Hi All,
I'm new to this site and to the field of nursing. Has anyone gone to this school and if so, what did you think?
I live in San Diego, CA, and there is an online program that this school offers. I'm 3 prerequisites away from applying to the school, with a start date of August 08. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Nicole
I graduated this past August from the SD campus and was just hired at Sharp Grossmont's new grad residency program.
My advice for students or future students is to find ways to make yourself stand out from other new grads. Get a job as a CNA, volunteer, join the student nursing association, etc. Get certified in ACLS, PALS, NRP, etc. Also, treat your preceptorship like it is a job interview, which means do the best you can while precepting. Get to know the nurses and ask them for their adive. Ask to meet with the nurse manager. One of my classmates got hired on her floor where she precepted at after graduation. I applied to at least a hundred positions before getting hired at Sharp. There are just too many nursing school graduates being pumped out and not enough new grad positions. Like the other poster said, a lot of people in our cohort did not even get an interview at Sharp because there are just too few positions available.

Fantastic advice!! I couldn't agree more. I think treating your preceptorship like a job interview is the best thing you can do. As well as meeting with the manager of your unit. I've mentioned in another thread how during my interview, they really remembered me continually making myself available when my patients were stable and did not require any immediate nursing care. I made sure to help out whenever I could and wherever I could. And learn how to relate well to others and be NICE, express/show your willingness to learn and try EVERYTHING. I think being "trainable/teachable" is very important in their eyes.
I saw the earlier message about the informational meeting for the next application period opening up. Thanks for posting that because I was wondering what was happening with the program. It said the info meeting was in Glendale. Does this apply to the SD campus as well or only Glendale. I am in San Diego and interested in applying here. I thought I was on the their interested list, but I did not get any email from the Sharp accelerated program. If anyone could tell me how to proceed for SD I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
Thank you everyone for sharing your experience, both good and bad, about the program. It really is helpful to get the feedback.I'm anxious to hear what you learn on Wednesday. My info session is not until the end of the month. If you wouldn't mind, would you ask about taking CLEP tests for some of the prerequisites? I'm trying to figure out what I need to register for in the Spring. I'm hoping to CLEP test out of Psychology and/or Sociology, since those look to be new prerequisites for the program? If you get a chance to ask only.
Thanks!
Sure thing, I will ask about the CLEP tests for the prereqs... a few of the other schools require those specific classes ie: Speech must be public speaking not interpersonal speech or Psych not lifespan or vice versa... I am worried they are going to require more prereqs or different prereqs and possibly TEAS testing etc... I will post as soon as I can... =D
So cal
Has anyone attended the SDSU-OU info session yet? I am also interested in the pre-reqs. Hopefully things won't change to much from the OU program. I wonder what tution will be now that the progam is being operated in state by SDSU. Please post what you learned from the meeting when you can. I don't go for until next week and I am dying to know! I have already registered for classes at Mesa for the spring.

Hi Reeki,
I'm just finishing my first semester at OU and I was wondering what kinds of opportunities there were for the fourth semester preceptorship. Also, how did they decide who was placed where?
Thanks,
KT
