University of Maryland Traditional BSN Fall Program: Any idea when we will hear back?

Published

I was wondering if there was anyone out there that applied last fall that could tell us when they learned the fate of their application? I was just wondering how long we (Fall 2009 applicants) would have to wait until we hear back from the admissions office. Thanks and good luck to everyone else!

Dont underestimate how much studying will be needed outside of the class.

Agreed! And don't base your opinions on how easy/manageable things appear to be in the first few weeks either. This first semester hasn't been hard in terms of difficulty of the material; it's the volume of the material. And for whatever reason, the tests in your 3 lecture classes will all fall on the same week pretty much throughout the semester. I have a classmate who at the beginning of the semester said she had a photgraphic memory and did not have to study much. I can tell you she has put in a lot of time studying after realizing there was more there than she could keep in that memory.

Plus there are all sorts of extras that you will come to or stay late for including validations & the extra lab time you will need to prepare for those. If you are lucky enough to get demos of skills by one of the TAs, those are always scheduled outside of class time and they are usually one-two hours long and crowded. With extra lab time, you have to figure out times you can go when there aren't a lot of people around all trying to practice the same skill which means the most convenient times will always be the most crowded.

I am not saying you can't work part time because I know some that do; just don't count on it all falling conveniently into place.

Im looking at the booklist - did you get any of the "recommended" things on the list? I for one have never gotten any recommended book as I have found that I will most likely never need them.

Also, did you get all your books from the bookstore or did you have finding better deals from a third party?

How did you get the booklist??

just go to the bookstore website and enter in your class.

Buy them off Amazon its cheaper...but...make sure you have the right edition and package. For Nursing 304 you will need My Nursing Lab to be packaged with the book. If you dont get it packaged together it will set you back $75 trying to get it later on. If looking at Amazon check the list price against what the bookstore is selling it for...if they are close that is likely to be the right one; if the list price is far off it probably doesn't have the extras that you will need.

Also dont be lured into buying books packaged with study guides - you won't have time to even look at em..trust me. For 333 though you will need the lab book associated with it.

Sorry about the recommended books...don't buy those right now. I ended up getting some of them after we started; but its best to figure out what you may need or what you can share or get at the library.

Just saw my financial aid package. All i got were subsidized/unsubsidized stafford loans which won't even cover half of the cost of attendance. Not looking good.

IMO, The my nursing lab cd is a waste of money.. the entire package with the textbook was almost close to $200? The disc itself is around 80..I didn't bother and I did fine in the class. The textbook itself was probably only $50. Not sure if everyone knows this... but if you go to the computers at the computer lab, there are videos on there. You have to look under start and I don't remember what folder but they're there. The skills are the same but may be a little dated than the videos found from my nursing lab. They still help and if you attend open lab, you should have no problem. There are actually times where I took my laptop and recorded some of the TAs demonstration, they saw and didn't say anything so I'm guessing it's okay to do so. Oh and the computer labs have the Saunder's 4th edition NCLEX questions program as well.

I always go to either half.com or amazon to buy my books. Most of the time amazon prices beat ebay so I always check there first. Also, I'm selling all my 2nd semester books minus adult health stuff. I usually put them on half.com but if any of you are interested then PM me, you save money for shipping and I don't have to go through the hassle of wrapping them.

I use My Nursing Lab all the time to study the text...the videos are a bonus. IMO it has helped. I would take my laptop to open lab and run the videos while I was practicing..but what helps me the most is the study guide part. Guess its all a matter of what you prefer. JR

I suppose you're right but I guess what I was trying to say is that if you're tight on cash it probably isn't necessary. There's also the study guide booklet that some people swear by which also has questions that coordinate with the text and possibly a cheaper alternative.

They also say that MyNursingLab is needed for the 2nd semester for your clinical simulation (you're in a room all by yourself and your SimMan deteriorates and you have to do all you can possibly do to save him...fun ohh fun) but that isn't all that true as well because you're focusing more on post assessment during that test period rather than knowing how to do the skill.

I found out about this website Chegg.com when I was searching for a way to save money on my Nutrition text. You go online and rent the books you need for the semester, and when the semester is done, you box them up and send them back using a pre-paid label you print from your account. I saved money, and I got to send back a book that I probably would not ever crack open again so that someone else could use it. Plus they plant a tree for every book you rent! :yeah:

I know it might be advisible to hang onto some selected books, but I plan on using them for most of my texts. The books also do not have to be perfect when they are returned, which is helpful when they get banged up in your backpack.
