Hi all soon to be fellow classmates! I just wanted to start this thread up so we didn't have to go weaving through all of the older stuff on the old threads.
I am really excited about starting school come January, really nervous though too. I have a lot to get done between now and then and sometimes I just don't think there is enough time in the day. Oh well, I plan on enjoying the holidays and working my buns off to save some money so that isn't an additional stressor during the first semester.
So lets post our questions, our thoughts and hopefully just get to know one another! And again....CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
oh...NOW I see the form. Great. It says if a students is misclassified UMB reserves the right to bill for out of state for that semester. Um, we'll see about that. That's absolutely ridiculous...I'm filling it out and rushing it down there at 8am tomorrow. Right when I think everything is organized and under control....haha, jeeze.
hi. does anyone know what kind of Kelly clamp (forceps) to buy? There's straight, curved, and different lengths?! And, for scrub tops and bottoms, it shouldn't matter what the style is, as long as it's the school colors, right? thanks for your help.
Don't be in any rush for the clamp. The penlight you will use the first semester. The scissors I used during clinicals in the second semester though there were scissors around everywhere at the hospital I was at. I haven't used the clamp once during the first two semesters. Only thing I would recommend is keeping it short enough so it doesn't constantly fall out of your pocket. For scrubs any style is ok but plain & simple (Cherokee) is best in case you have to buy replacements. I know for the bottoms they don't want an overabundance of pockets or "painter's" pants.
Sounds good. I just bought the smallest scrubs they offer that wouldn't be so loose on me (nothing fancy - pants had 3 pockets?). Thanks regarding the clamp. I'll get it once clinicals start. As for lab coats, I bought mine online, but as long it's plain and simple, I don't think they care if it's a different style than the one offered at bookstore (I've yet to make a trip into B-more, maybe Jan). Again, I bought the shortest lab coat offered online because I don't need to be seen shorter than appears.
If anyone needs their PPD tests done, I talked to Denise Mitchell at Student Health. She said they have walk-ins on Mon/Wed from 3-4 and Tu/Thur 1:30-2:30 (times may be off by 1/2 an hour because I was pumping gas at the time and trying to remember what she was telling me). I know they have a Friday hour but I was more interested in the Tu/Thur times. She says it's $12 (not sure if that means each time we visit or that's how much PPD shot costs) but that's pretty cheap for students. I'm so glad! :)
Thanks for the info guys regarding for the uniforms (I was finally able to check allheart's website as suggested by Blulilmunkie). I'll see if I can get the uniforms and lab coat here in LA..and will hold off buying Kelly clamp and scissors until later on.
Got my vaccinations done but does anyone know if the rest of the paperwork is to be submitted during orientation or should we mail it back already (ie, med history, drug test / background check, proof of flu shot, etc.). It says on the form that we have 8 weeks to submit the med history form to the health center and I suppose the rest will be mailed to the admissions office, right?? I'll need the 2nd dose of Hep B and I hope that I can get that done in the student health center before classes start.
Also, do you guys know how far of a walk Fayette apartment bldg is from SON? It'll cost me an arm and a leg but I have no time to look for a place before I move, so..Fayette it is. I just hope it is not too long of a walk (especially in winter brrrrrr weather).
Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays all!!!
3-6 pockets on scrub bottoms is ok - I think the point was not to have pockets all over the place. Students have worn full length and short labcoats so that should be ok as well.
As far as vaccinations go, mail it BUT ALWAYS make a copy before doing so, and put it somewhere where you won't forget just in case there's a last minute problem. For CPR cards make sure you copy the front and the back.
same here, mhinds12....i called on monday and a lady sent me the form....send me ur email nd i'l forward it to u....i faxed the completed form yesterday but it seems like the school is closed...i dont want to send in the unrefundable $400 if i would have to pay outta state....i dont have out ot state money!!!...well...dnt forget to send ur email addy ....

I know Fayette cost an arm and a leg but since it includes a gym, laundry, utilities, and POLICE with the building... you'll be happy.... i've talked to dental students who didn't start out there at first and regretted it and moved in.... walking to the SON is close...very easy.... see you in January!

I know it has happened to several people. Call the school ASAP as it can take them weeks to figure it out. Don't worry about it just make sure you keep on them to get it fixed
