UPMC Shadyside 2010 hopefuls

Published

I'm hoping to get into Shadyside in either sprig 2010 or the fall. Anyone else out there already accepted or trying as well?

Hello everyone! I am taking my psb for shadyside this friday and i was reading through some responses on what is on it and i found everyones to be very helpful, especially aderr02. I have a quick question about what kind of math is on it like fractions, decimals, word problems? Also what does the science part mainly focus on, more chemistry, or physics? and i also heard there were some nutrition questions on it too. Thanks in advance!:)

How did your psb go?! I took mine Wednesday and thought it went pretty good!! now we just have to wait forevvvvvvvvvvvvver for the results!!

Thanks alot! Like I said, there are more than just us three that will be disappointed! Dozens of people taking the test last will now have to wait...Let's pray for Fall admission!

Hi Sharawnda!

Did you get into Fall 2010 admission?!

Hi, I didn't receive notice either way from Shadyside. I have decided to attend Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, anyhow. I start in August!

Hey Sharawnda,

Congrats on your entrance into Mercy SON!!!

I emailed Natalie a few weeks ago and she told me that they hadn't begun the review for the fall 2010 class at Shadyside just yet, so I'm in the same boat as you on the news from there. At least you'll be on your way...

Best of luck to you and study hard!! Keep in touch!

Hello Everyone,

I went to an informational session at Shadyside SON on a few weeks ago and they told everyone there that they had not started reviewing applications yet and wouldn't be until mid April to the end of April. Because they don't know if they are going to increase the tuition for the fall class. Alot of people that was there did not take the test yet so alot of spaces are still availiable. They also let it be known that applications would be reviewed on a first come first serve basis so no need to worry about whether they pick you from a whole group of people to decide whether you get accepted or not. I also wanted to apply for Mercy SON nursing but once I went to Shadyside SON my mind was made up I thnik they have one of the best diploma programs in the city hand's down also Mercy SON has a lower passing rate and retention rate as seen on the PA Board of Nursing only 40 to 50 people taking the the NCLEX exam I wonder how many people they accept? Shadyside has consistently produced over a 100 of people testing the first time so that tells me that Shadyside SON wants to see their students suceed. The clinical hours are far more than Mercy because you have to take in account the the hands-on experience you will recieve in the simulation lab that's right at the school that you can access on a daily basis. The fact that Mercy doesn't have a thread on here scares me too they should know about this site by now you can't even ask any former or current students any questions about the school or St. Margaret SON either. Also I must add that Shadyside SON tuition assistance will still be provided which would be 17,000 from them and 10,000 from you which financial should cover. I would also like to hear from you guys who started in the March class to let us know how it's going and what to expect.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to drop in even though I probably will not be attending nursing school until 2011. I've gone back and forth on pharmacy versus nursing and pretty much decided I would prefer to be in direct patient care, but I just moved back to Pgh and have to get everything in order first. SSoN is my first choice right now so I love reading about the application process, testing, and what everyone thinks! I think it's going to be a lot of hard work just to get in, let alone once the program starts, but I can't wait. :D

The hardest part is getting into the first two or three testing dates since it is first-come, first-serve. Everything from then is a cake walk. You're right, the hardest part is waiting for the answer.

I wish you the best and will (God willing) see you around the school!

Oh and welcome home!

Hey Everyone! =)

I emailed Natalie on Wednesday asking her about the PSB test results and if they were mailed yet for the March 24th test date. She said she mailed them out on Tuesday but I still haven't received anything yet! Has anyone else got theirs back yet?

If they are thinking about increasing the tuition for the Fall class, then how can we know what the Tuition will be, or if there will be Tuition Forgiveness at all? When I went to the information session in October, I was told that the student contribution with TF would be $10000, but there was a possibility that it might go up. Mercy does indeed have a simulation lab, but it is not as advanced as the Shadyside one, I"ll admit. It isn't in a separate building or anything. I think Nursing School is what you make of it for the most part, and it depends on the student and what they prefer and how they learn which determines success.

Also, there is a thread for Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.

From what I've gathered with contacts in the school admin, there still will be tuition forgiveness. The change is solely on the sticker price, not what we'd have to pay out.

Hello Everyone,

As stated in my last post the reason why they have not started reviewing applications is because they are still deciding if they are going to go up on tuition or not but there will still be loan forgiveness. I understand that nursing school is what you make of it but the other part is how good the school and if the nursing school really want to see their students suceed. I know that Mercy has a simulation lab but it's all the way in Oakland not at the school. Mercy does have a thread with a few people who don't even go to the school as of yet basically I need to be able to ask somebody besides the faculty about how their school is and right now I can't do that so that's a problem for me. At the end of the day you have to get in where you fit in and all I was saying is that I decided Shadyside SON is my choice and why I made that choice I wasn't trying to talk about nobody else for whatever school they decided too go to.
