US nurse wanting to go to Canada

I was just wondering how difficult it is to try to get into canada to practice, i have an associate degree as a registered nurse and have been out of school for three years now and am currently working as an ICU nurse, any feedback or places to contact would be much appreciated :)

All depends on which part of Canada that you wish to go to. Several of the provinces are now requiring a BSN for initial licensure.

If you take a look back at some of the posts on this forum, you will find the addresses to the equivalent of their Board of Nursing for each of the different provinces.

Certain provinces require a BSN now. I know Alberta doesn't and has plenty of jobs. You would have to apply to their licensing board and write the Canadian nursing exam to get your lisence. Then you can look for work. Thanks to NAFTA, you can get a yearly renewable work visa pretty easily.

I too would like to inquire about working in Canada as well. I'm looking specifically to work in Toronto. I was looking into Mount Sinai. Can anyone give me any feedback or tips about this hospital? I'm thinking of doing it through a nursing travel company but I'm not sure if they can contract work for outside of the U.S. I currently work in San Diego, CA. Are there other teaching hospitals in Ontario that anyone can recommend?

I'm curious to know what the differences between the U.S healthcare system vs Canada's Healthcare System. Also, does Ontario have any laws about nurse to patient ratios or does that depend on each hosptial? Sorry for the silly questions.

I go to the audiology clinic at Mt. Sinai for my hearing aids. My audiologist has her master's degree, and is top-notch. I've never worked in the hospital, or been a patient there, but my impression, after 15 years of going to their clinic, is that it is a really, really excellent hospital, with very high standards.

Travel contracts like we have in the US do not exist in Canada. You will need to come up with another option.

Mount Sinai is a really good hospital, I think it's one of the best in Canada. It is all RN now and the patient ratios are good. You can pm me if you have any specific questions.

I've lived in Toronto for 30+ years and just recently moved to the USA. I am an OR nurse. Mount Sinai is an excellent hospital...teaching hospital. The University Health Network, which includes The Toronto General Hospital, The Toronto Western Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital are also excellent. St. Michael's and Sunnybrook Hospital, trauma hospitals are good to. TGH or Toronto General Hospital is a great great teaching hospital and they just built on a brand new building...lots of money, lots of job security. The website to go to research about Canadian RN licensure is: http://www.cno.org. The Colleg of Nurses of Ontario...their website is loaded with information. Good Luck, any big hospital that you choose in Toronto, Ontario is great! I've trained and worked at them ALL!

I had a friend who worked in Mount Sinai's ER for two years before she moved to the US. She really liked it there. Mt Sinai is just one of several teaching hospitals in Toronto. I'm sure Mount Sinai has a website, just do a search under Google. I left Toronto 4 yrs ago and back then only a couple of hospitals were offering $$ incentives to recruit nurses, i.e., relocation assistance. Hopefully that situation has changed in the time I've left. And as Suzanne mentioned, be sure to check out the website for the College of Nurses of Ontario....http://www.cno.org

barely asking, can i still be able to work or do i have a chance to work abroad specifically at ontario canada eventhough i don't get Local Board here in our country. i'm in my 4th level & soon be graduated next year... i have 2 kids & it is my 2nd course... rgrds :)
