I was wondering if there was anyone out there that applied last fall that could tell us when they learned the fate of their application? I was just wondering how long we (Fall 2009 applicants) would have to wait until we hear back from the admissions office. Thanks and good luck to everyone else!
Make sure you read JR's every word, he explained it in great detail, and it will help eliminate alot of problems later with your paperwork!! (believe me, it happens!!)
Also, there are A LOT of us selling textbooks that we just got done with too, so if you need anything, let me know. I am not selling all of mine (keeping it to study for NCLEX), but I do know a few that are, so if you are interested in saving money, let me know, and I will round up some used books from my classmates for you all, PM me about it if you are intrested! This will mainly apply to the new incoming Shady Grove students (sorry Baltimore students!), I can have it arranged that the books are available at orientation for you....
Enjoy your summer, get the partying and relaxing out of your system now, because the next of your two years is about to begin!! (and there won't be anytime to stop and breathe!!!!)
Angalp71, I am not sure if your question has been answered already. In order to register for classes, you need to download a registration from the UM nursing website, fill in the classes you want to register, and fax it to the office of registration . (http://nursing.umaryland.edu/resources/students/forms.htm)
BTW, I have the 2nd semester books like Gerontology, research and context I for sale. ( I am keeping the adult health for NCLEX.) If you want them, please PM me.
Good luck everyone!! You are about to start a wonderful journey as a nursing student of UMB!!!
I am almost positive that Baltimore and SG campuses conduct their clinicals in the same manner, so I will tell you how it works at SG campus.
You are assigned clinicals, it is not your choice for 1st semester students. You are to do a total of 24 hours of clinicals this semester, it can be in the form of 2-12hr shifts or 3-8hr shifts (again, not your choice, it is whatever you are given) Most likely it will be 3-8hr shifts though. Clinicals begin 3 months into the program. For example our semester started in January, and so clinicals began in March for half the group, and April for the other half of the group. So in your case it will be October for half and November for half.
If you have a conflicting schedule and you know well ahead of time, you can let the professor know and they will try to accomodate you. For example: I had surgery in March and so I asked to be put on the April schedule, and those that practice their religion on Saturdays were sure to not be put on the saturday clinical rotation.
Hope that helps, if it is any different, a current Baltimore student can correct me for that campus.
Ah yeah...first semester for Baltimore students is definitely different.
You're allowed to pick your clinical site but understand that there are certain days which only pertain to CNLs and others that the BSNs can have. Its also competetive meaning that at 6AM on the proposed date everyone and their brother is awake signing up for clinicals- they tell you to pick three choices ahead of time because of that.
Our clinicals were the last four weeks of class and eight hours per week. Now while that might change, I remember BSNs had choices on Thursday and Saturday. But being that they have to pick their clinical sites based on the number of students that sign up for class this could definitely change.
Also, if you're trying to find out clinical days to schedule around I'd advise against it. Whether you like it or not, most students seem to find themselves on campus plenty more than during class hours, and that includes on your "free days."
Also- welcome to the Baltimore campus Agrippa. I see so many Shady Grove students :chuckle
Hi everyone! I did get the registration figured out and have all 4 classes scheduled. There was only one section available for all so that made it very easy. I will be @ the Baltimore campus, and ill be there as much as it takes. I was wondering about clinicals...are they done as a group? The hospital i work in has a rotation of an entire class of students (15 or so) that come every tuesday and wednesday for about 6 weeks. I work in Psych, so maybe that is just the mental health rotation.
Im looking forward to everything!
double spaced..
Hey, for the incoming students,
Watcha doin??? lol..I'm excited to start, but then I'm not in a rush. I'm taking everybody's advice and enjoy my summer off before school starts. Im thinking about going to miami. BTW, can anyone reccommend a nice hotel to stay in Miami. Somewhere near the nightlife but also close to the beach as well..
Ok..back to the topic..I'm still trying to get a DR. to sign off my immunization form. Other than that, it's just book hunting, and I wanna redecorate my room. Changing my room around and buying new furniture helps me get in the mood to be serious and focused.
Hi Current students-thanks all for brining forth input on this forum it is extremely helpful and I think I can speak for many when I say that it is much appreciated. Can someone impact on whether it is possible to work part time-20 hrs a week-during the first semester at Shady Grove? It seems that the schedule would allow for it but would love feedback from someone who has done it or your thoughts on feasibility.
Many thanks!
GL
I will through in my two cents on this subject though I personally did not work.
When you first start into your first semester you will probably think you can swing it, but my experience is those that I know that worked ended up having to drop one of their classes or did not make the grades they wanted to make.
The schedule looks deceptively easy to manage but does not account for all the extra time you have to put in at school practicing skills. The volume of material is vast. Once its covered its assumed from here on out that you know it. The amount of time you have to put in to study is immense. One issue that I have seen is that those that work usually do not end up in study groups because of their limited schedules. Without the help and support of fellow students, you won't do well.
I am already realizing how much I have forgotten and will have to start refreshing my memory as well as starting to read ahead in the coming days (I am a 2nd semester junior).
Hope that helps and good luck!

and no they dont calculate gpa at orientation. If you are in, you are in unless you didnt make an A or B in those last prerequisite classes. I dont know what happens if you end up with a C or lower.
