Here's a few things I've seen:

The Russians insist for gastroenteritis vodka with black pepper. A couple of kids even got out of detention when they found vodka in their rooms, because the parents explained it was medicinal. It turns out this was not just an excuse, but is widely believed. They use vodka for many of their health problems. I've never tested this theory out, but they truly believe it, Who knows?

A grain of sugar in a hard to get out splinter - a Zimbabwean nurse showed me this, and it really worked. The sugar apparently draws in fluid, and the splinter works its way out. Never used it myself, but watched the result when my colleague has. There have been some stories in the papers about the use of sugar lately, so they might have some hard evidence soon.

Fractured clavicles - we had some problems because the Russian parents insisted a middle clavicle fracture should be operated and put back in alignment, while local doctor's said no. Parents still angry despite 3 doctor's recommendations, and flew child home for surgery.

Bedrest - for minor coughs/colds, Russian parents insist on complete rest in bed, and the insist that a temp of 37.0 centigrade is a fever.

Just some of the interesting things I've come across.

For those of you who would like to read a true story about Western medicine and Hmong traditional medicine colliding, "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down" is a must read!!

It changed the way I looked at both types of medicine.

I read that when it first came out. Amazing and sad book.

Yes, I would recommend it as well.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I have had several older diabetic residents tell me that eating mustard lowers blood sugar levels.

Ok, I gotta list diabetic "cures" I've heard in my diabetic lifetime:

Essential oils

Cannabis oil

Coconut oil

Okra water

Mustard seed (actually heard from a few it helps with resistance)

Cinnamon

Tumeric (uh doesn't India have a sky high diabetes rate?)

Chromium (again I've heard good things from other diabetics)

Eat raw foods (nope)

Eat atkins (nope still not cured, just cranky)

Drink water at specific times of the day

Various miracle multi level marketing scheme protein shakes

Noni juice

Reki

Acupuncture

Going gluten free (I already am, diabetes and Celiac are buddies)

There are more, I'm sure of it...

Cattail or cat's tail? My cat is an A-hole and I get cat's tail in my eye all the time. Hmm, I have never had a stye, either.

When reading & posting online, I use LOL all the time, but I rarely actually laugh out loud. This comment, however, had me rolling in laughter w/tears in my eyes. Probably because I also have a cat who is an a**hole. 🐈 🐾 😊

I'll add goldenseal. I've heard cinnamon, too. I'm sure I've heard more, but I'm a T1DM, so I usually just thank them and forget what they've suggested.

When I was in my 20s everyone assumed right, but as soon as I turned 30 when I would tell someone I'm diabetic they'd say, "So young! That's a shame."

I've read in three times now. I read in the first time in high school when it first came out, again when I first became a nurse, and again when I was feeling burnt out after a few years of nursing. Each time I get a new perspective on it.

I seem to attract people who think it's cool to comment on someone else's health status like flies. It usually goes something like this:

Stranger: hey what's that? *pointing at my insulin pump or my CGM

Me: My insulin pump, cgm, * insert any diabetes device I might be using in the moment.

Stranger: Like for diabetes? My grandma had that she lost a foot, and died blind in the hospital on dialysis.

Me: I'm sorry for that, diabetes management has come a long way.

Stranger: Well I heard you could be cured but *insert conspiracy theory here* and if you just *insert bogus cure here* you could get off all that insulin. It's poison. It's really what kills you.

SMDH at least twice a month I have this conversation. Either this one or I get told how I'm too thin or too young.

A med student told me I shouldn't go on a pump because, "they're for people who want to eat candy bars and be unhealthy."

I suggested she not quit her day job.
