University of Rochester Accelerated Nursing Program - ABPNN

U.S.A. New York

Published

I just got accepted into U of R's accelerated bachelors nursing program. Just wanted to start a thread to see who else is going there!

SyberianPuppy --

Sure. I had a 3.1 at the local community college, and a 3.3 at RIT - my 4 year school. I got a degree in Applied Systems and Network Administration.

I am currently taking the prereqs. I was just finishing the first 2 of 5 classes when I interviewed. I had a 98 and 95 in those. I am now taking the remaining 3 and I have 90+ grades in all three right now. They asked me how I was doing in those classes before I was told I was accepted.

I worked for 6 years as a Certified Nursing Assistant at a nursing home, but that ended 7 years ago or so. I'm sure the fact that I didn't have the prereqs done was a strike against me, but apparently I had a few things going for me. With my previous experience, and the fact that my dad is a Dr. and teaches Micro, and that I finished school and did OK grade wise while losing my brother to cancer. I am also a firefighter. Pretty varied background. I'm sure all of those things played a good part in getting me accepted. I'm sure my reference letters helped too...one is a well placed NP who just interviewed and got accepted for the DNP program there. The other was my Deputy Chief at the Fire Department. Also -- as you probably guessed -- I'm a guy. We only represent 15% of the average class at U of R...and maybe 5% of the total nursing population. I'm sure it helped, and hell I'm ok with that.

I've spoken to a few people in my area who have gone through the program as well. One guy did it purely as a business decision. He had a B.S. in Marketing and an MBA I think and was in sales and got laid off in the economic slouch. So he decided to go into nursing to have a steady paying career and make good money. Now he's working in a cardiac step down unit. No previous experience, just a background in business and marketing. He got the idea from watching nurses take care of his grandmother in the hospital.

When did they say you'd be hearing something back? I'm not sure when they start sending letters for May start dates. Good luck to you!

Thanks Ansa!

Actually - I haven't applied yet. The due date for May cohort is March, but I'm just feeling things out before I start. I'll be receiving a BS in Biology from Cornell for my undergrad, and I've finished all but two pre-reqs, which I am in now (Human Dev. and Stats). I have a 94 in HD and a 97.5 in stats right now. I'm also taking a class at Cornell to be a certified EMT, which I love and I'm hoping will help. Both my pre-reqs will be from profs (Anatomy and EMT profs) and...I'm also a guy! :)

Hey Everyone,

I was accepted last week to the AMPNN (Adult/Family Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner) for January 2010! I am extremely happy. My only concern right now is funding. Anyone find any good resources for student's in our situation (a lot of aid requires you have your RN lic.)? I would really appreciate any and all suggestions

i was just up in rochester looking for housing. i saw several of the houses listed under http://www.studenthousingrochester.com/. most of them have been rented to other nursing and medical students, but a few rooms were still available.

these houses are all located in a very nice residential area right next to the strong memorial hospital and the nursing school. several students in the acclerated program lives in these houses and they all have good things to say about the housing facilities. many houses were newly renovated and many rooms have their own private bath rooms. several students did not even bring a car. walking to school and occasional car pooling to other hospitals had been sufficient. this will be a good place to live!

@SiberianPuppy,

Double check your dates. I believe the deadline for May is November 1 and the deadline for the September cohort is March.

@nycclara- Congratulations!!!

Has anybody been up visiting Rochester and found housing?

Jane

Congratulations to those that got accepted! = )

Unfortunately, I am placed in the third batch so I won't be getting a reply until after October 25. I am starting to worry that there won't be any more open spots for me by then. = (

To Jevell: Did you have to go in to a second interview for the AMNPP program? I applied for that program originally, but I only had to do one interview, and I was told that the bachelor's program is better suited for me at this time.

Don't worry - I have heard that they take a lot from the waiting list. Last year people were accepted well into December.

Good luck!!!

Congrats to all of you accepted into the January cohort! It's a great program =) I wanted to put out there that if any of you are interested, there is a house near the U of R with 2 rooms available. You would be living with 2 nursing students from the May cohort, awesome advantage. It's a four bedroom house with about a 15 minute walk or 5 minute bike ride. Let me know if you would like more information.

I have been looking at

http://www.studenthousingrochester.com/index.php

and found the house on 168 Irvington Road to be very nice. Two minutes walk from the school! I have been told there will be at least one room available http://www.studenthousingrochester.com/168irvington.php

There are four nursing students in the house at this time, but two will be leaving Rochester after finishing the program in December. It would be nice to have more nursing students to live with.

Does anyone have any info about the waiting list at this point? I've read about the second batch of letters going out by October 25th. Will U of R be sending out any more acceptance offers?

I called and they said they were all done - i dont know what it mean - you should probably call and ask if there is still hope.

Anybody else having any info?
