2018 UPenn BSN/MSN

Published

Greetings fellow 2018 UPenn BSN/MSN applicants! Just thought I could start a thread for the incoming applicants so we can help each other out through the application process.

Does anyone know if we need to submit separate transcripts for study abroad programs if it's already clearly stated on our official undergraduate transcript? Thanks! : )

For all the CNM's interviewing today how did it go? How many people are interviewing? When will we find out admission statuses? My email address is [email protected] if you want to PM. Thanks! I hope it went well for everyone!

The in person interview for CNM went pretty well I think.

Overall, there were a lot more CNMs interviewing than I expected. Maybe around 30? Plus all of the people who have phone interviews... I'm guessing at least 50 people got interviews. It honestly made me a little bit nervous.

We will know our status in the First week of February. We will get an email later that will tell us the exact date and time. Everyone's application gets updated at the same time so we know either way if we made it or not.

My interviewer was very nice. She didn't really ask me much about my essay or resume though, which was a little disappointing. She seemed to be most concerned with grades and language skills (good news if you speak Spanish!). Overall, I think it went fine.

One interesting thing that I wasn't aware of: if you're under 30, Penn requires that you submit your parents' W2s and Tax Return information. For the BSN portion, you are still considered an undergraduate student and will not be eligible for a Grad Plus loan. Most students have to take out private loans for the accelerated portion for this reason. Private loans often require a co-signer unless you've been working for several years and have great credit and "money in the bank" as they put it. Additionally, we will have to submit our W2s and tax information in addition to the FAFSA but I believe that happens with the IRS automatic retrieval tool.

On a lighter note, the campus was beautiful, the faculty was top notch (and great at fielding our financial aid questions). If anyone has any other questions I'd be happy to field them!

Thanks @MidwifeLife for the info! Do you know how large the entire cohort will be? How many spaces are there for midwifery? How many people will be offered admission? Did they say?

They didn't tell me directly, but I heard from some other folks that it will be in the low hundreds.

Also, I'm not sure how many direct-entry midwife students are accepted, but I believe there's 8-10 spots for accelerated students.

Wow, that is low compared with other schools and as an overall percentage of the entire cohort. I see what you mean by it being competitive. Thank you again for the information. Something to think about for my interview tomorrow.

Yes, I believe in person interviews went well. They had quite the day laid out for us, which was nice! My interviewer was also very, very nice. She did not ask me much about experiences either, it was mostly a conversation that lasted about 30-35 minutes. Everyone was very lovely though and I think it went well!

I agree - my interview (PMHNP) was mainly a freeform interview; she only asked one or two questions. One about my essay and one asking what my favorite animal was! But yeah, overall it was amazing. The campus is gorgeous and compact, and it felt like there was so much diversity and community there. Going to be so hard to wait until Feb!

@Midwifelife So you're going for the BSN/MSN cohort? I heard after I interviewed back in November they were going to tell the MSN only before the December Holidays. I'm wondering if this is still the case. Makes me really nervous! I know they're accepting 18 students for the MSN only portion, seems like the majority are going to the direct-entry students.

To those who applied for the FNP track, has anyone received any updates back regarding the application process?

Nope!

Nope - I was told that we wouldn't hear anything until final decisions are made. So we can expect to hear something in Feb with everyone else.

I just had my interview with the NM faculty and all I can is..... wow! I went way over my allotted time but I think it went well and the interviewer was nice enough to accommodate my questions. Now we just have to wait until February to find out. Good luck to everyone else that still has interviews coming up.
