I must be missing something because the interview doesn't sound that strange to me. I guess I would have had to have been there. As far as asking about PICC line placement, that is a reasonable question to ask. They are just wanting to know about extra skills you may have that would be an addition to their unit. And, as far as holidays go...I'm not paid if I don't work them either.
My resume clearly expressed my experience. If i had had Picc line insertion training you better believe it, I would put that on top of my list. Nursing school was not free you either pay with time, money, family sacrifice etc. And we need to be rewarded for our expertise. Okay suppose i had picc line insertion experience do you think she was going to be willing to pay me more for that? I don't believe so coz i Have a BSN and she said it didn't make a difference.
"Stand for something"
omg, i would have said "adios" after the first couple of questions.
doesn't sound like they're too concerned about a nurse's scope of practice.
and, likely trying to pay a $25/hr wage out of a $35/hr nurse.
(still shaking my head)
there is better out there.
you need (and deserve) a job that will support your professional status:
not suffocate it.
best of luck.

I don't know a whole lot about hospital nursing, but I do know that when I worked in pharmacy at a hospital you had to work X amount of holidays per year and if you worked them you got time and a half plus an 8 hour day off put in your bank for future use. As far as asking about things that are not in your normal scope of practice, you can learn anything but can't do it if it's not in your scope. I'm not a RN, but that interview sounded weird to me too. Go somewhere where they are willing to offer you what you deserve for your degree.

I just had an interview with a hospital in the southwest and it was unreal. They are hiring telemetry nurse and you must be ACLS current. Thats fair enough. During the interview they ask me if i know how to insert a central line. I tell them that that's not in my scope of practise. Then they ask if I know how to insert a picc line and I tell them am not a trained IV nurse all i can insert is a regular IV then she says oh thats what i ment.
Down to benefits, They offer health insurance and it kicks in 2-3months after hire depending on your start date. The nurse recruiter had tipped me on the bonus they are offering. The interview didn't mention it at all so i asked her about it and she said it's at the discretion of the nurse manager. The she talked about holidays, she said that they celebrate the holidays but you will not get paid unless you work. however, you are expected to work them.
I almost told the lady that i am not a volunteer service but guys beware before you work for people don't let them use you. If they feel nursing is that easy let them do it. We paid our dues and they need to know this
