Hi all soon to be fellow classmates! I just wanted to start this thread up so we didn't have to go weaving through all of the older stuff on the old threads.
I am really excited about starting school come January, really nervous though too. I have a lot to get done between now and then and sometimes I just don't think there is enough time in the day. Oh well, I plan on enjoying the holidays and working my buns off to save some money so that isn't an additional stressor during the first semester.
So lets post our questions, our thoughts and hopefully just get to know one another! And again....CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Hey umb i missed the call yesterday so theoretically i could have been admitted to shady grove even though i live way closer to baltimore. I would not be going until fall if thats the case. Did everyone on the waitlist just get into shady grove or something or was it because of space? And i thought you had said you lived in pg county which is closer to shady grove. Ah i never even thought about it when i saw my status change so thats a let down. Does anyone know if we can find out online? Doesnt seem like it. Oh man another weekend to wait. I shouldnt have assumed i got the most convenient!
you would have to look up your class and find the crn. then go to the bookstore and plug it in. it will tell you what you need. download the schedule from umb site. shady grove is sg.
baltimore orientation is the 14th and 15th of january.
after you send in your email registration and the acceptance(?) for the position, a day or 2 after you should be ok to apply. they have to put you in the surfs system

Whatever school you applied for is the one you are accepted to. They won't put you at the other school without talking with you about it first.
is this true?:
an admissions rep. told me that 85% of the BSN class at Baltimore were commuters?! Is this true? So... I'm assuming not many nursing students live in Baltimore?... she said it with such confidence and authority that I didn't second guess her on the spot.... which was prob. a good thing since she wasn't in a great mood...
I'm kinda bummed about this since I was going to try my best to move down to Baltimore in the fall for 2nd semester... maybe I shouldn't bother?
mhinds12... you said you went to UMCP- lucky... you at least got the 'college experience'.... sounds like I'm ending up with the 'community college experience' for a year and a half and then 'commuter school'.... haha
If anyone who's a student and has opinions on 'social life' at UMB... please let me know... :redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe
I know a lot of the younger students who just came from undergrad were a bit worried about missing out on the "college experience".
For all of those that are concerned about this...the college experience is overrated. If by college experience you mean getting drunk, going to frat parties and doing the walk of shame...umm I guess you can do that by just going down the street to jhu or towson.
But if by college experience you mean meeting new people and making life long friendships/relationships, this is even better. In my first semester I've learned and been through so much more than 4 years of college at UMCP. UMCP isn't much of a "college town" anyway. In fact...its a joke.
If you really want to experience the "college experience" you need to go to a school like U of Florida, U of Wisconsin, Penn State, etc. But like I said...it gets really old. The wide variety of people with all kinds of experience that you will meet at UMB is much better.

ill be moving there too. My friend whos there said there is alot to do ( games, bars etc...) and we'll be close to the harbor. Youll see after the first semester what its like then, so you will have a while to decide:)

no no no... I didn't mean that type of college experience... what I meant was.... at my community college there are older students... which they're awesome.... but for instance, I didn't go to high school in Maryland... I went to HS in North Carolina... I was accepted to UMCP since I knew we were moving here.... but due to a smart choice my aunt talked me into going to the community college to save my parents money and my twin brother demanded to go to UMCP...he's had a ton of fun... but he's got loans out of the ears... I don't.... I've gone to halloween parties down at UMCP and other stuff like that.... but there is not a 'human interaction' at my community college--- a lot of people (even ones my age) seem to be so depressed that they're at a CC that they don't want to talk to anyone and they just want to 'get through it' and get on with their 'real college'....
I guess I was just scared I was going to comm. college mentality 'i hate my life b/c i'm here' part 2...
but thank you for the advice... it sounds like my fears were wrong....
so if anyone want to go to at least one UMCP Lax game with me this coming spring then I'll be happy.... just so I can say 'been there done that' :loveya:
The atmosphere at UMB is what I like most and is nothing like that of a CC. CC is interesting...it is a place where people can find new careers, learn new things or just stagnate. But yea, umb isnt anywhere as alienating as say a typical cc can be where most everyone is there just to get classes and move on.
If you make the effort, you can easily make friends with most everyone in the class. You just have to be open and friendly. You will get to know those in your lab group well - considering you will be examining each other - but also in a personal manner. There are also many school functions, free lunches, etc that will give you a chance to just hang out.
I'll go to a lax game with you! I just graduated in May and I still have so many friends living down there! Agrippa is right though, you aren't missing out.. I completely agree that the college experience is just about meeting good friends/people in general. UMCP is HUGE and I met tons of people, but to be honest how many of those people am I really going to keep in touch with other than my best friends? You're going to get a better experience at UMB and probably come out with some really close friends rather than just tons of random acquaintances as compared to UMCP.
Baltimore is going to be so much fun, so I hope you're excited--well, other than all the nights we'll all spend studying...but you know what I mean :) I'm sure we'll find some time to socialize so we don't go crazy. There's so much to do and you're going to meet all kinds of people. You were definitely wrong I must say!
See you in less than a month!
Everyone seems to be talking about only UMB...is there anyone goin to SG???...pls say yes!...i actually wanted to go to the b.more campus but got accepted in SG. how is it in SG?..SG is quite far from where i live nd i wld have to commute, hopefully when i make friends i could be a room mate to somebody who lives close to SG. school starts in a month and i have not gotten anything done...still waiting for my package.
