University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) DEMSN - Direct Entry Generalist MSN

Updated:   Published

Hello! I made this forum to connect with applicants or those planning to apply to UNLV's new MSN program for those with a non-nursing degree. Does anyone know when they'll start reviewing applications? It doesn't say on the website whether it is a rolling admission or not.

Hi guys and congrats to those that got accepted. I got accepted this am also for Summer 24 cohort but I will be deffering to fall 24. I need time to get my affairs in check.

How was y'all GPA looking like when selected ? Trying to see smth.  As for me, I had few B's and A's and still taking some pre'reqs so I will say my GPA was around 3.5 not counting the missing courses which must finish them prior to starting nursing school.

I strongly believe that selection is heavy on personal statement and that STAR method interview we took.

Congrats guys! Summer will be the last trimester for the inaugural cohort!

As for group chats, I would highly recommend orchestrating a group me chat. That's what my cohort uses. We set it up on orientation day and utilized that til we got Discord up and running and now we use both.

Student Gov / SNA will be at your orientation to help facilitate both of those things as well :]

Thank you! What does inaugural cohort mean if you don't mind me asking?

I have a 3.2 so I do think its strongly based on your interview and statement of intent.

How does the financial aid work for this program?
Tried to ask during info session and they pointed me to financial aid. I'll call them tomorrow but thought I'd ask the people with firsthand experience. So, how exactly does it work when it's a graduate one year program? I remember in undergrad, they would give you an award amount for the year and disperse half of it each semester. Do they also do the same thing in a graduate program where they tell you an award amount for the year and then disperse it three times a year? How early before the semester starts do they tell you what your bill is? When do they disburse funds, etc.? I have already submitted my FAFSA as well.
If anyone can also talk about their experience taking loans, not only for the cost of tuition, but for the cost of attendance, that would be super helpful too. Any info really would be super helpful. Not too much out there for grad student financial aid info. Thank you!

I'm in the same boat, im not sure how it works LOL. Let me know if you find out something.

I know someone asked this earlier but do you know how the financial aid works for a one year graduate program? I can't seem to find much info on that.

Nope. I was the one who asked. LOL! I'm going to call financial aid during my lunch break today and see if I can find anything out. I'll report back what I hear!

So financial aid said that grad students can only be offered unsubsidized loans up to $20,500 per academic year. Other than that, you can apply for other types of grants, scholarships, or a grad plus loan (on the financial aid website). They said basically you'll get a letter with any possible award after you accept admission, and then you can accept/ decline your aid award, then apply for other aid as needed. The grad plus loan is based on creditworthiness but can cover up to the cost of attendance (tuition plus living expenses).

I've also read about graduate assistantships and applied for some. They waive up to 9 credits per semester of tution cost if you work for 20 hours a week, plus you'll get a stipend (up to 17,000 per academic year, paid biweekly). Has anyone in the program thus far done a GAship? If so can you share any details!! Thanks!

Hey guys, just got accepted this week too, and congrats to everyone who did as well! I was also accepted to an Accelerated BSN program, but am leaning towards UNLV. Does anyone know if there's a difference in pay when starting between and MSN vs. a BSN? Since it's pretty much an entry level MSN, not sure if just the fact of having a Master's impacts the pay.

Also, I thought we weren't allowed to defer to Fall and have to re-apply and go through admissions again even after being accepted?

With the masters degree you are eligible to teach nursing classes at like a community college if you wanted to which you can't do with a BSN. It also makes you more eligible to go into like administrative stuff. As for pay starting out it is pretty much the same but I think later on you're eligible for higher pay once you have experience.

Hi quick question for people who have already started the program: are all of your clinicals in the clinical simulation center or do you still get to have real clinicals in the local hospitals with real patients? I am a little bit concerned because I can not find anything about it and everything I have seen seems to imply all the clinicals are in the simulation center and would prefer to choose a program that includes real clinicals in actual hospitals.

Hello everyone! I'm currently a Kin major graduating in Fall 2024 interested in applying for the DEMSN program. I have all of the prerequisites except for Microbiology (since it wasn't needed for my Kin degree) and I won't be able to take it by the time of graduation since I'm already taking 16 credits for my last semester. I was planning on taking Microbiology the semester after I graduate and aim to get in for Fall 2025, but the application is gonna be due mid semester in February before I finish the course. Am I able to apply while the course is in progress?

Yes you can apply while some course are being fulfilled, I got in while still taking some classes. Make sure you study the STAR method style of interview because you will need it during your interview. Also your pre'reqs must be all B's and up. No B- etc...Good luck to ya
