON is Board of Nursing and would say BSN is probably the better route to take

Hi guys,

I was recently speaking with a friend of mine who's husband (along with herself and their kids) is posted overseas with the foreign service and she was mentioning that there existed such position within the foreign service called 'specialist' positions, one of those being a medical officer. I got onto the foreign service website and read a little bit about everything and it had some really good information concerning accreditation, hiring requirements, etc. but I was wondering if anyone here had first (or even second) hand knowledge of this kind of work. I understand that all these positions are hired through the US government and have nothing to do with the countries they may be located in, but does anyone know what medical officer work with the foreign service entails? I'd just like to learn as much as I can about nursing options abroad. Thanks!

Hi all, new to this site. I too would like to know about nursing opportunities with US embassies abroad (perhaps as a staff RN, but not a Medical Officer?), or other similar options. My situation is this: I am currently applying to accelerated second degree BSN programs, to start in 2010 (I have my B.A. in Psychology, but I am NOT yet a nurse). After I had already begun my applications, my boyfriend got word that he had gotten his dream job with the Department of State, which will require him to travel internationally and work at various US embassies for the course of his career, staying at each post for 1-3 years. I was originally under the impression that an RN from the US could travel to other countries and work with relative ease. However, after doing some research online (and reading posts here), it seems that may not be the case. Does anyone have any insight into the possibilities of maintaining a nursing career while living a military-type lifestyle (i.e. moving from country to country, every 1-3 years)? Am I crazy to think I could pull it off? Thanks so much.

I'm here trying for the same -how to transfer my lpn to Mexico. Any news would be good news.
