Hi all soon to be fellow classmates! I just wanted to start this thread up so we didn't have to go weaving through all of the older stuff on the old threads.
I am really excited about starting school come January, really nervous though too. I have a lot to get done between now and then and sometimes I just don't think there is enough time in the day. Oh well, I plan on enjoying the holidays and working my buns off to save some money so that isn't an additional stressor during the first semester.
So lets post our questions, our thoughts and hopefully just get to know one another! And again....CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Everyone seems to be talking about only UMB...is there anyone goin to SG???...pls say yes!...i actually wanted to go to the b.more campus but got accepted in SG. how is it in SG?..SG is quite far from where i live nd i wld have to commute, hopefully when i make friends i could be a room mate to somebody who lives close to SG. school starts in a month and i have not gotten anything done...still waiting for my package. SOMEBODY PLS HELP! i need to get started. where are my fellow SHADY GROVERS?!
Ok, what do you mean you wanted to go to baltimore but got accepted into SG? Did you click, "no response" on the application when it asked where you will be taking your classes? I applied to Baltimore, but as I said earlier I missed the call Friday and therefore have no idea what campus I am "accepted" into. I never even considered this because I thought students were accepted/waitlisted/declined to the campus they applied to. Apparantly this isn't true? I really can't wait to call tomorrow and find out. JR Fraker said that they don't just put you at a school without talking to you...your post confused me.
I don't have much done either. Don't stress over it. Get your second Hep B this week and make sure you have CPR and you'll be well on your way. Good luck!
Hey mhinds12, i'm pretty sure i clicked on the baltimore campus, maybe the space that came up for me was in SG...call them tomorrow nd lets knw where u r headed. i already had most of my shots from high sch...i have 3 or 4 left with my tb test...i hope u get in the campus u want. I wish i got into B.more but its all good....and the cpr...i might have to do it in jan...hope our packages comes tomorrow so we are straight.
hurricane bells - this is a guess, but one reason 85% classified as commuters is that some people choose to live all over the city because UMB has little "on campus housing" - if you live 4 blocks from campus you are still technically a commuter...and then i agree with previous posts - it is all about the bonding with friends in school - but it seems you get that from your follow-up so i won't harp on it...just say i am getting the sense that we are about to bond through some serious suffering:eek:
umbismylife - i am bound for SG.
orientation: Wed/thursday Jan 20 and Jan 21 (9am-4pm i think - but i know the dates are correct)
i think uniforms, vaccinations, text books, and cpr were covered in previous/recent posts
registration: dont get too stressed - there aren't any "sections choices" at Shady grove and there is space for all. I don't doubt you may have a hold up with registering, so just do your part to stay active on it...between snow storm and holiday break coming (including some mandatory furlough days for state employees), i would guess that you may not be able to register til early january....but give it your best shot to get it done. there are a couple steps to the process - all limited by the baltimore campus receiving your $400 deposit in conjunction with your signed "intent to attend" - if you are overly anxiuos you could likely drive up and hand deliver on lombard street in baltimore (but call ahead to make sure they are open and willing to accept it that way). there are several followup stpes that are explained pretty well in the packet, but none of the steps can really be followed through on until UMB processes your deposit. if you want to see the times of your lecture sections (we are apparently assigned labs) check out this page we will be taking 304,315,320,333 (your packet may say 405 instead of 320...but we were told that was incorrect):

as cumbersome as it may seem, many of the questions that you may have will be answered here on the previous 13 pages of posts, including: what to rush and get done (vaccinations and CPR) and what may not have to be as rushed (books and "equipment")
to other posts: i'll be at the lax games as well - just a fan
someone out there mention PG county? headed to baltimore has MARC train options, headed to SG there is a FREE UM shuttle with WiFi that leaves from the student union in college park. not sure how reliable but i plan to chekc it out...may work well in mornings (6:30am is first departure and beats sitting in traffic), but doesn't run in late afternoons:sniff: and may have to suffer through long metro ride - but that can be time to study.
Congrats to those who were wait listed
I am still on the wait list as far as I can tell. Does anyone know if all the spots have been filled? I am still crossing my fingers that I get in.
Any idea what the cutoff date (if there is one) for wait list admissions?
I applied to the Baltimore campus
You can get accepted ANYTIME. Even IF the spots for denials are filled from the waitlist now, which is unlikely, there are still people that decide not to go for many different reasons. Family, job, money, failed to complete pre-requisites with a B or higher. immunizations etc. There are a number of different factors. Don't worry about it. Some have been accepted the day before classes in previous years. I know how you feel though. It's hard.
Worst case scenario if you are not able to get a spot for Spring, you will most likely if not definitely get a spot for Fall. Keep in mind you were not rejected, you were accepted pending space.
UMBismylfe--I did a follow up, I was accepted into the Baltimore campus.
Hang in there if you're still waiting though, it WILL work out.
For SG I think the bus is a great idea but just keep in mind on Mondays & Tuesdays you will have pathopharm from 500-730pm, so that may make for a very long day waiting for a bus especilly at night. You will have health assessment that starts sometime in the morning on Mondays, and somewhere between Mon and Tues you will have a 3 hour lab for health assessment. Wed & Thurs may be more feasible since those classes end sometime in the afternoon.
For BSNbear - its not that we bond through suffering, its that we bond through the amount of time we have to spend together practicing, writing and studying - all of this is beyond the time you spend in class and assigned lab together, so maybe "struggle" is a better word. I don't want to be all doom & gloom but there is a lot of work ahead of you. While your friends are out partying and you are stuck at home trying to memorize pathopharm meds, just remember when you graduate, you will have the potential to make a lot more money than they will. And trust me, you can make up for lost partying time well into your 30s if you want to go that route :-)

So I got my package today... I live in Maryland and it says for the purpose of tuition and fees, I have been classified as OUT OF STATE.
Has this happened to anyone else? Really hope they're goog about fixing this considering I've lived in MD since birth. I wonder why they mess that up or how....if you have a maryland address/SSN.

Hurricane Bells: If you think that you are going to end up miserable "hating life-part 2" at UMB because of the "community college experiance" then you should just call admissions and decline the admissions they have granted you. I believe you are going into this competitive and highly intensive nursing program with the wrong mindset. If your focus is anything other than receiving education and training from one of the TOP Nursing schools in the nation, then you probably will have a hard time dealing with the extra hours and sleepless nights needed to be dedicated to your studies to just pass the classes.
The BSN program at UMB is a 2 year, intensive program that will grant you life long friends. HOWEVER, age ranges from as young as 20 all the way to 50. So, according to your previous postings, the age range might be something you will struggle with. Those of us that have been there, done that before you, have learned to appreciate the vast range in age, experiance and wisdom.
Sure looks like you're starting off in the right direction............................................
