University of British Columbia (UBC) BSN September 2016 Applicants

Published

For all of us applying to UBC's BSN 2016 program, let's communicate, share and give encouragement to one another throughout the process.

I just submitted my general UBC application to get the ball rolling early, and it already gave me access to get started on my supplemental application. This is my second time applying, so I hope to do a better job on my app this year and at least get an interview. But I have also accepted that this may not be my fate and I have other options.

Incidentally, to others who also applied previously: I phoned to make sure all my transcripts were still on file, and they are not! UBC admissions discards everything from last year. So I have six transcripts to send in again (including high school). Expensive and time consuming, and also seems a little crazy in the age of computers that they didn't keep electronic copies. But, we do what we have to do... Good luck everyone!

so I just got an rejection letter.

I was ranked 3 (top 75 percent) on admissions average and 4 on supplemental application rank (lowest 25 percent).

The results were more harsh than I thought it would be and I am really sad :( but congrats to people who got invited to the interview. Hope you guys do fabulous.

I know how you feel. Last year I pulled my car over, read the email, and then sobbed uncontrollably. But, do not lose hope. There is always next year. Your grades from this semester may boost your GPA next year, as they only counted up to Dec in their calculation. As well, I scored the lowest on my supplemental last year, and got an interview this year, so my standing has clearly changed. You have worked incredibly hard and overcome some huge obstacles. Let that strength continue to carry you forward.

Congrats to everyone who got an interview invite yesterday, and my deepest admiration to everyone who had the courage and nerve to do what it takes to go through this crazy process, especially those who have done it more than once! It takes a tonne of guts to put yourself out there the way you have to in applying for the UBC Nursing program, we all come from different places, different backgrounds, and have probably all gone through our own version of multiple insanities to get to this point...the process and qualifiers are cryptic (after all of this, none of us know what got us in, or kept us out). To my new on-line friends who got rejection letters, dont give up on the dream of nursing...there are a lot of schools out there, a tonne of programs, and each will make you a great nurse. I got the same rejection letter last year, and it was an awful day...probably an awful week, but if you look over this forum and the previous years version of this forum, there are a lot of people who got accepted this year who were rejected last year. If UBC is your one and only...its work time...fine tune those grades, pump up that supplemental so that it makes the interviewers want to meet you. I completely failed on the supplemental last year and wrote it like a resume...very point form and cold, after getting a rejection letter I hunted down advisors from UBC, UBC nursing students/grads, and the best advice I was given was to write the supplemental so it read like a story of my life...what happened to me, how it changed my life, the lessons I have learned, and the positive action I have taken with the lessons, and how/why I would make a great nurse. I was really hoping for a windfall of great news yesterday (I'm sure all of us were)...I am still hopeful to meeting everyone face to face, either at UBC, or in the future as co-workers. We all deserve gold stars for this!;)

On a lighter note: Interview question tip #1 "why do you want to be a nurse?"...BAD ANSWER:"Pyjamas at work...whats not to love!"

Hi there! I don't know for sure what they're looking for but I think NERVOUS IN VAN gave really good advice, to write the supplemental like it's a story of your life. I think it's important to reflect who you are as a person in your supplemental application. I didn't really feel as though I had strong grades but I think I had a well written supplemental because I wrote it like a personal reflection. Hope that helps!

I am surprised at how quiet the thread has gotten, I guess everyone with an interview date is doing the same thing and prepping for the on-line interview...mines on the 14th, and I am starting to feel the new wave of stress...I have had a few friends who have graduated from the program drill me with random MMI questions, and have totally cleaned out and checked over my laptop, but am still nervous...for what its worth, I wish everyone the best of luck and hope to see you all soon.

It's finals week for students! :D Hey I think it's great you have friends who helps you with mmi questions! what a great resource :)

Yes, I am very fortunate to have the community I have...they've all invested a lot in me and I want to do them proud:)

I am super busy with finals right now, but anytime I think of my interview, a wave of nausea hits me. Any tips on how to do well in this interview? I am a pretty outgoing person, but I think a lot is at stake with this one 15 minute interview

Did everyone receive the email today regarding the interview & video on website...etc.? I did not receive mine, and I was wondering if everyone has received it? :(

Hi ChubbyHamster, I received my email yesterday at 4:30PM...hopefully yours will come some time today, if not, I would email Ruxandra.

Hi guys, I've been following this thread for a while now but haven't joined in the conversation until now! Just wondering how everyone's preparing for the interview now that its not in MMI format... I can't seem to make up my mind if this is a good thing or not since its only going to be 15 minutes long.

So far, I've been practicing typical job interview questions, putting them in relation to nursing (ex: 'Tell us about yourself', 'What are your strengths/weaknesses?', 'Why should we select you?', 'Why do you want to be a nurse?', 'What are your goals for the next 2/5/10 years?', etc.) and some of the ethics ones posted about earlier. I have no idea if I'm on the right track though, but that's what I've been doing! :)
