University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) DEMSN - Direct Entry Generalist MSN

Updated:   Published

Hello! I made this forum to connect with applicants or those planning to apply to UNLV's new MSN program for those with a non-nursing degree. Does anyone know when they'll start reviewing applications? It doesn't say on the website whether it is a rolling admission or not.

Hello ☺️

I'm also on the same boat, I submitted a couple weeks before Spring 24 deadline and also still waiting on a response. Beginning of November I asked them when we should expect to hear back and they replied with thanksgiving week, although it looks like we're gonna have to wait a little longer. I am really hoping to hear back before the deadline for Summer 24 cohort which is Dec 1 just in case for a back up ?

Oooh it sounds like we may be on track to hear this week. Fingers crossed!

Thank you!! ?

so are you in it now? What are your thoughts and how are you liking it?

I am in it now! I really like the program personally but there are a varying range of emotions about the program. I will say it is extremely fast paced and very self directed in the sense of you have an outline of the module for the week but mostly learn by reading and teaching yourself. The staff have been supportive with supplemental material this semester but I assume that varies by professor. It is a new program so there are growing pains but overall I have been happy this semester. I think you get out of it what you put into it, and expect to put a LOT of time and energy into it.

Hi everyone, for those in the program what goes on during orientation? Is it the whole day? Thank you!

It was basically an orientation to the school and the program. It was a full day of going over everything. It was a lot of information so definitely have your coffee in the morning and come prepared to listen to a lot of talking and getting to know your cohort ?

Thank you for your response, I appreciate it!

I am coming from California - how often are the clinicals or times we have to be at the school? The flight is an hour and cheap so I figured I would just fly in and get a hotel for a night each week if I had to. Does that seem plausible?

There are people who did that this semester and I will say two of them said they're moving for the upcoming semester. In the beginning it was one day a week for skills learning. Then it'll be one day a week for skills and one day for clinical with some simulation days. Fridays are open lab which is theoretically practice but we quickly learned you need to attend a few of them to get sign offs for skills that you may not be able to finish in the skills class. So some weeks you're in person 1-2 or 1-3 days. It's doable, but I will say the ones who have been doing it all semester have said how tired they are. Some clinicals start at 545 am so also something to keep in mind.

That's fantastic! I'm glad you're liking it and thriving in the self-directed environment!

It's possible to do, but difficult. Due to traffic and airport wait times driving from the LA area or taking a flight will be the same time; 4 hours door to door. For the same reasons 3-4 hours from the Bay Area. The construction at LAX means an hour just to leave the airport. Because there is a designated area for ride share pick up at the Las Vegas airport and construction in the area you're looking at a minimum of 40 minutes to get from the airport to school. It may not sound like a big difference but since the program is so fast paced, spending a total of 7-8 hours just in travel time every week takes a toll and makes a big difference.

Thank you so much idk_why and crm23! I see now that it may be difficult and I will likely get tired after a semester. I will be flying out of Santa Ana and I'm five minutes away from the airport so in my mind it seemed more doable before receiving both of your inputs. It was also mentioned that there are very early clinical (is this the norm every week?) increasing the difficulty of commuting.

Are there currently any non-FB groups for the DEMSN program? I don't have one anymore. I would love to connect, maybe see if anyone from out of the area is thinking of getting housing there.

Also, for anyone wondering about admission, I was admitted to Spring 24 on November 27th, and the survey indicated orientation on 12/5 from 8-5pm on the acceptance survey. I rolled over my application from Fall and the change I had for my Spring application was that all my prerequisites were completed. For Fall admission I had my micro and physio still in progress.

For those already in the program, when is the paperwork/heath documents/clearance due? I fear I may have a really hard time getting an appointment if I have to have it by orientation!

In the first semester there are early morning clinicals beginning at 5:45am for half the clinical time then you switch to the afternoon clinicals beginning at 11:45am. The class is split into two groups one goes first for the morning and the other goes first for the afternoon time, then they switch. You have no control over which group you will be in, but everyone does mornings and afternoon clinicals (but not at the same time). After hour clinical day there is simulation lab the next day. So plan on being in person at least two days a week. (This does not include study groups and open lab) We just got our schedules for the 2nd semester, and there are two in person clinical days. They are back to back days so you could stay overnight, but that could change.  Changes could happen based on the needs of the hospital we are assigned to. There is not much flexibility for clinical hours because those standards are set by the State Board of Nursing.

As for the health paperwork contact [email protected]. She is very easy to work with. They were flexible with us; we could have pending Dr's appointments to obtain paperwork signatures at the time of orientation.  Just because of timing we were given an extension because the new 2022 flu vaccine was not available until late August. In addition during orientation they devoted about an hour to go over the health forms.

I was just accepted for Spring 2024! If there is any group chats to join please let me know! ?

How early on do they tell your what your clinical days/ times are? And if they change, do they tell you ahead of time so you can prepare adequately? (Thinking about other commitments like work or childcare)

thanks for all your replies!! ☺️
