University of Michigan 2nd Degree Accelerated BSN

Nursing Students School Programs

Has anyone applied to the University of Michigan's 2nd degree accelerated nursing program for start date Sept. 2014? Just curious to see what other applicants there are out there. I saw a very long thread in the past that had a lot of info on how long UofM takes to make decisions & felt we could all keep each other in the loop on how things are going for each of us. Good luck to all!

Oh wow! I had absolutely no idea there was that much of a difference between the two credit wise. Hmm, interesting. Before I forget to mention it, congrats on your upcoming wedding! Very exciting!

I've only heard great things about each of the programs. I've heard that the professors for both MSU and U of M rock. I just had a nursing professor for pathophysiology this past fall who is a MD and she was super awesome and inspiring, academically speaking.

Like you said, the good thing about U of M is that most of the hospitals are super close. Which is a really nice thing when factoring in driving in the dark winter mornings and gas prices. I haven't heard anything overly negative about either program, so if you do have to choose between the two it will be tough!

The only thing I can think of though for the difference in credits is if U of M assigns more credits to their clinical hours. Like say both schools have a peds portion, lecture and clinical. But State is counting the clinical portion as 4 and U of M is counting it as 6. If you do get into U of M's program, it would be an interesting question to call and ask someone in admissions!

One thing I do really think is a benefit of U of M over State though is starting in the fall. I don't remember your situation exactly, but I'm graduating in May and it will be nice to have a few months off in between (plus for U of M if I get in I have one more class to take; at State it's HDFS 145 Individual, Marriage, and the Family - but I'll just take it at LCC if I get in!)

Those are all good points. I suppose I will wait and see if I am admitted to UofM and then call and ask those questions...I just don't believe that taking 18 credits plus clinicals for 16 straight months can be healthy! But I see what you mean-MSU has assigned a course less credits than it could be worth before (ANTR350-it's 4 credit hours worth of work EASY but they decided to make it only 3 credits-which is unfortunate because it made it difficult to transfer the class from MSU to another college.)

Thanks :) I am excited about the wedding...it would be nice to get to go on a honeymoon and have a few months to just relax before school starts up again!

I am betting I had the same prof you had for NUR300 (she was an MD-thin, blondish hair-forgot her name though.) She was good and knew her stuff. My favorite class I've taken at MSU by far.

I'll let you know if I hear anything from UofM-I really hope they send us something before February!

Yes! Friedoff!! Also one of my favorite classes BY FAR at state. She was so amazing. Irritated me at times, but she knows her stuff. And yes I really want a (good) letter soon! Preferably before February!

I also applied to the second degree nursing program at Umich. I am anxiously awaiting and hoping you are right about hearing in February. When I went to the meeting they offered about application details Michelle said they would release decisions only in May. That is crazy long to wait considering I applied when the application came out, so hopefully it is earlier. Let me know if you guys get any updates, I will do the same!

May is way too long to wait in my opinion! Doesn't give us much time to decide between other programs or living arrangements. So if we really aren't finding out until may does that mean that they don't do rolling admission, even though their website says they do??

Yeah that's not rolling admission if they are only giving decisions in May! I also talked to Michele and Monica from msu to get an explanation for the large difference in credits and it turns out that they are actually very close. Msu doesn't count clinical hrs in their credits. Can't believe they take that long to release decisions. Oh yeah-Michele said they extended the app deadline to march 1 so I doubt we will hear in feb now.

And Michele assured me that uofm was trying to get decisions out ASAP because they know their students are anxious but she also mentioned early May to me last week.

I think releasing the decisions in May is really inconsiderate to everyone because we need to get our plans together and know what we are actually doing. If we apply to other schools and get in we basically have to forfeit a deposit if we end up getting into UofM later. It really is so frustrating...and weird because all the other schools within UofM have already started releasing their decisions. You would think the nursing program would, too. I applied in September so waiting until May is literally 9 months. Blah..so ridiculous

Yeah I'm in the same boat. I need to give msu a decision in mid march and I applied to uofm in October.

And doesn't MSU start in May? Also, weird that they don't include their clinical hour credits on the website. Good thing you found that out!

Yes MSU starts early May but seeing as how I am getting married then, will have to find a place to move to (and apartments fill up fast), and work-full time now I don't want to put in a 2 week notice for nothing or sign a lease and then have it be worthless if I really should be moving to AA. So it's not that simple and I'll probably end up just having to go to MSU even if I get into UofM if they don't let me know soon enough.

That is really frustrating, I can't imagine how stressful and crazy all that must feel. And this is why we need more than a few months of notice for acceptance!
