University of Maryland Traditional BSN Fall Program: Any idea when we will hear back?

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

I was wondering if there was anyone out there that applied last fall that could tell us when they learned the fate of their application? I was just wondering how long we (Fall 2009 applicants) would have to wait until we hear back from the admissions office. Thanks and good luck to everyone else!

Hey,

Wat ya get in the mail? I have seen anything yet...

Lab group assignments basically.

Thanks for the info dork. So im going to buy the older (once removed) version of all the texts if I can help it. Is there one that I should buy a new edition of? I mean I see that they require Mosby's drug reference 2010...but cmon really? I mean...i imagine 2009 will be just fine. I dont think there have been such draumatic leaps and bounds in pharma for it to be worth me getting the new one. But is there any particular class/book where I should deff get the most latest edition? Thanks.

Eml- for all of my applications (including all of my undergrad and graduate programs I've attended) I have written a personal statement that is very different. I wanted to make sure that after they read mine, they would remember me - that I wouldn't just be tossed in the pile of other "why I want to be a nurse" personal statements. Believe me, they have heard it all, whether it is through personal struggles, life long dreams, sick family/friends, etc. Not to belittle these things, but they are very common. Try to tell them something different about yourself that will add to the student community. Show them that you can write well. Show them that you're well rounded.

I really do think that this helps. Of course, make sure it is well written, proper grammar, and genuine. But make yourself POP. I have used this method and have gotten into numerous "reach" schools throughout my academic career, places where I maybe had a 5% chance of admission. G'luck.

eml- My gpa wasn't the highest when i applied. I'd say around 3.2. I think my healthcare experience and my personal statemant helped out alort. I'm a pharmacy technician and I currently work as a patient care technician. I think that experience is what did it for me. My personal statement wasn't the normal "why i want to get into UMB" type of essay. Try to set a atmosphere or situation that would make the readers interested and that would set you apart from other essays. I know easier said than done, but I'm sure your creative enough to do it.

But yea..if the grades arent all that, try getting healthcare experience, good recommendations, and a unique essay. But try as much as you can to keep the grades up. Good luck!!

I got mine today too!! These are a lot of books!! Hopefully the older editions are not too expensive..I'll probably start reading the chapters, so i won't be lost come first day of classes.

Thanks for the help guys! I have started to volunteer at Bethesda Naval Hospital and following around some nurse friends to get some ideas and have the ability to honestly say that I know that nursing will kick my butt ;) I am so excited about applying but totally nervous at the same time too. Good luck to all of you starting off come August! Thanks again!

Agrippa: Drug refs don't change much from year to year, like you said, its just more or less the publication company trying to make more money off the newer editions. I bought a PDA and got the drug ref softwares for those. They came in handy at times, but I can honestly say I still don't feel like my money has been well spent yet. Between pathopharm class and gaining experiance through clinicals and my externship, I notice that overtime you just get used to what the diff drugs are and what their uses are for. Hopefully I will get more use out of it as I banch off into the different specialty clinicals.

I noticed during book buy backs that some of the textbooks are being switched to new editions for you guys. I don't think any of them truly need to be new edition. For sure I can tell you that 333 and 304 class can be used editions. Pathopharm however is different. Dr. McClesky gives you a bunch of different pages to read for each section, not chapters... so if you are working on an old edition, you'd kinda have some trouble there.... at least that is how she did it last semester. She is in charge of pathopharm (315) classes for both campuses, so there's no getting pass her, in case you're wondering.

I found Potter and Perry (for lab) to be very useful, and I don't think you need the new edition for that either, used will be fine.

If I think of anything else I'll let ya'll know!

hey everyone! anybody else apply for the HRSA Nursing Scholarship Program?

Hi Eml,

I don't think gpa is as big as you might think...I think having professional work experience and volunteering on a couple of different nursing floors helped. I guess I agree Agrippa on making your essay unique. You might want to pick a theme and stick to it (aka-you want to be an OB nurse b/c....). PM me if you need add'l info.

Im in group 5 and no time conflicts so far. I was planning on getting books from half.com and amazon. Where do we get uniforms from?

Hi, angelp71,

First of all, congratulations!!! I am not sure if you are going to SG or Baltimore. But for SG, you may buy your uniform at any scrubs stores (Just make sure you have white top and Khaki pants) or you may get all the supplies at the orientation in August. You can easily buy school badge from Baltimore bookstore and iron it on your top. A lot of us, including me, have done so without any problems.

About the textbooks, I know some of us will be selling our books at the orientation. You may be able to get better deals.

Congratulations again and welcome to UMB nursing!!!
