University of Maryland Spring 2010 Accepted Students

Published

Hi all soon to be fellow classmates! I just wanted to start this thread up so we didn't have to go weaving through all of the older stuff on the old threads.

I am really excited about starting school come January, really nervous though too. I have a lot to get done between now and then and sometimes I just don't think there is enough time in the day. Oh well, I plan on enjoying the holidays and working my buns off to save some money so that isn't an additional stressor during the first semester.

So lets post our questions, our thoughts and hopefully just get to know one another! And again....CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

I was just at Arundel yesterday. I guess I didn't pass by the Croc store (I'll have to go back or check Famous Footwear) but I went to SCRUBS & BEYOND.... For current students, is there other scrubs store in the area that sells smaller than XS?????? I'm petite and the scrubs were so huge on me. It's too loose even with clothes underneath, I'm so upset! Help.

Yup, its there. I remember it being on the left hand side on the corner end of a block.... The mall directory says Neighborhood 4, but I can't remember which major store its nearby to help you pinpoint exactly where it is. Also, Scrubs and Beyond gives 10% discounts to UMB students (at least they did a year ago, so be sure to ask!).

Thanks for the info JRFraker and Dorkalicious! I'm taking notes. I'm so happy in my decision to apply to UMB for it has students like yourselves, helping those starting out in the program. I'll sure do the same thing for the next batch. Nursing school can be daunting especially for someone like me who has never been to Baltimore, coming from the west coast, and diving back to school again. Pointers like what you guys share will help me not drown :imbar.

Question by the way, does anyone here know if there's an option to switch campuses (just in case) after the 1st semester should it become necessary? Please specify the color of the uniforms and how many would be good to have (I read in some postings that it is white top / khaki pants??) Does it matter where you buy it?

TY. (1 more final exam and I can start packing :yeah:)

Congrats again to those of you starting next month. Getting into the program is no easy task as most of you know by now :-)

......

Enjoy your 41 days you have left!

JR

P.S. I also have a favor to ask of everyone. Whenever you have time once school starts, check back here periodically and help out the people coming behind you. It gets harder to do so as you make your way through the program, plus it will be far "fresher" in your mind than it is in mine! Thanks ~

I found a couple different styles on allhearts. I guess it doesn't matter what style, as long as it's white top and khaki bottom. I would probably buy two of each, so you can switch off (we're only in clinic once a week for our 1st semester, that's what I heard). Have fun packing for those coming out of state! I can't imagine the excitement you guys feel about moving to a new place for school. The downfall of being local :( but it's okay, I'm excited to start school again!

You are welcome. I know without allnurses I would been completely crazed by the whole application process and the waiting and waiting and waiting.....It was good to know there were others that were going through the same thing I was as well as people who were in the program and were kind enough to answer questions.

Yes you can ask to switch campuses after the first semester. It is VERY limited though as Shady Grove accepts only a set number; the slots that will be open are because of people who didn't make it or decided not to continue on. And its those that decide not to continue on that can be problematic as they usually don't share their intents until the last minute. So if you do decide to try to switch be patient and flexible.

Uniforms: all white tops; all khaki bottoms. Tan will work as well. You can purchase them at a number of scrubs stores or uniform stores in the area or order them through the UMB bookstore (always more $$.). I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a white shirt since they are hard to keep clean though knock on wood mine are still stain free after a year. You can also buy scrubs off the internet which may be better for the person needing a specialty size. You can wear a white shirt underneath with short or long sleeves; guys also can wear regular undershirts. If you go the internet route, you should still have plenty of time, as you don't have to show up on January 25 in your uniform though you will need it soon thereafter.

For the holeless Crocs I bought mine on the internet. It was hard to find a real white pair (bone white looks gray to me though I am sure they would be ok.) I prefer a good pair of sneakers for a long day at clinicals but for school, I found the Crocs to be better.

There will be some weeks you will have to wear your uniform 3 times as you have to wear it to your 304 lab, for video validations, and to your clinical days. For 333 lab, we had the option of wearing the uniform or your lab coat. If you go the lab coat route, just be aware you can't wear shorts or jeans, so sometimes its easier to wear the uniform and change out of it if you don't want to wear it all day at school. I feel having two uniforms is better than trying to keep one clean and ready all the time.

My pleasure ;-) I had so much to respond to you, since I read this thread at a ridiculous hour in the morning while working a 12 hour overnighter shift at the hospital (not school related, btw). However, once I got home and to something more than my tiny iPhone screen for typing purposes, JR already beat me to it and thoroughly answered the questions you have asked!

Indeed, like JR mentioned, without allnurses, I would have went totally insane during the application process!

You are absolutely right about the relationships that are build through this adventure of nursing school! JR made a really good speech to the new juniors that had started in the fall at their orientation saying that they should take a good look around the room, because those were the people that they will be spending the next two years with, relying on one another for help, helping one another to succeed. He also went to mentioned (JR: hope you don't mind me paraphrasing everything you said!) that the competition is OVER, from this point forward, you will be helping one another to succeed, there is no longer need to try and out-do one another in grades or anything, its all about helping each other out and making sure nobody is left in the shadow feeling clueless about anything. Also, a little side note, there are SO MANY resources available that if you are failing, there is truly no excuse why you can't get help to bring your grade(s) up. But I'm sure that the folks reading this knows how to take full advantage of the resources and won't have issues with staying on track and passing your classes ;-)

Uniforms: Ditto to what JR said, but I'd like to add, please make sure the shirt you wear UNDER your scrub top (if you chose to do so) is PLAIN WHITE!!! Please don't challenge the authorities by wearing colored tops underneath, or even worst, white shirts with gigantic colored logo names on it!!!! I have a pet peeve about uniforms being worn correctly (thats the prior military in me) and it urks me to see people wear their uniforms in manners such as the above mentioned. I purchased myself 2 sets of uniforms, to eliminate the risk of having a spill on it on a Wednesday (hypothetically speaking) and then not having a clean one ready for Thursday morning!

Don't spend too much money on your scrubs because the novelty wears off it really soon!!!!! You don't want to feel like the one Grey's Anatomy top you bought that is triple the price of a just-as-great Cherokee top was a waste of money a few weeks in. Indeed they are nice, but save the money for the cute scrubs for when you nail your first job at the hospital, whether it is as a CNA while in school, or as a RN upon graduation :-)

I got in!!! I was waitlisted for two weeks.... ahhh I'm SOOO happy, can't wait to meet all of you very very soon! Does anyone know when we need CPR completed by? I'm signed up for the class on Jan 16th...only one I could get into :(. I only have basic so I needed to take the professional rescuer course. Hopefully that's not too late but I'm a little worried. If anyone knows...fill me in, thanks for your help!!

cpr rescuer cert. white shoes( my packet said leather or oxford) bandage cutters, kelly clamp, penlight. books.

umm hopefully im not missing much

thats a start...thanks for ur input!....did u register for classes yet?...when is SG orientation?

Congrats to the people who are no longer wait listed!

The CPR cert should be completed before school starts (25 January) simply because you won't have time once school starts. You will get a few weeks once school starts to get CPR and immunizations but it's a nightmare to get it done and recorded at B'More. The biggest thing is that you should definitely start your hep B before school starts or else you won't make the deadline for the second dose. And there is no fooling around with this; I know people who had to drop 304 because they didn't get these done in time.

SG orientation is Jan 20 and Jan 21. Don't know about Bmore.

Think the other questions got answered.

Congrats again - JR
