Hey Guys!
Didn't see anyone start one yet for this application round for UW nursing and though may as well start one.
Hopefully this will help everyone out that reads this, and that joins into the conversation.
Ive been reading the past BSN application posts, and already learned a lot of info!
I think most of us can point out things we wish we would have done better, but the reality is that they give us 1 hour without any notes to prepare on. Their expectations must be different than how we personally reflect on our essays once we finished. If they had given us 4 hours to complete it, then sure, we all should have left feeling 100% confident. I'm guessing their main assessment of us is how well we followed directions and whether we provided good reasoning for our choices.
I was surprised to hear so many applied this year. 520 right? It's great that we made it to the essay :)
Savestheworld,
I did the same scenario and spoke about the same issues for the most part. I felt like I repeated myself a bit too, but in a situation like that where you can't really edit, you're pressed for time, etc., I think they probably expect that. I think they care a lot about the thought process behind your answers, coherence, spelling/grammar. I left feeling terrible about it because I'm used to producing higher caliber work than I did last night, but after thinking it through a little I think we probably did well considering the circumstances.
From the UW SoN website regarding common reasons for denial last year:
I know someone that answered a math problem wrong last year in the proctored essay, but was admitted to the program and has done really well. There's still hope!
I want to point out that being invited to the proctored essay is a great achievement, especially considering that ~520 applied. Congrats!
Ah hi everyone!
I've stalked allnurses for the passed two years, and it's crazy how now I'm actually part of the forum!
I took the proctored essay yesterday as well! For the math problems I also got 20ml, 1.8 ml and 1400 ml.
As for the essay, i chose scenario 2.. which can honestly go either way. I was skeptical to choose it due to the fact I have not dealt with a transgender patient before, but I was told by one of the members of the committee last year to choose a patient that highly challenged me and to stray away from a scenario that was in my comfort zone. Anyways, good luck everyone!
Hi guys! Just found this board after writing the proctored essay last night. First of all congrats to everyone who applied and made it that far! I am super nervous because I read the first math question wrong and instead of multiplying by 2, I divided.. I realized it after I left 😔 However I also got 9/5 (left it as that for sake of time, hopefully it's accepted as right..) and 1400mL.
I chose ore to write about scenario one as it was the one that would challenge me the most and tied it into some current experiences I have had working as a cna.
The worst part is the wait.. And beating myself up about things I should've done different/mentioned in the essay. Hopefully it's enough!
ejadee,
Yeah I chose scenario two as well because I said I have the least amount of experience with taking care of this kind of individual. I really played on my strengths for the essay and made sure to tie in how my strengths would manifests into actions for the patient. I remember saying how I was a culturally and socially competent caregiver and because of this I know to use gender-inclusive pronouns such as "you all" in order to make the patient feel comfortable. Reading the different forums from years past was definitely helpful!

Sounds like you wrote a stellar essay! I cannot say the same for myself in all honesty. I felt as if I was all over the place and kept repeating same ideas. I did however address all the questions and mentioned how although I am not familiar with dealing with this type of patient that I know it will give me perspective in what it means to be transgender in our community and will teach me the means to be flexible. I touched on my experience with the homeless and personally dealing with asthma so therefore I could empathize with the patient. Ahh my explanations sound better on here than the essay haha the pressure in that room was intense!

I also got 20, 1.8, and 1400! I picked scenario 1 and felt like 1 answered A and B well but not so much C. We will just have to wait and see. Good luck all!
