US Nurses Wishing to Work Overseas

Published

I am starting this thread as a sticky at the request of one of our members, for a place for those that wish to emigrate from the US to work as an RN.

Please feel free to post your concerns and questions about working overseas here.

Okay, I have something wrong with me; I can't see how to narrow down the jobs to the international. Any guidance...?

I never get any responses to my questions about working in Dubai so good luck getting your answers. I hope someone replies to your question!

There is much already that has been posted about working in Dubai, you just need to take the time to do a search on this forum. Things have not changed there so information is still the same.

That is why you are not getting any responses specifically. Only difference is that not as many from the US are wishing to work over there right now as there were in the past.

No one is forced to respond to a thread that someone posts, if someone has information to add, they will; but as I said, much can already be found on this very topic.

I would really like to work overseas and several different places interest me:

South Africa

Australia

Netherlands

I currently have an ASN and am an RN in the United States. I am a Canadian citizen, will have my US citizenship by next year, and am working on getting back the Dutch citizenship that my parents gave up 20 years ago.

Also will be completing an RN-BSN program in 2011 but I don't start until 2009 and was hoping to perhaps do some traveling if it's feasible. Otherwise I can wait until after I'm done with the BSN.

Oh yeah, and I don't really have experiance as I'm a new grad. I did work as an LPN for 1 year and a CNA for 8 years but I'm sure that doesnt count for much. . .

I suppose I should have included my question in that post: How difficult would it be to work in any of those countries in my current situation, or a few years down the road? Has anyone else worked in any of those countries, if so please tell me your experiances with moving there to work.

Thanks :)

At the moment, almost impossible as most of them require the full four year degree; especially for Europe and do be aware that there is a hiring freeze in place for the EU countries and you would have to pass the language exam as well as the licensing exam in their language.

They also require experience, and will count only that which is done as an RN. They do not give credit for the other years.

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned, but I have just been reading a UK nursing journal and it has an article about changes in the new immigration controls being introduced in November 08. From what I understand if a hospital wishes to sponsor an overseas nurse thay will have to apply for a license and be added to a register of sponsors. Any they wish to sponser will be assessed as per a points system - similar to Australia

For nurses wishing to re-locate to the UK the changes are explained at the address below

Is there a hiring freeze in Germany as well?

A good friend of mine who is a german expat told me that to be able to work there as a nurse, you would have to have a professional/academic knowledge of the language and of their medical terms... and he told me that the pay is probably around $20 - 30k / yr... and then you have to contend with the high cost of living and taxes...

We had a couple of German nurses posting I think it was last year and commented on how hard it was to get work in Germany. You will need to meet their requirements and probably pass a German language exam but also seeing as they are part of the EU may have problems getting work permit if not from the EU

I wouldn't care too much about the money, so much as for the experience. Is there ANYWHERE in the world besides Canada that it's easier for an American nurse can go with a BSN? I thought we were supposed to be in demand!/whine
